This was the exact example that came to mind for this thread. I was at Lexus when we handled these recalls. KDSS became standard on the 2010+ GX and combined with all the other "nanny systems" the vehicle actually remained TOO LEVEL in a skid, causing the skid to last longer than safely expected, increasing the likelihood of catching a curb and rolling over. This is actually a case in which the system worked too well.

A skid duration has nothing to do with the vehicle being level. It has everything to do with velocity and coefficient of friction of the tire and surface. Was this the official language from Lexus?

I realize I wasn't quite clear. What I meant, and bear with me as I might be a little fuzzy on this, was that because the vehicle remained level longer than anticipated due the addition of KDSS, it took longer for certain sensors, such as the yaw rate sensor, to trigger the VSC, or trigger the appropriate response from VSC, and mitigate the skid and causing the vehicle to remain in a skid longer and increase the chance of striking a stationary object, thus causing a rollover event.

Much better but probably it had nothing to do with skid duration and everything to do with communication between the yaw sensor and the VSC algorithm. KDSS was keeping the vehicle "level" longer and the yaw rate sensor did not get to a trip point to send the signal.

This brings up a good point: When you modify a suspension, this could screw up the sensors and timing too. Pretty sure if you have a modded suspension, get into this type of situation and roll it, you will have no recourse back to Toyota. This does not sound bad except if that roll ended in tragedy or loss of life. Then the person who wanted it lifted would be responsible. Most people don't think about this stuff. They only want it to look cool or clear that one inch higher rock.

The difference between the two 4runners in the videos is they changed the springs out. the early model 3rd gens had springs that would cause this.

also if there is a moose, just slow down. Swerving is the worst thing you could do, you will probably swerve into something else like a ditch or another car.

just drive gently on this truck, any truck with this height will have higher risk of roll over. It is not a sporty car you expect on handling..

Impressed how sturdy the roof seemed in that one. Now, be real here, they intentionally tried to flip these vehicles, and you can probably flip any vehicle you want if you do what they did in this vehicle. The key is knowing how to actually react if you lose control like that. I got T-boned in my 3rd gen by a suburban while I was at 40 mph and it spun me around and i felt the wheels try to leave the dry pavement, I was able to recover and keep all tires on the ground. Dry pavement probably makes it easier to flip.

Looking closer at the 5th Gen in the moose video looked like a Limited with XREAS suspension...

Now sure how many of you have driven a Limited with that but the body roll and other characteristics are very different than a "regular" 4Runner.

Its almost an unfair test against the jeep considering that system basically turns the 4Runner into a sports car, well at least as sports car as a body on frame SUV can get.
