4runner Trail vs Tacoma

I have a '10 T4R TE and I actually had a '08 Tacoma TRD OFF ROAD Double Cab, loved it - for me the bed space allowed me to do so many things. I loved the ride of the of the TRD OR. It was my dream car. But then I started having problems, not with the truck, but with lifestyle - I needed to do a lot of traveling/haul people and luggage securely. I have a photography business, so that means securely hauling expensive equipment, and when the TE came out I finally had a good alternative.

Looking back at it, the Tacoma was a better value I think, I got it for 25k new fully loaded - while the T4R TE was much more expensive. But I think I am spoiled now by the TE's features and gadgets - and probably wouldn't go back. I think the new Tacos have that Entune thing - I don't know its full capabilities.

It was hard letting go of the Tacoma, when I got married I took her away in the truck all decked out with lights - everyone said get a limo, but thats how much I loved it. But I also sold it for $24.2 k with 20,000 miles on it - so that helped ease the pain.

The TE is a good alternative to a truck like the Tacoma - I think like other people here expressed, it comes down to SUV vs pickup.

Sorry to say but I traded my 04 v8 Runner for a 2011 Taco this past weekend. I needed the bed for work on our small farm and for those trips to Home Depot when I would inevitable cuss a lot trying to get anything in the back of the 4Runner - fold down this, open that door, move that, oops I just scratched another bit of trim etc..

They're both great vehicles - I really like how the Taco drives in fact, which is good news since it's my DD ! I will miss the Runner but it was also getting time to say goodbye - I used to call it the Christmas truck - the past couple of years, each December or sometimes January as well it would come up with a little "gift" - last year was a CV joint, seized caliper and worn steering shaft part.

I know this is old but i enjoyed reading the discussion. I owned a 4 door tacoma and loved it. i sold it only to eliminate the car payment... i miss it.

My ideal setup would be a tacoma for myself and a 4runner for the wife. Having children and dogs almost requires the SUV for road trips. The tacoma with the bed is invaluable for hauling. Its annoying having to rent a trailer or figure out how to strap something to the roof rack rather than just throw it in the bed and be on your way.

Both are great vehicles but i preferred my tacoma because of its utility.

Your above quote sums it up for me as well. I live alone and didn't want the expense of a second vehicle getting used infrequently so I sold the '04, 4x4 Tacoma. But man , do I miss having that bed at times to just put a kayak in and go. With a lifted 4runner reaching that roof rack to strap down anything is a PITA. But while no vehicle is perfect in every situation, I'm glad I have the runner over the Tacoma and I just deal with the bedless-ness of it all. A big plus tho and a decent trade off is cargo in the runner is secured by the fact its locked up inside. I like that feeling, but reaching that roof rack......? I love my 4runner:reddance:

I have a 10' utility trailer with sides and a ramp on the back. Bought it used for 500.00. Best of both worlds.
