4runner TRD Pro

blacksheep4: I have not had a chance to watch the video yet. I will tonight :)

Wheel spin wasn't intended as technique. I think the guys did not realize they were stuck on driftwood. Neither did I - since there isn't a whole lot of driftwood on the South Padre Seashore to make one think about that. There was a language barrier, but I told the driver to go slow. He did go slow at first - but that did nothing (since he was high centred). Then he started going hard at it and did get some traction from Maxtraax, but not enough to get him off the driftwood but enough to wipe out the studs from the Maxtraax.

~

It's definitely worth a watch, these crazy Australians nearly lose both of their trucks to a rising tide but make it out using some questionable, frantic techniques.

Being high centered without realizing it is definitely a recipe for burning up your Maxtraax (after high centering myself, it will definitely be the first thing I check next time I'm stuck. Learned that the hard way once). Good on you for helping them out though!

Made a ~600 mile drive down to South Parde Island over the weekend with the family and had a grand time. Drove 30 miles (each way) on the South Padre Seashore. About 90% of the way was pretty flat and practically any car would be able to drive. 5% was tricky but any AWD would be able to manage and the other 5% was 4x4-only territory. Aired down to about 16 psi before heading out and did not feel even once that the vehicle was even mildly challenged. Piece of cake basically.

Two dudes in a Dodge truck were stuck so I decided to help them out, since I had my brand new pair of Maxtraax. At first I thought they were just stuck in the sand but actually they had got high centered on a medium sized branch of drift wood. Used the Maxtraax to no avail.

They asked me if I would tow them out so I towed the truck just enough to get off the branch and then Maxtraax did the rest. But one of the Maxtraax's studs are completely gone (most of them anyway) - did not expect that. I thought Maxtraax hold up better than that. I've got an almost flat Maxtraax (on the sides) now. Is this normal or should I contact Maxtraax?

looked at your second pic before reading where you went and I knew it was SPI. I miss that beach, seeing that i lived 20 minutes from there, but up here in the Seattle they dont have beaches like that.

Yes, I was very pleasantly surprised by the simplicity, beauty and accessibility of the SPI seashore. I have lived in Texas for 20 years and never visited SPI before - I feel like such an idiot. Its a down to earth place that I intend to visit frequently.

I can totally understand how you would miss this place.
Cheers!

I think the 4Runner will wear the color better. I LOVE the new Tacoma in this color in TRD Off Road trim.

^ Definitely glad I got an inferno. Really not feeling that sand color or the gray one.
I'd love to see one in that bright Taco blue though. I think that would look tits.

That doesn't seem right. Did you talk to Rocky Road?

So, I want the super sliders, has anyone else had to cut like this on their TRD Pro's to get them to fit? Can anyone upload the directions from RR? I want to keep my mud flaps (I like them) and don't want to cut anything, just want a straight bolt on.
Thanks

No cutting here, and i kept my mudflaps. Did have to remove a little plastic bracket looking thing. It's about 2" x 4". Two screws are holding it up. Not sure of its purpose or why it's even there but it was in the way. Other than that, everything else bolts right up.

I've emailed RR about my issues and have yet to hear back. I'll give them a call next week.
I'll see if I still have the instruction sheet in my garage and if I do I'll post it up.

Ah - thanks for pointing that out. That is clear.

I honestly thought these would last me a long time, so I am a bit disappointed in their durability, but it is what it is. I want to get a replacement but I don't think they even sell single units.

I am reluctant to order another pair but in all likelihood I'll get another pair since this stuff pays off when needed.

Just chiming in here, as I'm a lurker with a new '15 TE that I'm building up, and I happen to be the Marketing Manager for MAXTRAX

Unfortunately, we're pretty clear about not using wheel spin, and we don't cover that under warranty. I know that sucks to hear, but let me explain why.

The idea behind a MAXTRAX recovery is to properly position them under your tires, and then slowly let the vehicle drive out. Unfortunately when you're being a good samaritan and stopping to help someone out, they often times don't know that, or don't have the proper skillset to understand what's happening. (Like the French backpackers I just dug out of the Simpson Desert a month ago, which even after screaming at them, did not let off the gas)

They'll hold up to some serious abuse, but sitting on the skinny pedal with your tires spinning on them actually melts the engineering-grade nylon they're made from at the same time your tires start to melt — never will they break.

We tested hundreds of different nylon materials before choosing this one, why? Because it can be completely wrapped around a tire without breaking, and will bounce back without deformation. If the material was any harder, you would shred your tires, thus getting yourself stuck, and broken. To help visualise, the black crud on the MAXTRAX is actually a blend of the nylon and the rubber from your tire.

Recovery equipment has a lot of variables that all need to be accounted for carefully. I'm sorry we can't help, but the least I can do is reach out and explain a little bit as to why. If you have any more questions, please email me: [email protected]

(Admin: Sorry for jumping in here on behalf of MAXTRAX, I'm still waiting for that email back so I can advertise/sponsor on here. ;) )

That sand color reminds me if these yotas in the middle east. Not the look I'm going for!
