4runner TRD Pro

Another snide message from 1Engineer. Shocking. Dude, we get it. You're an engineer and you're smart. You were harsh on me with my braking concerns as well. Be a little kinder, man. Everyone is here for fun and for the exchange of advice. Guess what? I'm an engineer too AND I'm an attorney. But I'm not gonna make my handle "1Lawyer&Engineer" and be sarcastic with every single post. Just saying.

Land Rovers have 1year/15K mile scheduled maintenance intervals. Really loved that aspect of the LR ownership. On the other end of spectrum Infiniti's service interval is 3750 miles. Felt like almost every month I was at the dealership. Hated that.

I do think manufacturers recommend safe service intervals. They don't want liability and warranty claims. That factored in, I think they recommend shorter intervals than what is really necessary.

Obviously we all are free to follow whatever interval gives us the peace of mind.
Paying 50-100 bucks for that peace of mind is a rather small price.

Well counselor, then you should know if you put the "@" sign in front of my screen name then that will let me know you mentioned me. Common courtesy and all that. I have explained my screen name many times to people just like you. Those who have zero knowledge of me yet they think they can read 50 of my posts and have me figured out. I am no different here as I am in real life. There are too many "kinder" PC people in this world and too few of those who tell the truth regardless of popularity. How about you post something helpful next time instead of critiquing someone who could actually help you one day. As far as being sarcastic in every single post? C'mon man, you know that won't fly.

Now on to the subject of your ridicule. Unfortunately there is no "sarcasm" font. If there were I would use it often. Personally I don't care if they change their oil every mile they drive. I just don't care. What I DO care about is when people treat myths, legends and hyperbole like it was written in stone and brought down from the mount. Oil changes are like that. Everybody thinks they know better. I change mine at 10K because, get this, they know more about this design than me! Yep, they do.

Now, since we now know you are both a lawyer and an engineer then you could be of great help to this forum. Start by figuring out the whole Gobi versus Whitson patent lawsuit mess on racks. It's in the General forum.

Edit:
Harsh on you about your braking concerns? Here http://www.toyota-4runner.org/5th-gen-t4rs/160015-4runner-trd-pro-257.html#post2028066 Really? Dude you must be the most delicate flower in the world if you think my suggestions and explanation were harsh. Holy hell man...

Yesterday I had a couple dealers in my area tell me it's impossible to get one in Inferno anywhere... I don't think that's true. I hope not at least.

Not true - they probably are hard to find but there's an Inferno Pro on a lot in my area currently.

I wasn't questioning the braking system's utility. You drilled me about the utility and design. I was really annoyed at the hissing sound the brakes make when they're depressed (poor design). I just needed to know if that was normal or not. The truck was 1 day old when I discovered it. If I'm paying $43,000 for a truck, at least design something so i don't have to hear noise when i press the brakes down. To me that is stupid engineering. There's gotta be a way around that. Yes, i get it, the brakes are awesome. That doesn't mean the hissing sound is. Sounds like I'm stepping on a pissed off snake every time i push the brake pedal down.

Sorry about the "@" SNAFU. Wasn't aware that by virtue of the fact that I'm an attorney that that was something i should know is functional on these boards. I know now. So, thanks 1engineer.

As for the patent suit, I wasn't aware there was a law suit going on. That's pretty interesting. Although i noticed that on every GOBI STEALTH rack, they have a "patent pending" stamp on it. Really want to order one. Trying to figure out what light bar to get on top. Curious to see who designed what and what (if anything) about the design is proprietary.

sincerely,

delicate flower, esq.

not looking for a pissing match here and sorry to interject but didn't you test drive and hear the snake hiss from your brake pedal before you bought your "pro"? that could have swayed you toward a non-hissing braking vehicle. Too many people complaining about petty $hit on this board but then again, opinions are like a$$holes....

LOL

Hey Northern, i was JUST thinking about this. I'm at 4,700 miles now so I'm due for my 5,000 service soon.

I was going to ask that they do an oil change at this point and then another at 10,000 and then just go every 10,000 mi from there. Thats what the recommendation is, right? every 10,000?

I just feel like since the truck is brand new, maybe its a good idea to change the oil at $5,000.

I'm still pretty pissed off about how fragile the white paint seems to be (although thats a totally different subject). I really considered getting the entire car wrapped in matte white, but i feel like thats not a permanent solution and wraps don't last forever. For the price its prob not worth it. This just seems like something I'm gonna have to suck up and deal with.

There's also this ceramic coating you can get done on vehicles, but thats also a few grand. Not sure what other SUPER WHITE owners are considering (or if it even bothers them at all).

Anyway, thats my 2 cents about the 5k service

Yep , every 10k for oil & filter and so on .

I'm gonna detail it tomorrow , I'll let you know my opinion of the Super White after . She is naked right now , she got waxed @ 100 miles before my trip to Canada.

I'm not really sure what's so complicated about understanding how a design defect can be an annoying nuisance. This isn't 'petty $hit'. And no, I didn't hear it while test driving it. If I had heard it, I would have asked the salesman about it and then he would have told me it's totally normal and then I wouldn't have asked about it here, and then I wouldn't be getting an earful from you and mr engineer.

Your complaint is petty shit, the squish is not a defect, if you understood why it does that, maybe it would change your mind...maybe... Your brakes work fine, don't they? If you stopped listening to the salesman while test driving, you could have heard (actually felt) the squish but you were probably too amazed at what the salesman was feeding you. Get over it, you have a great truck. Have fun with it.

It may not be a defect but its no pinnacle of engineering either and it is definitely annoying. 4Runner is the only vehicle I've owned that makes this squishy sound. I takes some getting used to.

As an owner derinsr5 is simply expressing his opinion. He is not making stuff up, he is stating a fact. His comment/post might even bring it to a prospective buyer's attention. He also has the right to complain, just as you have the right to be content.

No. He's not. Several times he has said it is a defect, a bad or inferior design and many other statements that he, nor I or anyone else are qualified to make. If he said he hates the sound or something and left it at that it would be fine and opinion and no problem. I even said the sound was annoying when I first got my old 4Runner But I did not judge the design because hey, I don't know how to design it better. That's my problem with his comments. He can attack me or my comments all he wants and I don't mind. He is just venting and not used to truth. But to determine it is a bad design when they are not even remotely qualified to do so is ignorant and shows how little they actually know about designing something.

This is EXACTLY my point. Eagle62, for your own edification, I first test drove the TRDPRO in December of 2014. It was not the right time to buy, because I was absolutely determined to drive my 2000 SR5 into the ground.

Once my 3rd Gen's frame almost completely rotted out (same reason they recalled the Tacomas) it was time to say goodbye.

So no, i wasn't just "listening to what the salesman" while driving. I took it for a joyride with no intent of buying at the time and I certainly wasn't looking to dissect the vehicle at the time.

May 2015 rolled around and I was informed by my local dealership that they were getting one SUPER WHITE in and it had yet to be claimed. I put down my deposit sight unseen, waited a month or so for it to come in and the first time I drove my vehicle was when I took it off the lot.

I was well aware of what the TRD PRO was all about, and the last thing I expected was to get annoyed by a stupid brake noise. But I've gotten used to it.
jamgolf is 100% correct. This is the only vehicle I've ever driven that does this. Porsche, Audi, Land Rover, BMW, JEEP, LEXUS, FERRARI are all vehicles owned in my family. Not a single one of these vehicles makes this noise.
1engineer, so you know what that means? There's a way to do things, and there's a way to do things right. There's no way you can convince me that there was not any sort of way to mitigate/muffle this noise to make it completely inaudible. Just because I don't know the answer to correct this doesn't mean that there isn't an answer.

I absolutely love my TRD PRO but if i could change 2 things about it it would be the quality of the paint job and this brake noise. And I'm entitled to opine in that manner. I didn't buy a 1994 ford taurus. I bought a 2015 Toyota 4runner TRD PRO. I expect more from a company that I've stuck with since my college days.

Wanna know what else is annoying? The fact that Toyota didn't run their calcs correctly to account for the NITTO TERRAGRAPPLER. What they should have done was create a different bumper mold just for the TRD PRO. Instead, they stopped production to figure out what to do with the bumper, and their solution was to manually shear the bumper to get the front tires to fit properly. That's sloppy work. ie- lazy and shitty engineering. Thats why everyone who owns a TRD PRO can see how they cut the inside of the bumpers to fit the tires.

I will qualify my statement by saying I really do like my TRD Pro -- the looks (grill), wheels/tires and suspension are great, love the truck. But I get where you're coming from the sentiment of it anyway. Toyota were just a tad lazy with it. It's essentially an stock 4Runner with a different grill, wheels, tires and suspension. They did a good job but there could have been more a bit more thought put into making it even more original -- like the bumper. Would have loved something upgraded engine-wise, I mean, it is a TRD (Toyota Racing Division?) Pro for f-sake. I different/proper roof rack would have been nice too and rock slider style side steps instead of the terrible plastic running boards (that I immediately took off),...come on man. The brakes,...yeah,...I had a 5th gen LE that a traded for the Pro and the squish bothered me at first but I don't even think about it now.

You need to understand something: TRD is not Toyota proper. They are a part of Toyota but their engineering is totally separate. They work in conjunction with the Toyota engineers but they have their own guys do the work. The suspension was done by TRD engineers, not Toyota (the guys who designed the rest of the truck) engineers. There is a big difference. That's why there is a problem with tire interference on some of the TRD Pros. They didn't allow for the different alignment, specifically caster, settings that could come from the factory. Also that's why the work was done at the port instead of the plant in Japan. The grille and appearance bits were done at the factory. The suspension (and the "clunk" when it gets cold and the rubbing which meant the cover needed trimming) was designed by TRD and installed at the port. There is a BIG difference between TRD engineers and the Toyota engineers.

Have you ever heard of a non TRD PRO 4Runner that needed the front cover trimmed? Or a clunk coming from a suspension of a non TRD 4Runner? That's the TRD guys, not Toyota engineers. If you blame someone then at least blame the right guys. And it's not the tire fault either. It's the wheel and suspension fault.

TRD PRO = window dressing

SQUISH = Get a Life

The squish bothered me once or twice...until some jackass dropped a 2x4 out of their pickup truck doing 65 and I had to stop all 3 tons of my 4Runner in the span of 100ft or less. Frankly it brakes better than my old Golf. People *****ing about that sound should go pound sand.
