4runner TRD Pro

Also, visually lift not that much different, but it must be there to some degree as my kids have a harder time getting in this vs. my Limited.

uhm... I'm sorry, am i the only one that didn't buy the TRD pro for the "lift" around here?

if i cared that much about a 1" lift, i would just bought an SR5 and lifted myself with 1-3" adjustable aftermarket coilovers and still probably paid less.

i bought it because i paid the same as a trail edition out the door and got a truck that i liked the way it looked MUCH better off the showroom floor than any other version of it AND probably will have a tad better resale in the long run than any other version of the 4runner simply because of the "special edition" BS attached to it to boot.

i didn't buy with the illusion that i was getting some "special" suspension...if anyone that bought it for that reason thought that i have a bridge to sell you.

and maybe I'm also in the lonely club of hating sunroofs? I've never open the sunroof on any car that had it. all my trucks had full length racks, the sunroof became a window into a rack.
KDDS? ... not sure how much you guys off road your trucks, but one thing you learn REAL fast is that all that type of technology is exactly what will bite you in the ass when you're out 100miles off the nearest paved road. Heigh adjustable suspesions, electronic disconnect sway vars, kinetic sway bars like Land rover tried one time and now Toyota.. all those gismos brake and you end up to limping back on to a paved road.
Just ask those that had KDDS on the first lexus or toyotas that offered them what they paid to get them replaced when the finally shit to bed.... pass.

i was going to order a Trail Edition without sunroof, KDDS or that stupid sliding cargo tray... then the TRD Pro came out and i had my truck.

I wouldn't worry about all the negativity focused on the TRDP. If you notice it's mostly from non-TRDP owners trying to justify to themselves why they didn't get one. I also paid less than MSRP and not much more than a TE. I test drove the SR5 and liked the TRDP setup/ride much better. If you are looking for something that you don't have to start modding and kill your warranty the TRDP is an excellent choice. And yes, I agree that the TRDP looks much better.

We are talking about those poor souls who thought they were getting the front end height Toyota claimed...... .5" and a few suspension mods doesn't justify me paying 39-40k instead of my SR5's 34k price tag....especially since I do zero off roading. The 5k in my pocket sure feels good. Now....if I was an off road enthusiast then the TRD makes sense. If you read my earlier posts I praise the TRD for its looks, but its unfair that Toyota lied to people about the height.

if you're doing zero off roading then i don't see how you have a horse in this race.

the suspension set up (lift or no lift), wheels and tires, and if you care, the general looks on the TRD, is more what attracted some over a limited or an SR5. i don't think anyone was thinking the lift was the "thing" about a TRD pro, i hope. anyone with a calculator could figure out $40 on eBay could get you a bigger lift. if they did then they made a bad decision for sure.
the only real argument here would be between the trail an the TRD pro...and if you actually off road you figure out which fits you better right after a test drive and looking at the equipment choices. i was all about he Trail but i was going to strip all the add ons and put better suspension...basically a TRD pro . other guys are looking at the flexibility of slow speed crawling while still having a good feeling on road drive, the trail.

Well said

Hi Ya'll - pending TRDP owner. Anyone consider resale value as compared to the 4RTEP or other 4R's?

Also, does anyone believe this is a "limited" production model. Dealerships keep selling that this will be the "only" year offered. Any general thoughts on that?

Cheers

Question:

How does the TRDP compare to a Trail equipped with KDSS for daily driving? Is there a significant difference with body roll reduction?

Thanks!

I second this….Man there is a lot of negativity on here towards the Pro. If you don’t like it; don’t buy it. Stop trying to tell me or others the justification on why we ‘lost out’ or ‘were lied to’ by Toyota due to the Prototype looking different and having different features then the Production Model…Ummmm that’s why they call it a PROTOTYPE you genius (even this Grunt figured that one out pretty f’ing quick). Also, if you look at the prices of T4R’s they run anywhere from $37K up to $48K and the Pro runs right there in the middle at $42K MSRP. If you can’t negotiate w/the Dealer on the price, then you have no business buying a new car in the first place (I feel bad for you, and you should give up your man-card). I walked out with mine at MSRP including all the goodies+ no trade and $12K cash, with a Platinum Warranty, 10 yr/100K Service Agreement, Tire/Wheel/Glass/Interior/Carpet/Paint Protection-Warranty ($50 Deductible). Same as my FJ (when I bought it in ’08 and still going strong at 59K miles) and I use the hell out that Warranty and Service Package.

Lastly; if I decide to start modding my Pro, as long as I’m within the Magnuson Moss Warranty Act boundaries then the Dealer will have to honor the Warranty and Service Agreement. I went through this with my ’08 FJ and won every single battle when they tried to deny service on CV’s, 3rd Member Seals, Transfer Case, Pulleys, Drive-Shaft and doors (I have 4” of lift on adjustable ICON Stage 6.)

Stop hating, just ‘cause we have better looking T4R’s than you now…Go back to the kitchen and put on your apron….your biscuits are a burnin.:whip:

Pictures don't lie if you look above. You'll see what I mean. Toyota flat out lied to TRD people who pre-ordered. Not cool. Your correct I don't do any off roading, but then again that's not even the point here.

Not sure where you live, but here in the Midwest there has been no dealer who sold one under msrp. That's a fact.

As far as my man card....well....my wife can vouch for that lol.

Look no hating is going on. Toyota made a huge error and people fell for it is all. Life goes on. As a matter of fact many people are saying the TRD is the ugliest model. I disagree though.

like i said, you're focusing on a lift. if you're the kind of guy that actually off roads, that lift meant nothing from the day they announced this. 1" is not "a lift", by any stretch. its the difference between two tire sizes in most cases....heck, its the difference in tire pressure sometimes. I get it, "hey my SR5 is as lifted as your overpriced TRD pro" sure...you win that argument, for those that actually think a 1" lift is a thing.. but not the "which truck is more off road ready" thats the point of this truck and that trail and where the TRD and the SR5 don't compare.

one easy way to test this is taking the sr5 and the TRD on a 10 mile washboard and mule road in utah and see how they fair. thats the basic premise of the TRD trucks and also the trail.. one is focused on slow speed off roading and the other on maybe higher speed desert roads and overloading if you will. the sr5 is a base truck designed let you go which ever way you prefer with mods or leave it alone and be a good city and snow SUV.
as far as the sr. limited trail or trade pro "lift" it doesn't change any of why people choose on over the other., i really hope so anyway. Pretty sure this is why toyota saw no issue with lowering the front end .5' by the release date, I'm guessing done after some lawyer put the fear in them about airbag deployment or something stupid.

Actually, it was discovered that the prototype shocks ended up being different from the ones that eventually made it onto the TRD Pro and only have 2 notches. They cannot be raised to the same height as the prototype models. Pretty much everyone paid a buttload for a model that is only 0.5-1" taller in the front than a stock TE.

where and by whom was this confirmed? you very well may be correct, but everything i've read on here seemed to indicate that the TRDP coilovers were adjustable and can be raised to higher adjustments (notches).

the part in bold is just dumb. if the one and only reason you bought a TRDP was based on lift, yr a fool to begin with.

pretty much wrong about that....
i paid 2K UNDER msrp and it didn't take much more than an email asking what their best price on it was...phew!! I'm a hell of a negotiator!

and if anyone was buying this truck BECAUSE of a 1" lift...wow. How about i show you the link to Ebay full of 1-2" spacers for $30?
I bought it because it was the perfect bare bone factory off road focused 4runner that i was looking for in the trail edition minus all unnecessary add ons (kidds etc) and i got factory warranty remote reservoir coil over suspension... if you ever off road a lot and don't want mod your truck right out of the warranty this is GOLD.

Let me update you on the above statement. I'm in Minnesota and I am getting mine for well under MSRP.

Agreed. I could honestly care less what suspension the TRD Pro comes with, it is going to get ripped out and something else much nicer put in. I am buying for the color, the special edition, all the off-road goodies (locker, ATRAC, crawl, etc) and the re-sale value which while hasn't been confirmed in any manner that it is going to be any better, I am betting on it. If it wasn't for the TRDP I would be getting a TE without KDSS.

I would not say that Toyota lied. They very clearly indicated everywhere that it was a prototype with optional equipment and the production model may differ. This was on the Toyota website, in many of the commercials, in the handout that the dealerships had, and at the auto shows. At the FJ Cruiser Summit in Ouray CO, TRD/Toyota had 3 TRDP 4Runners there and 1 of them was set up with the exact height that we are seeing in the production models. They were very clear at this event that they other two were prototypes and sat much higher than we would see in the production models. I would strongly disagree with the statement that Toyota lied to anyone.

You guys...
Just remember everyone who buys a 4Runner and posts here thinks that what they bought is the best. Let me repeat that: Everyone who buys a 4Runner and posts here thinks that what they bought is the best.

The TEP crowd, the LE crowd and your TRDP crowd. Us SR5P guys do too.
Why? Who knows. You guys have a TE with a a different suspension, wheels and a different front end. Guess what - The LE guys have that too with a different drivetrain!
The truth is none are better or worse than the other and looks are subjective as nobody will ever agree on the the looks.

Enjoy the TRDPro because I am really liking my SR5P (after having a TEP) and I'm sure the LE guys love theirs too. Anybody who knows anything about off road knows that the driver is what matters the most. We could take the baddest, most capable 4Runner that's been modded here and a pro driver in a stock Subaru Outback would clean our clocks in all conditions. I have always said skids are for people who can't pick the correct line...

100% agree. I've been arguing more the point of how every truck is different and why one guys chooses one over the other...instead of dumping on this or that truck as stupid as so many seem to be doing with the TRD. i remember reading a bit of the same about the Baja tacoma when that came out...every guy with the TRD off road package ( which i owned) starting bashing the the Baja...and that had a legit 2" lift! why? be happy for the guy getting the truck they wanted. if i wanted a LE i would go get that one and be happy with it, just didn't serve my goals as well, thats all.

I am sure people are happy with the model they purchased, as I am with mine. What I don't get is why they have to come in threads like these and tell us why our model sucks.

Because people suck plain and simple.

I was going to "like" your post but I just remembered that I suck so I take back my "like" of your post.

Have you heard of the comedian Bill Hicks? He had a bit where he talked about starting a "people who hate people club". Nobody joined because they realized that other people were going to be there.
"I'm starting a people who hate people club"
"Great idea! When is the first meeting?"
"Saturday at 7"
"Great, are you going to be there?"
"Yes"
"Well then I'm not going"
"F U then"
"F U too!"
