I remember being on the trail and someone asked our spotter.... "does she have a locker? I'm not sure she'll make it up this"
Nope, no locker. Made it out and up just fine with A-Trac and stock dunlop tires. The boys showed up with lifts, lockers, tires and all sorts of stuff. Didn't NEED any of it. Might mention I followed a TE all weekend.
Those things are nice to have, but not absolutely necessary..... Have I since added some goodies to my truck, yes, but it's nice to know I didn't NEED them.

Dipped Chrome & question about Gobi Stealth wiring
Here's the dip job I did on the rear.
Used off the shelf gray and dark gray metalizer to darken the tone of the gray. Without it it looks too much like primer.
Gobi wants 250 dollars to prewire the rack for my light bars. I'm not gonna pay that amount of money. If I don't go that route, is it still possible to run the wiring through the inside of the piping without drilling? Are there pre-drilled holes?
Are the aftermarket gas struts necessary with the ladder?

I agree they're perfectly capable off road stock, I was just wondering. I haven't had a chance to drive an SR5 and couldn't find where it would list whether they had those or not on the Toyota website. I knew the Trail did, just wasn't sure about the SR5.

No locker or terrain select.. at least on the older 5th gens. We have the downhill assist and A-Trac.
I've needed all of it and more. Gotten mine stuck quite a few times, ripped off a mud guard and had to have it re-aligned twice so far from jumping it.
I'd like to see the difference in the terrain select vs not having it as it essentially works like a part time locker. I've actually smelled the brakes for many minutes after using it hill climbing. You can hear it modulating the front brakes.
That being said my sis's SR5 seemed to do decent with enough momentum....but so do most 4wds

there are plenty of scenarios that are totally impossible without the use of locked differentials and mud terrain tires. if you haven't gotten to that point, you haven't wheeled hard enough yet
pictured: my truck and my 6' tall buddy Adam for scale. i wouldn't have been able to back out of this scenario without a rear locker, a front one would have helped me not getting in this one, and some common sense

Are the stock tires on the trd pro any good in the snow? It says A/T but i hear they $uck in the snow. I should have my '16 t4r tdr pro in 6 to 8 weeks...cant wait. First thing im going to go is replace the rear chrome emblem, i need it blacked out being that the truck is going to be black, and please dont say they dont make black, my '16 will be black. I'd like to get some bright lights in the back and on the roof in the front. Never owned a toyota or truck, going from a small german sports car to this huge monster. Who has good aftermarket parts for the trd pro? Front bumper/lights/smoked out emblems/etc...

From my experience this past year the Nitto Terra Grapplers worked extremely well for me.
I drove 15 miles offroad through 8" of snow covered mountain trails at 25 degrees Fahrenheit. There was a 2 inch layer of crusted ice sandwiched in the 8" of snow and over frozen ponds, puddles and streams underneath. I did not run into any trouble at all with the Terra Grapplers.
When I did get slippage sideways it was due to the fact that the two trees I was trying to squeeze between forced the tilted approach angle. Instead of sliding my (then 2 month old) T4R into one of the trees, I backed out and went on through a spot where I was heading straight up the hill.
We also had several snow falls around here this past winter that were over 4" (laughably considered big snowfalls here in the Balt/DC Metro area). Again no trouble at all with the Terra Grapplers.
Another 20 mile offroad trip through dirt, mud, water-crossing, puddles and streams also never let me down or stuck.
Hope this information gives you more confidence on the tires and congratulations on your expectant new rig! Enjoy it, these 4Runners are great fun!

Yes I do. Not listed yet because my bumper isn't even shipped yet, but I do plan on listing in classifieds soon. Will be selling the lower black piece, TOYOTA piece and upper grill mesh. Just going to build a satoshi to replace it all after the bumper is installed.

My experience with these tires this past winter was nothing short of fantastic. This past winter was pretty real for the lower 48 and this truck and these tires just laughed at everything Mother Nature threw.
That said, after 16k miles on the truck I am down to 5/32nds on one tire and 6 on another. I'm going to change sizes and go with separate setups for summer and winter. My winter setup will obviously be with dedicated snow tires, but I digress. These tires DID kick much @$$ in thanks snow and ice this past winter.

Thanks man, im downstate in the tri-state area, the roads here are war zones. Good to hear i dont need a set of winter tires. I was going to get a Rubicon, but i think this was the better choice.
