4Runner Veterans advice

Hi all..And thanks to all that have been helping with my inquireis :hatsoff:

So this is what I think im going to go with..2014 TE prem with KDSS..

as some of my posts stated I wont be doing offroading (NYC jungle only) and I do love a solid non floaty truck.

So after speaking and reciving their help at Toy Tec I will install the ----TAFCS-6005 ToyTec Coil Overs and have it set to just 1" lift so it will basicly just even out the front rake...I think...I hope lol..But also give me solid springs and of course solid Bilseins to help tighten things up front (nose dive)

20" wheels with 285/50 r20 tires...

I think after those two mods on a TE KDSS ill be having my self a nice ride..

ok what do you guys think of that set up..
even my tire size ..let me know if im doing something wrong

You probably are going to have tire rub. Click on the tire link in my signature to check. Depending on your new wheel's offset it could be minor or major. Offset and backspace info for TE is in the notes section of the chart also. Hope this helps.

Oh ok great..I will investigate that..may have to do 275/55 r20 possibly ..im good with that also

I think the custom wheel I was looking at compensates with the offset though...ill have to check

I think putting 20" wheels on a TE is stupid. Yes, I know, urban jungle, blah blah blah... The 20" whees will be more problematic (more prone to flats from banging pot holes), more expensive and reduce your tire choices. I understand wanting custom wheels, but no way I would be putting 20's on a TE. You want the smallest rim size you can get and clear your brakes - 17".

Suspension - I think your front end is going to feel noticeably tighter than the back and may be source of aggravation. The least I would recommend is adding Bilstein 5100 shocks to the rear (with no lift) in addition to the Toytec coilovers.

No offense intended, honest opinions given...

Regardless of my opinion, customize the way you want and enjoy.

I hear what your saying about the wheels. And will deff consider it.

My fault on the shocks...yes I will be adding the 5100 bilsteins to the rear also..i didn't mention it I see.

well i think if your hitting potholes at excessive speed causing flats, it wont matter if your running 20's or 17's. 2in of sidewall between a 17 and a 20 is not going to be much protection above safe trail speeds.

i would say go for it. if you like the look of the 20's on the TE and dont ever intend to leave the city have at it. its yours, do with it what you want regardless of what others opinion are on looks.

Often times times you have little to no control how fast you hit a pothole/road debris in an urban environment. Thicker sidewalls offer significant protection against flats, they also offer better ride. 17" tires are significantly cheaper and come in a much better selection. The 20" rims on the LE are an abomination. A nod to bling and form over function. My opinion has nothing to do with looks, everything to do w/ function.

20's on a 4R is no different than 13's on a Monte Carlo -- it's all about style. You can argue sidewall, clearance, footprint, ad nauseum - but that's all just superfluous.

It's not my style, I do not care for skinny wheels/tires on hunky vehicles, but it's your ride, and it should be your style.

It's funny, I'd pay money to put 17's on an LE, while others pay money to put 20's on a TE. Life is good.

Let a guy pimp already. 20s will be fine and eat all those potholes. Just make sure you don't get e rated tires. Are you in Manhattan proper or a borough? Parking on the street or in a garage? Maybe the height will help with the inevitable bumper rash that comes with NYC parking.

Im in a Borough but work and commute every day to Manhattan. The wheels arent the biggest issue for me..I can easily do 18" with 275 and be fine :")

My most important Mod will be the coilovers up front and 5100 out back..getting excited...its a lil bit more than I wanted to spend ...I was originally going to get an FJ..and put some TRD shocks and exhaust..

But..after going back and forth..I feel the 4R will fit me a lil better...just going to coast a lil more to get it the way I want. ;l

Agreed...At least they didn't make them chrome. I guess they had to save it all for the bumper!

Yea not for me tho..I hate all the chrome on it..and KDSS system is just top notch from all the reading I have done..Even on the lexus GX forums people love that suspension.

I know you have already stated that you are not going to off-road this vehicle, but if u follow the path you've laid out - TE KDSS, Toytech coil overs/5100's in the rear, 18" rims and some decent AT tires you will have a very capable vehicle should you ever want/need to!

Don't forget to exercise your locker at least 3 or 4 times a year or it may stop working for you....

well i did use you tire fitment guide to get sidewall difference

but i am not talking about low profile tires, i am talking about the difference between the 17 OEM size per your chart vs the 20 OEM size.

265/70/17 vs 245/60/20

now if he was running like 45-50 sidewall ratio i could understand. i still go back to my original, if your hitting a pothole at a speed that it causes a flat, then more likely your going to cause a flat regardless of if your using the 17 OEM size or the 20 OEM size.

now if they would bring back the old 31x10.5 sizes from the old days, that would fun


edit : i know people here have run into the famous detroit potholes, especially i75/i94 (i can attest to them visiting family in xmas).

Up here in Canada, our potholes definitely require a robust tire and rim.
