4Runner vs Explorer

My son was considering a 4th gen and I recently clocked numerous miles behind a 5th gen.

I always felt that 5th gens are special. Even when people dump 5th gens for Audis they still can't get past 5th gens and keep watching 5th gen forums. Love or hate it, but you won't be indifferent after you drove T4R for awhile: )

Congrats! Did you see my old Runner for sale while searching? I traded it in at Mid Rivers Jeep and I think Weiss Toyota bought it off them later. Had new BFG ATs...would be a good whip for someone looking for a 7300 mile used Runner. Hey if you need any factory rubber mats or other stuff check the for sale thread. Ive got some stuff in there for 5th Gens. Im out in St Charles County :driving:

Well, actually I may stick around to enrage some of you thin skinned webwheelers or until I sell some of my 5th Gen stuff.

Ive had 3 Runners. I liked 2 out of 3. Ive always liked Jeeps and 4Runners. No need to get angry at me from going from one to the other. Who knows, if my Jeep turns out to be a huge POS I will be sharing on the Jeep forums and enraging all of them praising the next 4Runner if they make something nice again. Trust me, I give 4Runners plenty of praise to ignorant Jeep fanbois and vice versa.

I wonder if his brand new jeep is one of those that was recalled..

Looks like Ford is upping the ante (if you can stomach the unibody Explorer) with a 365 HP engine and twin turbo V6, getting 22 MPG highway. Still would never purchase one, but for those needing twin turbos.......

What Is The Point Of The Ford Explorer Sport?

We've known for a while that Ford is unleashing a higher performance version of the Explorer this fall.

Dubbed the Explorer Sport, it has 365 horsepower from its twin turbo V6 and gets 22 MPG on the highway, the best of any seven-passenger SUV. It's basically an Explorer SHO. But what's the point?

The Taurus SHO and Explorer Sport share so much in common that it isn't funny. It has the same underpinnings and engine. It just gets worse gas mileage and is higher, which means it handles worse.

This is a Taurus SHO wagon with a lift kit. The biggest issue is that the off road cred that the Explorer used to have is further tarnished due to the gigantic wheels and the unibody construction.

Why does it exist? It's simple: Sales. Ford will sell tons of these to people that want power but not a lame Taurus sedan. They want something bigger that will handle and stop worse, and the Explorer Sport will fill that niche.

On the other hand, if you'd told us a few years ago we'd be able to get something AWD with room for seven, gets 22 MPG and has 365 horsepower we'd have said: in your dreams.

What do you think of it?

I think that if I was on market for a minivan the new Explorer would be a perfect match : )

High power SUV's = nothing new. The obvious Porsche,BMW,Audi blah blah BUT....
Jeep did it, GMC did it, "Poopers" You wanna go Fast? Buy a Fast car.
You wanna 4x4 or truck or SUV...... Why mix the two?
I don't want to go out and drink beers with my Best Friend "Nancy" either.

I think I'll wait until Consumer Reports gets their hands on one before I believe those mpg ratings. The F150 ecoboost is rated at 15/21 while the V8 5.0 is rated at 14/19. They get identical gas mileage in CR's city, hwy, and road trip tests while being only 0.1 seconds difference in the 1/4 mi and 0-60.

Comparing a Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland to an SR5 T4R is kind of a mismatch. The Overland is a $45K + vehicle and the SR5 is around 33K. I drove the JGC and the Durango hemi AWD. The Dodge tracked like a slot car compared to the Jeep, but it's not for off road. Both have Mercedes Benz derived chassis's and the interiors are great.

I'd never buy either new since Chrysler products are not known for resale. I tend to think Toyotas will continue to have great resale......I know it defies logic, but they will.

Keep us posted on the Jeep. Incidentally the 2013 models will only be a short run (half year) model as the 2014's will be out early with the new ZF 8 speed and the improved heads for the Pentastar V-6. Hopefully then they can put a lower rear end other than the 3:06 axle they currently offer.
