Not turning into an argument just trying to point out older cars are not safer than newer.

I'm surprised your bumper received as little damage as it did. I know it's made out of metal, but its like tin foil. I pulled mine while it was in mint shape and got $250 for it on craigslist. I put it towards my 140 lb 4Xinnovations bumper which I've slammed into rocks, dirt and tree roots that would have surely crumpled the stock bumper and possibly damaged my rear quarters or tailgate.
If anyone is contemplating getting an aftermarket rear bumper, I highly recommend doing what I did. Between the stock mint rear bumper and trailer hitch, I made over $400 which nicely offset the cost of the new (indestructible) bumper

Exactly. That youtube video is great at showing this very point. Vehicles are immensely safer today than 50 years ago. Vehicles today are sacrificial crumple zones, and drivers routinely walk away from major accidents where even 30 years ago they would have dies in
Also true... The original point was toughness, though toughness isn't worth much if you're dead. The OP is lucky it wasn't a bad hit, but just a little less or more swerving and it could have been a rollover, in which case he'd appreciated the crumpliness of the modern vehicle.

Yeah but that's only $200 worth of upgrades for a DSM
. I bet the new bumper for the t4r costs more.

Glad you are ok and you are going to get a nice new bumper. Make sure that bumper end didn't push up or into your quarter and do more damage than you can see.
I don't know of anyone driving a 1959 4runner. We're talking about late 90s early 2000s here peeps, they have crash tested these and they do pretty well on safety. The NTSB does crash tests at low and high speeds to determine both safety and cost to repair, even the 5mph tests on new cars are expensive because of sacrificial plastic parts. I replaced a bumper at work one day and noticed the price of a plastic lower valence was $800! For plastic! As with a lot of things today, they are meant to be thrown away instead of repaired and enjoyed for decades. I doubt you'll see a 2016 Chevy Malibu or Corolla or Festiva roll down the street as a classic ever, because there won't be any left! :biggrin1:

I Read an article the other day about the average cost of a 5mph collision using many of todays popular economy cars. The average cost was 5000 dollars, because the plastic styrofoam bumpers were destroyed.
Well thank god for those stupid kids driving economy cars with styro foam bumpers because if i do get in an accident, the other car will be my crumplezone. My tube reinforced plate steel bumper wont be crumpling, and my truck wont be totalled and i have airbags.
Physics.
And for the record, because i mostly use my bumper for offroad and not for getting into car crashes i appreciate the steel.

I came to this thread for the title. It made me laugh having rented a Ford es-cap-eh before. It turned out to be better than expected with the random tangent a few posts in.
OP, I had someone hit me on the same spot last summer. I had her cash me out for the lowest reasonable shop quote. She was happy, I was happy.

Ohh it did hit the quarter panel a little. Which is very good! More money. It also looks like rear hatch was pushed a little, which is more money! Its nothing major at all and wont eve worry about fixing that. I just need as much possible. Maybe supercharger will be in store. LOL

I mentioned it to her, but she just wanted to do insurance. Her vehicle was really messed up so she needs hers fixed under insurance and she simply implied she just wants insurance to pay for the damages. Claim is already going, and estimates will be done soon.

Been rear ended 3 times. The first one was w/ a Jeep Grand Cherokee. The only damages that my Runner received were a bent rear bumper along w/ the rear lift gate and a cracked tail light. The Grand Cherokee was a lot worse. She had those grill guards which forced the front end to bend and popped her hood open. And we were in rush hour traffic on the freeway, probably going no more than 15-20 mph.
The second one was on the streets and the lady had an older model Jetta. She wasn't paying attention when I stopped for a red light and she hit me. Same damage minus the bent rear lift gate. Her car was worse. Bent front hood, damaged front bumper and punctured her radiator.
The last one was another female driver in stop and go traffic on the freeway. She was rear ended and she ended up rear ending me. Again, minor damage to the rear bumper only and another cracked tail light. Her damage was her hood and her bumper.

They included the paint that is very minimal and wont cost much. He showed me how the damage from my tail gate did not happen from the wreck. Which I believe is true. He also said it could go up a little if they found something after taking the bumper off. Im bringing it to another shop for estimate but from my experience when trying to get them to cut me a check they always go with the lowest estimate. If I want another shop to do the work with a high estimate they will cut the shop the check. At least thats how the insurance agent is making it sound.

Gotcha. $500 isn't bad still.
Over the summer I was parked at home depot when a storm came through. I came out to the 4Runner to find a cart pushed into the bumper with a pretty good sized dent in the bumper too. I went inside and filled out a report because I didn't think that the cart could have caused that much damage and assumed that I had been backed into by a big truck with trailer hitch or so. A few days later home depots insurance called and said they were gonna review the video footage and if home depot was liable they would pay for the damages, and if they were not they were gonna write me a feel good compensation check for $200.
They called back a few days later and said that home depot was not liable (surprise surprise) and sent me a check for $200, which I was still happy with. One $5 american flag magnet later the dent is hardly noticeable, and the rest went to a set of weather techs, vent visors, and a taco whip antenna haha.

LOL nice, that sucks they felt they where not reliable but awesome they still helped you out. Looks like I will be getting addicted offroads rear tube.
