I was able to play around a bit in my TE tonight. I found out very quickly that when driving through the deep snow (18-20” powder) its very very important to keep your speed. When you stop, it isn’t easy to get going again.
For what it’s worth, this was my first time really playing around with any of the traction control settings. My ‘16 TE is stock, except for a 1” leveling kit on the front. I started out in 4HI and turned the traction control and skid control off. (Long press of the button turns of both levels).
When I inevitably got high-centered, I tried various combinations of multi terrain select, rear diff locker, and ATRAC. What seemed to work the best however was 4LO, repeatedly going reverse & forward to make a bit of a runway, and then finally putting it back in 4HI and driving forward while turning the steering wheel lock to lock with some generous amounts of throttle. The truck was able to free itself without me having to start digging.
I am quite disappointed with the way the 4Runner drives in 2HI when there is a few inches on the road. I find that I am spinning the tires more often then not, but I know it is attributed to my empty trunk. I am however extremely impressed with the standard traction control when the tires do slip, or when I begin to slide. I always feel safe and in-control (assisted of course) when they kick in.
