4runners in snow

I really do not care at all for front wheel drive, AWD/4WD or RWD for me!!

I own them all... so I can't hate. My favorite front wheel drive car to date was an Acura Integra Type R with a LSD front diff.

Short course autocross they generally do better than most Corvette and right up there with WRX / STI guys. Best FWD driving experience I ever had.

That said, most FWD cars are lame, which is why I said FWD is transportation... My Acura TL is a nice car, but it's just a city cruiser daily driver.

Most all my toys, off-road stuff, is RWD / AWD. Raptor 700 ATV, Silverado, 4Runner

If I ever get around to another track car, the AWD Focus RS seems tempting.

that may be more due to the wheelbase than the drivetrain. I have noticed that my wife's C300 (4MATIC) does better on short course autocross than my CLS 63 AMG. I have two RWD, both V8's and 2 AWD/4WD, both V6 and I of course always get FWD whenever I rent a car and ICK, I haven't owned a FWD for 5+ years, doubt I will again, at least not on if I can help it.

PSA: don’t forget to clean the snow/ice out of your wheels otherwise expect to have all sorts of crazy vibrations when you get up to highway speed. My steering wheel had a solid 1” of shimmy in it today at 65mph....

I don’t think they are overkill at all. I put dedicated snows on all my vehicles. 4Runner first I haven’t. Running KO2s. They do great getting me through the deep. On ice/slush and highway driving on a few inches there is no comparison. The snow tires far outcompete the KO2s. Ive run Nokians on all my RRs, and wife’s Q7 has studded Blizzaks. With that AWD system and those studded tires, it incredibly stable and rarely slips.
So it depends on your driving, knowing how your tires handle in both 2wd and 4wd. With the KO2s I keep the truck in 4hi a lot when the roads have any snow on them. And for an AT the KO2s are pretty good in the snow. In 4wd the 4Runner and the KO2 are a good combo.

Hi All-

I bought my 2021 TRD ORP on January 8th and haven’t had a chance to try out the 4WD/off road features yet. We have been hit by the recent winter storms and so far have about 8”-10” of snow. I’ve had 4WD vehicles before but it’s been several years. I’ve RTFM and a lot of posts on here and would like to get any pointers on driving in the snow before I get out.

My initial thought is to start off with 4H w/MTS Sand and Mud. My main concern is getting out of our street; as soon as I back out of the driveway I have a short run up before I get to a stop sign on an uphill incline. I watched a 4WD pickup make it through today but he just slowed down and turned right (it’s a t intersection so you have to turn left or right and our neighborhood is not heavily populated so most of the time no one comes to a complete stop in good weather). My main concern is if I have to come to a complete stop and 4H doesn’t get me going if I’ll have time to shift into 4L without sliding backward.

Any thoughts appreciated, thanks!

Unless yours is different form my ‘19 you can use MTS unless you’re in 4L. Unless the road is pure ice, you probably won’t slide backwards while shifting into 4L from 4H unless you let your foot off the brake even with stock tires. Accelerating is easy, braking and steering will be harder.
