4Running Daily's Build Thread

^Lol dude! Can't wait to see them on your truck!
Even though we didn't officially "meet" the other day, it was cool talking to ya in person man.

My thermostats set at the 6 o'clock position instead of 12 or something like that. I can't remember. It might be the other way round

It should be at the 6 o'clock position at all times per the FSM. One system you don't want to tax in the 4runner, or any car for that matter, is the cooling system.

Perform the magazine test on the fan clutch and check the coolant. I have found in all my autos that by the fifteenth year the fan clutch is gone or on its last leg.

Damn. For me normal is 195-205 and 98% of time Coolant-In is about 202 on the ScanGauge.

About the same for me. My scangauge usually reads 200-204.

Alright, so now that I am home, I should fully explain all the things I currently know.

The other day around 4 pm I was leaving work. I started the car (cold start) and it sounded rough. It honestly felt like I was firing on 5 cylinders, like an injector was out. No big deal, dealt with injectors before. But after about a minute, the car felt fine.

The next morning (yesterday morning) I started the car and it had a rough idle again, same symptoms as before. Still no engine codes, or check engine light, nothing. After a minute it was gone.

Then today, my scan gauge was actually hooked up. (The stupid Mercedes had a check engine light I was reading). I was driving away from work today again, no rough start. Temperature was rising quickly. It got to 224*F before I shut it off. Then later this evening I drove home from work at 8:30pm. Engine was cold again. Got home with it only getting to 195*F. So then it became time to check everything.

Coolant overflow tank= Empty
Radiator= Took about 1/3 gallon of coolant to fill the radiator to the top.
Coolant that was in the radiator looked clean.
Oil was also just as clean as when I put it in there.

Filled Radiator and overflow tank. Drove about 6 miles, coolant never got over 188*F (Normal for me).

Did the shop put on new heads last time or not? I can't remember. I'd go with bad HG.

I vote for a 2UZ-FE to be dropped in there.

Probably a stupid question but have you seen any leaking fluid?

Probably time for a leak down test.

Haven't seen any fluid, although I already have 2 different fluids leaking from under my car (Oil and Power Steering), so it could have been mixed in with those hahaha.

I'm doing a compression test now. I haven't lost a drop of fluid since yesterday.

If the compression test looks good, I'll be driving it 12 hours to Sequoia National Forest and back.

Here's to hoping that this unfortunate event puts the wrapping on the back burner.

If you're bored, plastidip it. You could pay for it to be done and it'd still be cheaper than the wrap.

Good luck with the cooling issue... I know how annoying that can be.

Compression came back relatively low. I'm taking it camping anyways. This motor can be toast, I don't care. I'm driving until it has holes in it. Worry about it later. Hahaha
