4th gen 4Runner double din

I just installed a 6.5 inch DVD/GPS and was wondering if anyone has installed one without the dash kit? I have a metra dash kit installed now but I'm going to be taking it back out and it was a pain fitting it with the plastic dash kit. Wondering if it will look stupid without it because installing it without would be much easier? I'm doing the antenna adapters and eventually steering wheel controls. The unit came with trim pieces that may help cover where the dash kit goes also.

I was just looking at upgrading my HU on my 4th gen as well and was wondering the same thing. The install guys said that I needed to buy an install kit for an aftermarket double din to work. Due to the cost and having to buy all the adapters for the steering wheel and what not, I decided to go the Scion FRS HU mod. No kit required for that one.

From what I read in my research before my purchase, most aftermarket double dins need a kit to install.

Yeah I installed the dash kit from metra already but its very snugg and I was wondering if it would look good without it? You still us the stock brackets to mount it. The metra dash kit is to cover up the gap on the sides mainly.

I have mine installed without the dash kit currently, so there's a gap on both sides. I think it looks pretty silly personally. I already ordered the kit to put in.

I have pictures somewhere in the 4th gen section of it.

I installed a single din Pioneer headunit and a Yaesu FT-2900 ham radio into mine without a dash kit...

It really doesn't bother me, its very functional, and I dont really care about looks, but you can see the factory cage which I just screwed everything to though the gaps on both sides...
