4th gen 4Runner Secrets?

I've added a bottle of scotch, lube and rope. Who knows what freaky stuff the next owner will do/need. :lol:

Make sure the seal is not broken on the bottle of scotch, last thing you need is for a LEO that has a 4Runner to pull you over and knows that secret compartment is there and looks to find an "open container"!! :doh:

8. To turn off your seat belt chime in a MY2008 do the following:

1) make sure the trip meter is in ODO mode.

2) turn the key to the ON position (dont start)

3) within a few seconds of turning it to ON, press and hold the trip reset for 15 seconds

4) while holding the trip reset, buckle drivers seat belt

5) odo reading will change to "B-on"

6) press trip reset once to change to " B-off”

What's odd is I have that same remote, but nowhere to use it.
There's a little LCD screen above the seats, but it doesn't seem to do anything.

I've heard it requires magic Toyota headphones to use, which I don't have.

Do you want my wireless headphones? You'll need to find some foam for the ear cover things (they cracked/rotted long ago) but I *think* they still work, though it's been a while since they got use. I got a new head unit and didn't bother with the rear seat stuff, will send them to you for shipping cost.

My t4r had 2 previous owners before me. I'm guessing for the 70k the 2nd owner had the t4r, they never knew about this cubby, because I found a box of condoms, expiring in 2009, insurance card from 2007, pencil, pen, old cell phone maybe from 2005?, and a few miscellaneous things.

PSA: Don't store condoms in a small compartment with sharp pencils and pens that has 100+ degree temperature variations over time.

A "secret" to me was that there's a glove box light - mine had always been burned out I guess, yours probably is too if you don't know about it. I just put a red LED in there, not the brightest but it's a tiny bulb so even with nice LED not much light output. Better than nothing and looks cool at night, which is the only time it's on anyway (when headlights are on). Will probably go with bright white to match other interior LED's next time.

I had my owners manual in that spot but now keep a small pistol/holster & magazines secured to the bottom w/ velcro. Not the most convenient, but I haven't found a better spot without it being out in the open (break-in magnet!) and most of the time it stays there, do not carry on person that much. I have CCDW so I could put in anywhere, but in the SE, KY included, it's legal in glove box even without a carry license.

I just did the seatbelt secret this morning. Thank you all. I'm more of a "get rolling down the street for a minute before buckling up" kind of guy.

I used a 74 wedge LED. Be careful with that little plastic cage - I tried to open/pull on the wrong side and tore it off the hinge. You can probably replace bulb without touching it with some small needle nose pliers and patience.

It only turns on when headlights or parking lights are on, and I understand it may not turn off when closed (no switch) so I'd go LED for a little more longevity. Hence why they're always burned out.

It only turns on when headlights or parking lights are on, and I understand it may not turn off when closed (no switch) so I'd go LED for a little more longevity. Hence why they're always burned out.

Cool! I was hoping to find a LED replacement. I'm all about LEDs... VLeds reverse bulbs and interior LEDs coming soon (I hope). Thanks for the help!

NP, I got both my reverse lights and that little glove box bulb from VLEDS, reverse lights are amazing but pricey. You can probably find the glove box 74 wedge cheaper locally. I bought a red one from VLEDS and it's cool and all, but I'll go regular bright white next time. Highly recommended:

I should've clarified: I installed the reverse bulbs today and I'm super impressed. Just ordered the glove box replacement from VLeds - I like the 5000k, and since it's the same company I know the color will be consistent. Thanks again for the help and recommendations!

I ripped the cage thing off. It obstructs the light anyway! And I agree small needle nose pliers with tape to protect the bulb.

Well now I'm intrigued, I'm going out when it gets dark, turn the lights on and climb in the glove box and close it, I'll report back if the light goes out or not!! :thumb:

When I first got my 4runner I discovered the secret glove box compartment and found the original owners W2 form, some cards, and prescription meds... lol. Just chucked it all. Now it is a great place to keep my XDS when I'm not carrying

One tip that I don't think was mentioned in this thread, is that you need to reprogram automatic functions on windows (driver, rear, sunroof) after disconnecting your battery. You do it by putting it all the way up, pushing it all the way down and holding it down for several seconds.

I found $250 cash in there along with few tokens to a local car wash. I contacted the previous owner to return the cash and he said to keep it. He appreciated the honesty and told me we both came out on top where I have a beautiful 4R and he was compensated fairly for sale without being lowballed too hard.

Call me dumb, but after 2 years of 4Runner ownership, I just realized you can open and close the rear window by using the key on the back tailgate. All this time, I've been frustratingly closing it by running to the front, turning the car on, and closing it from the center stack.

lol, had our 4r since May and discovered this 2 weeks ago myself, well actually the wife did, and we both thought the same thing. Way more convenient, and I like that it locks the doors too once it's all the way back up! [emoji1303]
