Would a Yellow Top D35 work?

I guess they know what they are talking about, but I am nearly certain that my OEM Panasonic battery is a group 31. I wouldn't want to downgrade to a lesser size if I didn't have to.

I found this old thread, and it does look like the OEM Panasonic is a group 31:

Toyota recommends a size 24F for the 4th-gen, but Optima does not make any batteries in this size. Their solution is the 34R Red Top for 24F applications (many other Toyota's use a 24F). A 35 will also work according to them.

The 105D31L number on the Panasonic battery Toyota installs is based on the Japanese Industrial Standard and is different from the BCI standard used in the US. According to Toyota, the closest size to the 105D31L is a 27F. I believe the 31 from Optima is too big to fit, but I remember reading many 1st-gen Tundra owners switching to a 31 Optima over on tundrasolutions.com but needing some modifications to get it to fit correctly.

I have an Optima Yellow Top D31A in my 06 4Runner and it fits, but barely (hangs over the tray an inch or two and is at the limit of height).

You can see the clearance and how it fits the stock battery tray.
One thing to watch out for is the terminals on Optimas are reversed, so the stock cables might not fit. I have a Priority Start unit (http://www.prioritystart.com/ps_pro.html), so the stock cables did not need to reach all the way to the battery terminals. I have heard people say they had trouble making them reach, so YMMV.

I believe the only Optima that fits without modification is the Red Top 34R with the lift block.

I have the yellow top 35 / 78 and had to get shorter battery tray hooks (did not have lift block) and extend the ground cable as it was to short.

I just purchased my battery

I just got an optima red top, I went to Costco in San Antonio and the guy told me that the battery for a 2004 4runner sr5 was a 35.... no sure if I bought the right one but it works great! I bought two 12' subs so I got a better battery and it works amazing!

My 2004 V8 is still using the original battery for starting. I added an Optima Bluetop for auxiliary stuff (fridge, HAM, etc). I almost replaced the original starter a year ago with a Redtop, but decided to wait for the OEM one to go bad. Seven years and still waiting...

I'm inclined to just get another Toyota batt if this one evr dies.

I just bought an Optima 34R red top to replace the 24F in my 2008 4Runner.

Elevation wise, it fits well on the shim block that comes with the battery. You do have to push it far from center in order to get the short ground terminal attached, and then you end up having to pull the positive cable terminal a little harder than I'd like to attach it. But it fits.

I cut up an old bicycle tire and used the rubber U shape of that to wrap around the mounting bar that goes across the battery, because it was maybe half an inch from the positive terminal.

Red tops, blue tops, and yellow tops come in many sizes to fit different vehicles. The colors have to do with the different battery types. The blue top is a deep cycle marine battery. Red is for cranking amps. Yellow is for inbetween uses like starting your truck and also running a winch...

Double check the manufactured date code. If it's more than 6 months old, don't buy it. Batteries go bad if they are not charged regularly. Technically, they can charge it and use a sticker to change the date code and any warranties begin timing on date of sale. I don't like that because you have no way of knowing how or when they recharged it. Take your old battery in for an exchange or they will charge you a core charge. Recyclers pay $.15/lb in some places if you don't exchange your old battery.

The Bluetop is ether the same as yellow or red depending on the grey outer shell. Light grey = Yellow/Deep cycle. Dark Grey = Red / starting. The only difference is all the blue tops have stainless marine terminals.

I am running a group 31 Bluetop deep cycle.
