Driving to the Arctic in a 2008 4runner Limited.

Hi All. First post and first 4runner. Thought to write here rather than start a new topic. Been a while since someone wrote here so hope not butting in on a conversation.

I am picking up a 2008 Limited V6 model tomorrow. The truck was a Trade-In at a big dealer here in Canada, 160,000 km on the clock, 100,000 miles.

I am going to drive this truck from Toronto to Tuktoyaktuk in March 2016. (around 15,000km) round trip roughly. During the trip will be fighting the cold, and mostly driving on the highway. The hardest drive will be the Alaska highway, the Dempster Highway and the ice road to Tuk. Remote, slippy, chance for very hard weather.

Would love some info on tires. What you would recommend? Looked at the All-Terrain T/A® KO as know a few people up in the Yukon who swear by these summer and winter. They have them on their trucks.

18 inch rims on the limited (P265/60R18), would rather use the stock rims instead of buying another set. What do you think, would there be a rubbing issue with All-Terrain T/A® KO on those rims?

Thanks for any suggestions and thoughts on tires. Recommendations would be much appreciated.

I've seen 8 4runners so far in the last few months down here in florida (most rust buckets with shitty paint, and V8s without their timing belts done)

Im now looking at 2..

2006 SR5 4x4, V6, black, no sunroof (car from south carolina), 95k miles, 5 speed auto, drivetrain is solid..

2004 SR5 4x4, V6, grey, sunroof (snowbird from NY), 65k miles, 4 speed auto, no rust..

the 2006 needs a paint job, price would be basically the same after I paint it, maintenance and mods (tint,spacers, lift, tires,touch screen nav) is done on both vehicle..

which one would you choose?

That's a tough decision. If the 2006 doesn't have a lot of rust then I think I would lean more towards it. It has more power and is just newer. I also would prefer to own a face lift model but I have nothing against the pre face lift models. My previous Runner was an 03 V6 and it had enough power, but it's always nice to have more. That's why I sold it and got a V8. Also you can start with a nice new paint job and get a paint that's more durable than the Toyota paint and not have to deal with fading fender flares. My previous Runner also had a sunroof and my current one doesn't. I do miss it a little as I did use it with me being located in SoCal, but with me being 6'2" the extra headroom is nice. I don't hit my head on the ceiling anymore after hitting something hard off-road. Either vehicle is a solid choice and should be ok.

Wanting to screwdown cargo system into the holes.

If I had to guess, 8 or 10mm. That seems to be the standard size bolt for the interior.

Bought the wife a 2007 V6 Sport Edition V6 back in July 93k miles, all been great so far (except sunroof drain holes), except recently. When trying to start it just clicks a few times; doesn't turn over at all. All power inside works fine, windows, radios, etc. Looks like we could have an original battery. Does this sound like the battery isn't putting enough amps through to start but has the juice to power everything else? I'm thinking a new battery will fix this, just thought I would ask here first.

if you hear it clicking, it's probably not the starter. if you can 'jump' it after hooking up the battery to a donor car for a few minutes, definitely pull the battery and have it tested at autozone/etc and then a new one if needed.

Personally I would buy the cheapest battery with a 5yr warranty, but that's just me.

If it was just a low battery it shuold have attempted to turn the starter a little bit. If you had continued to try to start it it probably would have turned over eventually. The jump start and new battery may mask the actual issue of corroded starter contacts. If (when) it happens again in a couple weeks or so, read through this thread to fix the underlying issue.
