4th Gen DRL Disable

Hey guys. I've been having problems with my right side turn signal on the front not working. My vehicle has the DRLs factory installed. I replaced the bulb and it did not fix the problem.

I checked voltage at the receptacle and had none. I then pierced the insulation just behind the connector and had voltage. Upon closer inspection of the bulb receptacle, I found the plastic housing is showing signs of heat damage, and the positive side had a build-up on the contact which was preventing good contact between it and the bulb contacts.

I used a file to gently clean off the crap, but it's bound to happen again. I know I can have the stealer shut it off with the scan tool, (which I need to have some other functions performed with the scan tool anyway), but if I decide to ever enable them again, I don't want to have to go back to them again just to do it.

I did a search for DRL disable on here, and basically only came up with that option, or replace the turn signal/DRL relay, which to me is the best option. However, the part numbers given don't match up with anything. Anyone else have issues with them or have a better option? On my previous vehicle, I simply pulled a power wire out of the DRL connector (and cap of course) to disable the DRLs. That would be fine with me too.

Thanks CJ3Flyr! Those are great links. I'm actually going through the wiring diagrams right now and before I buy a $40 relay, I think I'll pull mine apart and see what I can do with it first. It's just a freakin relay. It's gotta be pretty simple to remove/disconnect the internal pass-through for the DRLs.

I mean really. Come on, that's a lot for a relay...

Well, I found a wire that is on the Overall Wiring Diagrams, but not in the diagram for the individual system of Turn Signals & Hazards. And it's labeled DRL from the Body ECU to pin 12 of the turn signal & DRL relay.

This might just be my best option yet. Time to remove that wire from the connector...

That's a lot better option than spending $40 in my book.

Edit: I just thought of something. Hopefully it doesn't affect the hazard lights for the theft deterrent. Even if it does though, I'm going to install my DEI alarm in the near future here. So, not that big of a deal.

Edit again: This wire has to be solely for the DRLs. Vehicles without the DRLs have the same theft deterrent, and the lights flash just fine. Because it flashes the parking lights. Duh. Sorry, just talking this out for my own benefit LOL.

Well, I did just find it in the individual diagrams - for the multiplex systems.

Ok. Well I just went out and pulled the DRL wire out of the DRL / Turn Signal flasher relay, and Bingo! It works! No more DRLs, and I can enable or disable as I see fit. I may even put a switch on it to control it that way.

Obviously I covered the bare pin (w/ heat shrink), then zip tied it to the rest of the harness for easy access. The relay itself is mounted to the backside of the body ECU.

And I still have $40 in my pocket. Gotta love those freebie mods.

You've gotta be freakin kidding me! Great link though. Oh well, at least I felt like I accomplished something finding that DRL wire. I really like what he did with the switch and the transfer letters.

I have some extra switches. Might just have to try that...
Hmmm, I wonder if I can get the lettering to illuminate...

Unfortunately I can't find the pictures I took, however, if you are sitting in the driver's seat, the flasher is approximately in front of your left knee. There's a small panel in the knee bolster trim panel so you can access the fuses right? That fuse panel is part of the body ECU. Now, if you remove the knee bolster panel, and lower the body ECU, you will see the flasher mounted to the back side of where the fuses are.

Hope that's clearer than mud, but until I have a reason to go back in there, that's about all I can offer for now...

I know I'm reviving an old thread - just bought a 2005 SR5.

Curious if I put a Push Button Style switch in for the DRL and just turn it off and on when I want, will the blinker functionality still work?

Yes. Everything else will work as it came from the factory (if wired correctly). I used a regular Toyota switch (I'm using an Aux light switch) so it fits my blanks. I can turn my DRLs on and off when I want.


I actually wired my DRL's to ground so when the switch is on, even with the headlights on, the DRLs will be on. The way the DRLs are originally wired, they turn off when the headlights are turned on.


If you don't have a Toyota switch, I have an extra one (it's painted over so it looks like a blank) that I can sell you if you want. Just let me know.

Was Curious on how I should wire it. I see the Green and two reds and a black.

I just want the DRLs to work when I push the button, along with the illumination of the button. How would one accomplish that through the 4 wires?
