4th gen snorkel

Im going to be installing the same snorkel as Alex Jet on my 05 V6. I will take notes and pictures of the process. Im using a cheapo Chinese snorkel from Amazon $116 . If it works Ill be happy and if I have to throw it away it wont hurt too much. I can always get the same model from safari if it doesn't last. I know a lot of guys want to snorkel their 4th gen so stay tuned !

Do you want a snorkel just for the looks of it, or do you want it to actually do its thing when you are wading deep water? Somehow, "cheapo Chinese snorkel" doesn't inspire confidence, especially in the case of a mission-critical component like a snorkel. But good luck to ya!

have you seen Josh's truck? If you take one look at it you will know the answer to that question. I think he wheels it harder than 90% of the people on here.

a snorkel is literally a plastic tube.. it's not like he's buying a cheap timing belt, i don't really see how a snorkel could fail. Half the guys I know that have them use PVC connectors and flexible hoses etc to get it to the intake anyway to the actual snorkel itself doesn't really even matter. hell, i know one guy who has a snorkel made with stuff at home depot. I'd much rather save the 300 bucks on it personally but to each his own :thumb3:
 
I'm trying to find the article, but am failing at it. But recently I read of a red 4th gen with a snorkel that got totalled from a water crossing. It was in a Toyota Land Cruiser magazine that comes every other month, the name of the magazine is eluding me right now.

The gist of the article was the vehicles computers were all lower than even the factory intake height, and after the vehicle flooded with water in the passenger compartment, it died and had to be towed out. The insurance company wound up totalling out the truck.

Just a heads up that while you might not swamp the engine, you certainly can swamp the electronics which is probably worse. I seriously doubt the snorkel will give you any more ability to cross deep water.

Plenty of other stories of FJ Cruisers frying electronics after water crossings on the net, so just a heads up.

I want a snorkel mainly for its looks but it's very dusty here so it will serve some purpose too.

I'm not concerned much about water crossing, I cross rivers deep enough to be concerned only two or three times a year.

This, I won't cross anything that's deeper than my balls :D I had a scare moment last summer when a bow wave came upon the hood while crossing a small river. It was a narrow crossing, 60 feet maybe and it didn't look deep so I just felt lazy to step out and check.

On a side note, I'll be doing rear diff breather mod, snorkel or not.

How much heating, bending cutting did you have to do to get the fit that tight?

Did you make the A-pillar bracket or was it supplied?

Also, did the kit have the tube that goes from the snorkle to the air box or did you have to make it?
 
can i see more pics of this?? looks great and fits tight! this has been on my to-do list for awhile now!! you've inspired me to tackle it, haha
 
Have you got a link to the exact snorkel you got? Also x2 on the heating bending question! Looks really good how well does it sit on the fender? I have been eyeingEbay Snorkel

This has the advantage of not needing to fit the fender as well since it does run across the top.
 
I got the snotkel because afyer i trimmed the fender liners when installing my demello bumper i vaporlocked my truck in 18 inches of water from spashing water entering the factory intake location. I dont do very deep water but ssh ometimes its deeper than expected. The chinr s e snorkel is the same as the 400 dollar safari. So far the onlyshortcoming is tgat the hardware isnt stainless and is already rusting so i need to get some better screws for the pillar support. I bent the pillar support to fit the angle better. It still isnt plumbed up yet but it will be as soon as it warms up a bit.
 
Looks good OP! I didn't want the whole safari look so i bought all the supplies to do the internal snorkel mod. Just need some time to get it all done.

How strong/thick is that snorkel? I am asking you to make a value judgement not take measurements. Because I would love to do that but I am scared that here in FL with all the trees and vines i would be getting out every ten minutes with the axe and machete to keep from ripping that thing off. Dang I envy the western guys...
