4th Gen Suspension Options/FAQ

best route for 3in lift

I've owned my 2004 sr5 for a year now and I've had a 3in spacer lift on there front for about 3 months that I just threw in there when I was replacing both front wheel bearings and had the front end apart. However, Im looking to do the full suspension lift the right way in a month or two and was thinking about doing the 5100 all around ($375 shipped) and moog 2007 fj coils all around ($104 shipped from rock auto)
Is this a good way to get the full 3in out of it and install it with a buddy who knows what he's doing? I've read so much info on here and i think this is what everyone meant. Also would there be any extra parts needed as well?
P.S. sorry for beating the dead horse on this topic

Happen to have a photo of your rig handy?

Trying to attach photo, dont know if it worked.

I"m at 38" to the fender lip in the front and 39 1/4" for the rear. this is with 255/80 17's

not a lift question

Guys I was reading here an older thread extolling the springs of the 4th Gen Sport model. Can some of you tell me what IS the diff between 06-09 Sport Model Springs and same year SR5 Springs? And in the Sport model, are the springs different in 4WD model vs 2WD? I am not interested in Lift, but in 2-lane backroad ride quality, which is awful with Stock SR5. Rock 'n Roll..
thx

[Edit: nevermind - I think most of what I'm wondering is in this excellent thread http://www.toyota-4runner.org/4th-gen-t4rs/162125-coil-rates-oem-4runner-oem-fj-moog-others-5.html ]

I have a 04 Limited with XREAS and im getting a rough country lift that states its 3in and it works with the XREAS system. Is this a good route for the money? Im planning on that and 285/70s on stock 17s

3in Series II Suspension Lift Kit for 03-09 Toyota 4wd 4-Runners w/X-REAS [761] | Rough Country Suspension Systems®

If anyone has any suggestions that would help too

What are you trying to get from the lift? Just appearance? Want to actually offroad?

This is fine for just appearance. If you want to offroad a lot, go a full shock/spring setup all around. It's way better than a spacer setup. But if you're not trying to reinvent the wheel, this will do.

Yeah it's mostly just for looks because this is my daily driver and I do take it off road like at trails at the lake and beach but I'm not taking it in the mud or rocks anytime soon. I just want it to clear 285/70/17s and have the stance look nice.

If your pairing with 5100s

Any reason for the Eibachs over the OMEs other than price?

Dont mind a little rake, but do you think setting at 0.85 would cause problems?

Would it be better to go with the 2885 front coil and leave bilsteins at 0?

Thanks

the OME coil spring rates are too high for the 5100s that are valved for more OE spring rates like the elbach or dobinson coils. If you go OME go complete OME..

Need your experience: lifting rear XREAS with Weeler/Eibach 1.5 springs

Community - need your help!!! - Wheelers did not know if this could be done successfully without compromising my XREAS;

I have an 08' V8 with 101,000 miles. No leaks in XREAS. I have seriously thought about going 5100 or the 6112 Bilstein route, but really, after labor day driving a super curvy road at 55 mph with a full load of gear, man the truck cornered flat and oh-so controlled. I feel i'd be stupid to change.

BUT I WANT some lift and leveling - not a lot. HERE IS THE QUESTION: If I do the daystar wheeler kit in front, could i do the 1.5" lift (Wheeler T12/Eibach/sway a way) springs in back instead of the Dastar pucks and not trash the XREAS by over extending the rear XREAS shocks? Wheeler's did not know. I like the idea of more travel in back with a better than stock spring rate as I pull a trailer with some tong weight.

Any thoughts?

lastly, I do have some FJ springs in near new shape also sitting in a box, but now i'm perplexed if I should add them to the mix.

Thank you!

When I did my XREAS research all I could find is a few people saying 1 inch is max for the shock. Had something to do with the piston in the shock being able to shift the correct amount of fluid during flex, or some thing like that. I took out my XREAS shocks because they handled like a tuna barge, one side was leaking, I went with the 5100's. The front shouldn't matter if you go with a top spacer.

I would think the Wheeler T12 springs or the OME 2895e's would be a good choice if keeping the XREAS. Once you remove one, they all have to come out.

Replacing XREAS

So I'm finally looking to replace all of the XREAS/RAS on the truck, but I'm having trouble figuring out what I should get. I currently have the 2.5 daystar in the front with an adjusted RAS in the back, and it sits level. I want to be able to stay completely level and get 3/2 lift with OME.

885/895 combo coils? Do i need springs as well? If so, what springs are recommended?

New suspension installed. Bilstein 5100s, OME 885/895. A little more height than I expected, especially in the front, which ended up netting 4" from previous sagging stance. Probably should have gone with 884's but guy at wheelers talked me into 885s... theyre on for the time being.

anyways, definitely stiffer, which is fine, and rides much better than before, especially off road, but at any sort of speed over 50, there is quite a bit of sway, and seems to also have a slight vibration of sorts that wasnt present before hand. Nothing seems to be rubbing when I check around, but not sure what else would be causing that.

Any thoughts? Also, im sure its mentioned countless times around here, but is there a general idea of how much everything will settle, and how long that usually takes?

Bilstein 5100's

I installed all 4 Bilstein 5100's with front set at max height and no rear spacer, with stock springs on my 2004 V8 SR5. I also installed Toyo Rough Country At 2's 265/70/17. I noticed that my front tires run on my upper control arm when turning all the way. Any suggestions on spacers or different springs?

I think

I have OME springs (2895) with the 5100, they ride great.

he was talking about front set up. Sure it will if your carrying the constant extra 100 to 200 lbs needed for the 895s. But if not it would ride even better with the OEM equivalent rear shock....

ARK_SWAMP_RIDER In case you wish to add this info to front page.

I decided to take a chance since no one that had done this WOULDN'T answer me, or find anything on a search here or anywhere. So if anyone does a search this might come up for them.

08 runner, V6, full skids, roof rack, F&R bumpers (SW heavy) w/ winch. No Diff drop.
Had 885's w/5100, no SB, FJ overland DR coils. So pretty much a 3/3 lift. (2 5/8") front to my best guess.
Felt still to soft for me, lean on turns, and nose dive on braking. Didn't want to go to coilovers. Like the OME setup.

I took a chance and went to 886 coils, yes left the 5100s in for the moment.
Big difference since I know I have 200lb + on the front. Took a lot of the turn lean out along with braking nose dive.
My main concern was, no CV bind at full wheel drop. Happy camper.
Plus since I had a factory rake like it had, changed to close a level ride. I'd say 3.5" +/- lift from it.

Yes, a little stiff some would say, but, a truck feel to it. If towing or loaded down with full camping gear or what ever, rides like a Cadillac to me.

Hope this helps others if there interested.

Question for yall. I am looking at upgrading so when I decide to do front and rear bumper I won't have any issues. I want to be at 3in lift with no rake. I do some moderate wheeling with some rock crawling but nothing to insane since I am in virginia. What options do i have that won't break the bank?

Moog 81081 Rear Coil Alternatives

I know this has been hashed, and rehashed, but I can't see a consensus forming, so I'd like some help tackling this head on.

For every positive comment I see about Moog FJ coils for the front, I see a negative comment about the Moog FJ coils for the rear. Either fit or feel is off for almost every post I see.

Is there an alternative to the Moog FJ rear coils that people go to as a second choice? I'm not a serious off-roader, just a gravel or dirt road on the weekends. But I love hearing people talking about the flatter turns, less bounce, etc. Or am I way off on people saying the Moog's don't fit on the rear axle?

This is spot on. I was eager to buy suspension stuff and level my 04 Limited a few months ago, so I hurriedly bought 884s and 5100s (rear is still the stock airbags). I wish I had done a bit more research! Knowing what I do now, I would've gone with the Toytec/Eibach front springs. Hopefully I'll get those soon and swap two Superflex coils in and ditch the RAS soon. Good luck to all of you considering suspension upgrades!
