4th Gen Suspension Options/FAQ

Will 2018 trd Tacoma shocks front and rear fit my 05 4runner sr5 4wd? Any reason to get bilstein 5100 over these if they do fit?

I just installed 225/75/17 Goodyear Duratracs with a 2" front and rear lift. One thing to keep in mind is, these older trucks most likely have sagging stock springs. A 2" lift looks like a lot more than that when done. BTW, I do get a little rubbing on the front mud flaps and fender liners.

This was right after the tire/wheel install

Setup looks good!

If I may, I'd like to offer a solution to your rubbing issues. As I have 285/70-r17 MT's on my 4th gen with 3" of "lift," I've had rubbing issues for months and finally don't have that issue anymore. First, I took the mud flaps out from both the front and the rear. I also, cut so much plastic in the front wheel well with a razor blade. However, the best upgrade to my rubbing issue was the body mount chop. The trails I ride have a good bit of drops and dips, so pushing the tires inward constantly. The BMC has eliminated that issue entirely.

Hey guys hoping to get some input on my cobbled together suspension lift/replacement. I have an 06 Sport Edition with XREAS and the current system is leaking and now completely useless so I’m replacing it with 5100s at all four cornered. I have almost 150k on my T4R so I figured I’d replace the springs as well. I’ve been scouring this and other forums for months now trying to figure out what I wanted to do that would fit my budget so after the 5100s I ended up with new Moog front T4R springs for the front and new Moog FJ rear springs. I don’t intend to install any lift spacers and my current tires are BFG Rugged Terrain T/A 265 70/17s. I think that covers all the background so my question is; for a level ride what setting should I have the 5100s at in the front? I have yet to find someone with this exact combo of stuff I have so going with the info I’ve found on here so far it looks like the rear should gain about an inch or so from the FJ springs so to level the truck I should set at 1.75 or 2.5 I think. I really don’t want it raked to the rear so I’m hesitant to go with the 2.5 unless there is a consensus that would result in a level vehicle. Knowledge is appreciated and opinions are welcome. Thanx folks!

You can do more then 3" of lift. Just make sure you use a spring. Here is a pic of my CV's. I have the usual diff. drop. Toytec 2.5 springs and a 3/4 spacer (1.5 of spacer lift), so around 4" of lift. Also note my UCA are fairly straight.
I had FJ springs and a 2" lift spacer before and everything was more drooped. I tried a 2.5" lift spacer before that but it was real bad and my CV would click at full lock. About to change to a heavier taller OME spring tomorrow and use a 1/2" spacer which should have me at a solid 4" of lift.

Hello,

Brand new member here. I have a 2006 4runner with 120k that is completely stock. I figured it's time to upgrade the suspension. My original plan was to get 5100's all around but I ended up with 4600's.....Long story.... but I have no way of returning them. So my question is what are my spring options for this shock? Can I get away with a taller spring than the oem ones or is that frowned upon? I can't seem to find any instances of folks putting taller springs on stock height shocks. Is that frowned upon? I'm just looking for 1-1.5 in front and 0.5-1 inch rear. I was thinking of MOOG FJ's but am open to any suggestions you guys might have. Any info is greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

You might have already found the answer you're looking for but you can put FJ springs with those 4600. You'll be fine. I recommend the OEM FJ coils as there would be some adjustment and the rears don't sit quite right. Depending on where you are I do have an extra set of FJ OEM Coils that was used on pavement only for sale if interested.

That's the rear setup I went with. No fitment issues and both the ride and handling have been great on- and off-road. See the link in my sig for details.

hummm. When I obsessively read through the WHOLE FJ suspension swap I recall some people ....... NEVER MIND, it wasn't the Moog coils it was another brand and either it was a fit issue or installer issue I can't recall exactly.

Ignore my last post, I just talked out of my ass :-)

Where you had to cut a little off the bottom to get them to sit right, correct? I read that too and made sure the 2007 OEM FJ springs I was looking at weren't the ones with the issue, and they weren't. Fit was perfect. Here's a pic of my old springs before removal. The end of the spring fits up against the stop, so it's easy to understand why there's an issue if the coil is a little too long.

These are the old and new (to me) springs (and one of the 4600s waiting its turn for installation).

It's not visible here but the bottom end of the FJ coil fit right against the stop exactly like the stock 4R coils did.

okay, new Member, New 4runner owner. and there are over 100+ pages to this.. I don't have that kind of patience.

I have an '04 Sport 4x4 with XREAS, I want to just slightly lift it to put a little bigger tire on it. so just a 1"-2" front spacer/Leveling lift.

do they all require you to disassemble the front shocks? or can you just mount them on top of the shocks? I've looked a few different spacers and now I'm confused where the kits go haha.

We used to have a Nissan Titan and we had a 3" leveling kit on the front of it, literally just unbolt the top of the struts, drop the suspension, mount the spacer then raise the suspension back up, good to go!

That Simple on these things? Thanks in advance

3 bolts on top of each side...easy to lift with spacer, you leave the coil on the shock. Spacer sits on top of the top hat.

A second thought... The bolts are not long, if you needed longer bolts you will have to pull it apart. Depending on how the spacer is made, to fit with the stock bolt length... probably only get a 1/4" in there.

The “X-REAS Delete...” post linked in my sig may be helpful. Result seems close or equivalent to what you’re looking for and if your X-REAS isn’t shot now, that clock is probably ticking fast.

Currently have 100K on the 4R, and none of the shocks are leaking so for the time being I'll stick with XREAS. but thank you, I'll keep that in mind for the future

Awesome, I'll definitely contact you once I'm ready to do the lift, probably would just do the 1" Leveling kit, Do your spacers come with Studs? like the other member "Backoff" said, I can only get 1/4" spacer with standard studs safely..

Sure, whatever works best for you. I will say though that a number of us with X-REAS thought no leakage indicated the system was still good only to learn there’s more to it than that. Not trying to talk you into anything, just saying you’ll probably be pleasantly surprised at the improvement once you change it out.

19 TRD shocks on 05

So I have a guy locally here in Colorado selling his 19 TRD suspension. I know I've seen there needs to be some modifications done to fit the gas struts but I don't want those. I'm gonna order 5100s. I do want to buy his springs cause my 05 has 215k. The springs won't require any modifications to fit correct?

He also has the stock UCAs. Are these worth putting in my old 05?

Wanting to do like a lot of the FJ lifts I've been looking into. Set fronts 1.75 or maybe 2.5 depending on lift from the front springs. Have some 1.5 rear spacers I'll throw on. Want to get 255/80 for 33s but may go 275/70. Anyone know or guess the lift from 5th gen brand new trd springs? Any input helps. Stoked to get the build going. Thanks guys

What's are the advantages of going with lifted coils over the spacers for the rear end? I do some amateur off road once a week or so.

Stock coils sag quite a bit with added weight. They are also very soft and some people prefer the stiffness that a lift coils adds. Plus cool factor as well. Generally spacers are thought of as more of a visual upgrade and less so of a performance one
