4th Gen Suspension Options/FAQ

Hello everyone, I've been looking at the forums for about a month now to help me with shock replacement and I have a very strange issue. I have a 2007 Sport. It had stock XREAS setup for 113k and I decided to get rid of XREAS and go with Bilstein 5100 front and rear with stock springs. I change the rear first and everything went quick and smoothly. For the front I took the stock strut and the new Bilsteins to a shop to have the springs swapped. I didn't feel comfortable compressing the springs myself. I got the springs changed out and I then reassembled everything in the front and I tightened all the bolts while it was in the air without any weight on it. I noticed the front was very high compared to the rear. I double checked everything and didn't see anything out of place and thought it will be fixed after it settles overnight and while I drive it to the dealership for an alignment the next day. Well I get to the dealership and nothing had settled and they took a look and told me the shocks that I used are too long.

This is what I ordered and put on the front at .85 which is the second notch from bottom. After reading what everyone had done I decided .85 was a good setting.

Amazon.com: Bilstein (24-186711) 5100 Series Front Shock Absorber: Automotive

The rear shocks are

Bilstein 33-187174 2" Lift Rear Shock for Toyota FJ Cruiser : Amazon.com : Automotive

I then I saw some threads say that the bolts can't be tightened unless its on the ground with full weight. So I raised the front. I loosened all the associated bolts. The only bolt I didn't touch was the middle bolt on the strut. I'm not sure if that will help or safe to loosen. I drove around the block very slowly to let it "settle" and I didn't see a single difference. So now I'm not sure what could be wrong.

Here are a couple of shots of what it looks like.

Hey man, welcome to t4r.

The images don't work.

I'm a little confused as to what your issue is. The billies can be used at stock height with no issues. You do realize that the rear shocks will NOT give you ANY lift without lift springs, yes? The front at .85 Should leave you with a slight rake.

Hi and thanks,

The issue is that the front is too high even after all of the things I've tried.

Here is a direct link to the images, I can't seem to make the built in uploader work.

How about some pics of the spring perch on the bottom? Willing to bet it's upside down.

Ah, ETA - saw your pics. That's the issue. take it back to the shop and scream at them. The perch is 100% upside down.

proper spring perches:

ignore the garbag coilover upside down hanging by an xreas line)

You're the man.

Will definitely take it back tomorrow morning. You'd think a shop with excellent ratings would not mess something up like this.

Thanks for all your help!

Any time, like I said, welcome to the forum!

Where are you in VA? Scott@Hightech (high tech auto) is a forum sponsor in Nova and they would probably take better care of your truck :thumb3:

I would recommend getting the full set of Total Chaos gussets (Coil buckets, spindles, cam tabs). You can get by without the upper and panhard links for now, but I'd recommend to replace the lowers. Don't forget about rear shocks with reservoirs. You don't want the front to outperform the rear.

I took your advice on the gussets and just ordered them and am having them installed once the shocks get built. I figure the hydro bumps can wait a while. I plan on going with the Fox 2" ones. Thanks for planting seeds and spending money for me!!

Now my order consists of:
-KING Front 2.5" Coilovers with Reservoirs and Adjusters
-KING Rear 2.5" Shocks with Reservoirs and Adjusters
-Radflo Rear 2" Lift Coil Springs
-Total Chaos Upper Control Arms
-Total Chaos LCA Cam Tab Gussets
-Total Chaos Spindle Gussets
-Total Chaos Upper Coil Bucket Tower Gussets

Anyone know of any good options for about a 2/1 inch lift on a 4x4 v8 that will be used on road trips, some daily driving and desert offroading (no rock crawling sort of stuff)? I'm reluctant to go for the 3/2 inch lift and 285 tires that so many people seem to do because I'm a bit scared off from the mpg hit and potential alignment problems. I've got some 5100 shocks ready to be installed to replace my leaking xreas, but the coil options all seem to be either higher than I want or the fj coils which might not be enough.

Ideas? I'm new to this, so feel free to set me straight if I'm missing something obvious.

I know the thread says that 255/75/17 will require a 1" lift in the front. Just wondering if anyone has squeezed these on with out a oft installed, and if there are any problems? Have a set for sale I may be purchasing, want to know if the will work out.

many people ran the 255-75-17 GY Silent Armour's on stock suspension. The narrow size helps.
