4th Gen Suspension Options/FAQ

Sounds like you are going to be building your rig in stages adding additional weight along the way. An adjustable setup may be your best bet (Like Toytec Ultimate or Boss) so that can crank it up as you add more weight. JMO.

quick question. So I did a bilsteinx4, OME 885 superflex rear lift. Got me about 3/2 lift and visually level. The front and back seem level but it definitely has drivers side lean. I would like to put the 1.5 rear spacer on the rear drivers side as I've seen mention but won't this leave a lot of rake (nose down)? what is a good way to raise the front just a tad if I do this set-up?

Hi all,
I am a newbie here as well as to my new to me 2005 4Runner SR5 V6 4.0
I would like to do a very economical 3" lift maintaining close to stock or slightly stiffer suspension feel. At the moment it feels kind of rocky but I feel that might be due to worn shocks or maybe even springs.
I am seeing quite a number of economical 3" front 2" rear kits on ebay but don't know about their quality. I also see the economical Daystar Kits for around the same price but they don't come with the additional sway bar drop, skid plate drop and differential drop kits as the others do. I don't know if they are necessary either.
My question to the forum is which kit should I buy and from where?
In addition, would lifting the rear using 2" spacers require longer rear shocks? If so which shock should I buy and from where?
What are recommended front and rear shocks to be used?
What are recommended springs to be used should they need to be replaced?
Am I going to need to do any further modifications to accommodate the lift kit and possible 32" tires?

I am trying to achieve a 3" lift without running into trouble. More for looks, backroads and mild trails as it is a daily driver. This is for a 2005 T4R SR5 V6. After reading all 90 pages in this thread I think the prefered choice are Bilstein 5100s all around, OME 884 front springs, 1/4" spacer, Toytec superflex rear springs and Spidertrax 1.25" spacers using stock 17" rims.
I would appreciate comments on this setup or correct me if I am wrong and you think I should change to something else. Also your thoughts as to where to source these items at the best prices.

How did your install go? I am looking to do the same setup this week and was wondering how the tires fit and how you like them?

Post some pictures!

Sorry for the delay (and as your signature implies agreement?) the setup is an incredible improvement from 120k mile tired X-REAS!!! In my mind it hits the sweet spot of maximizing the most performance in suspension upgrade at a great price. They did have an issue with the braided brake lines from Toytec. Fitting wouldn't fully seat, causing a leak. Still need to call them... GRR!

The Limited body roll at highway speed/high g side loading is next to NILL due to the polyurethane bushings throughout. I would say the tires do slip just a minor BIT more than stock OEM new Michelins while pushing it around wet corners... But very predictable with or without TC.

As for rubbing, I do have a bit that I need to trim. Only at full lock and large suspension travel actuation does it rub. Honestly it's a non issue pounding city/highway pavement. Would trimming the lower edge of the fender prevent rubbing at max actuation?

FYI, the jury is still out as to if the NEW BFG 275/70-17 fits the spare wheel well. I'll check this weekend... I predict this tire size will take between 10k-15k miles off a (32.2"?) DIA tire to fit at 40 psi.

Funny thing to note. If you drive off too far (25 miles?) the tire pressure dash light starts blinking until you get back within range of the actual spare...

I give this setup a 10 / 10! So happy I did it and get to drive this awesome truck another 100k miles!

Sorry if this is a dumb question. Recently bought a 2005 sr5 with 275/45r20 wheels and some measure of lift (differs front and back)..how can I verify the lift front & back? Where would I measure from to determine where I am at? Thanks

Best spot is center of wheel/hub to fender. Should be approx 19" front and 21" rear for a stock 4runner.

Geez, so much data to absorb. I just bought an '08 SR5 4WD w/ 88k on the clock and the front bottoms out over speed bumps (yes, I drive slow over them). So, if I'm going to replace the shocks I may as well lift it right? Sounds good, now I just need to convince the wife.
Thinking about 5100's and a 1.5" spacer/levelling kit. I have OME's on my wife's TJ with a 2" spacer kit and bumpstop extensions and it works well enough for the light off-roading we do in it.

Hi all, i am new in this forum. My name is Peter, live in Chile and just bought a 4R 2008 which i plan to use for day to day and offroad trips, desert mainly including Chilean atacama desert 2-3 times a year. Have looked at some alternatives to improve suspension but have not decided. Jeep is standard. Requirements:
-improve tire size, width important over height, 275/70/r16 seems option
-strengthen suspension specially front
-improve wheel travel
-keep looks as standard as possible ie no body cuts

Going through this thread lift of 2/1 seems to be the right choice. 285/70/r16 or r17 possible? Need to replace UCAs?

Many thanks in advance for the guidance!!

Looking for some confirmation, trying to search but wanted to be very sure on this point and get a direct and specific answer...I am going with a Daystar 2.5/1.5 lift...

I want a more aggressive stance and want to add spidertrax spacers to widen the wheels on stock 16" rims (maybe 17"s)...

what is the largest tire size I can run with the spidertrax and not need to trim?

would 275/70/16 or 265/70/17 be ok and not require any trimming? if you can please respond with confirmation specifically being sure that you are considering the 1.25" spidertrax wheel spacers it would really put my mind at ease...thanks

or if I have missed a link or post please re-direct me, I am really having a hard time specifically finding tire sizes with spidertrax that will not require trimming.

2K1,
This is in the first post of this thread:

Front/Rear Lift Tire Size
Stock -
265/65R17
265/70R17* (except BFG A/T)

1/0
265/70R17* (31.6x10.4)
255/75R17 (32 x 10)

2/1
265/70R17
255/75R17

3/2
275/70R17 (32.2 x 10.8)
285/70R17† (32.6 x 11.2)
255/80R17* (33 x 10)

3/2 + 1-1.5" Body Lift
255/85R17† (34 x 10)
285/70R17†
305/65R17† (32.6 x 12)

* requires removal of mud flaps and probably minor trimming
† requires trimming and may require body mount chop (click here for details on body mount chop), upper control arms, and/or increased backspacing.

Add 5 to the middle number for 16" wheels, subtract 5 for 18" wheels (265/75R16=265/70R17=265/65R18)

The above assumes you're using stock wheels and no wheel spacers. Aftermarket wheels or wheel spacers will increase rubbing, more trimming will need to be done in order to fit the listed size.

AZ I read that which is why I specifically would like some info on how the 1.25" spidertrax wheel spacers will affect the fitment...as stated in what you quoted me which I read and understand, it says wheel Spacers can affect fitment so I am asking for fitment on a specific lift and tire size to see if members have insight on if I can run spidertrax wheel spacers with those sizes and avoid any trimming.

New SR5 V8

Hello everyone! My name is Rex. I'm currently living in the St. Louis Metro area. I have recently purchased a 4th Gen T4R. I got a 17ft aluminum boat recently and the 2012 Civic Si wasn't quite cutting it for towing.

I'll be posting a Noob Message on the general thread as I have a few CEL and other questions not related to this thread.

The 4Runner currently has 265/70/17r tires on 17 (stock alloys?).

I will preface the following with this: I have now spent one full week reading, learning, doing my own research and got to my proverbial brick wall and just wanted to reach out to the community. I have a bit of extra money and want to turn this (somewhat) older diamond in the rough into a good DD that has an edge to it. I love toyota's and 4runner's in general. This is my second!

I have read and come to the conclusion that i definitely want to do a suspension upgrade and lift. As I only have the 2wd I'm thinking a set with the bilstin 5100's would be ideal as I will be DD and towing and the adjust ability is a great feature. I am most interested in the Toytec lifts from what I have seen. The full $1200 setup seems less desireable than this C/O front with new springs and 5100's all around.

3" Lift W/ Bilstein 5100 Height Adj Coilovers FJ/4Runner

I have found one guy/girl on there that has this setup and it looks great and is quite affordable without the diff drop (865 give or take) on the toytec website. Anyone else have this and like it?

2 questions.

1. I'm wanting to run 275 or 285 / 70 / 17R's on http://www.toyota-4runner.org/4th-g...unner-fj-7-spoke-17in-wheels.html#post1716563

the TRD Pro 2014-15 4R wheels. Would the lift provided by the toytec I'm looking at give enough clearance for the 285's?

If not, would i just need to get spacers to provide a bit more clearance on top (is that possible with the C/o linked above?). I'm in need of assistance with the spacer route-as that is completely foreign to me. (i've provided pictures of what it is looking like today).

2. I'm interested in the BFG k02's or the GY Duratacs...or even micky's if anyone has suggestions there..I'm open. There is a place doing b3g1 free and i could get the terra grappler g2. Just give me your opinion on tire size and brand.

Thanks again and I hope to learn from the forum and eventually contribute!

Oh last question--someone mentioned yotatech lift discounts through the forum. I looked and all i saw was a direct link to the same Yotatech site google takes me to when i looked under the vendors thread.

Got my billy 5100s, my 885 front, and Superflex rear. Anything else I should pick up before doing the lift while everything is apart? Runner has 90k miles on it now. Brake system looks good. Swaybar bushings? Extended front/rear swaybar links? I want to have as many ducks in a row before I start tearing things apart. No point in doing it twice.
