4th Gen Suspension Options/FAQ

Daily driver that i can take exploring on outland adventures around our lake and into the rockies. Nothing to crazy. I would like to get max lift for best bang for buck with out going over the 3' diff drop and driveline issues that occur. I was thinking to utilize the tacoma shocks i already have and keeping air bags in tact for towing small holiday trailer and guad trailer. Xreas is leaking so its going for sure. If i need to remove air bags then i will do that but for now i was trying to utilize tacoma parts for front and just replace rear shocks to accomplish a leveling out ? Its a 2003 v-8 runner limited.

If you're doing somewhat heavy off roading, I would say just ditch the air bags. Especially in your area, they seem to be prone to failure. I'd much rather swap them out now than to have issues with them on the trails.

I've swapped mine stock airbags out, but have since went back since I'm spending almost all my time on the road. I have mine adjusted to lift the rear ~2", which is ok for on road use but hurts performance for sure.

I would definitely plan on using the front shocks/coils. Depending on what you do with the rear, I would add a front spacer.

so is it possible to bring up the rear level with air bags if i install the tacoma shocks and springs with the 2.5 spacer on it ? Also installing stock length rear shocks ? or would it be better to go 1' bigger rear shocks ?

Nope, none at all. You do need to be aware though, the Tacoma coils will lift 1"+ in the front, so I wouldn't suggest adding the Daystar 2.5" spacer. Do you have a v6 or v8? Is yours a 4x4?

I would agree with Ark on the daystar unless it is a v8. On a v6 daystar and longer coils will make your truck hard to align. Since a v8 is heavier that will make the car be within spec to align with out any need for control arms while using daystar 2.5/1.5 that's what I am doing.

Possible, yes but I would not suggest it. I would not use the Daystar 2.5" spacer with the Tacoma setup.

My suggestion would be a 1" lift spacer (combined with the Tacoma setup should net you 2"-2.5" lift) in the front and adjust the rear to level. Going any higher will cause the rear to be pretty rough and hurt your flex off road. Stock length shocks should be used on the rear if you are wheeling pretty hard.

I'm currently running more lift that than in the rear and I would not suggest it. If you want more lift than what I've listed above, swap the rear air bags out.

One final option is to get a spacer made for the rear air bags. I've heard Will at Sierra Expeditions was planning on making one, but never heard if he did. If you were able to use a spacer on the rear, you could go higher.

How do you figure tacoma springs will raise it 1". Are you saying factory tacoma springs and shocks are 1' larger then factory runner springs and shocks ?

it would be nice if someone can put together information for correct backspacing/offset for aftermarket wheels to go along with tire size.

im trying to figure out what wheels to get , but i dont want to run wheel spacers and want to make sure i clear the uca . i know i will need to do the appropriate trimming etc.

Thank you very much for this info. Do you think i can lift the rear with air bags enough to still level it out if install these taco springs/struts with the leveling pucks on ? Or will it be to much ?

Tacoma coils + the Daystar 2.5 will end up with 3.5"-4" lift in the front. First off, I wouldn't go that high on the front, you'll run into other issues. Second, I wouldn't suggest adjusting the rear air bags that much. It's possible, but I wouldn't do it. Mine are adjusted at 2" and it gets pretty rough, you'd need that much or more (plus longer rear shocks).

Dude your knowledge and help is awesome thanks a bunch.
Last and final question. What if i re use my 4 runner springs,On tacoma shocks with the daystar leveling kit ?

And still install factory length rear shocks in the back.
Or i ,might just buy a proper 3' lift and replace all 4 corners with new shocks and springs but still keep the air bags.

There are no rear springs. You've got 3 options for lifting the rear.
1) Add air pressure to the bags - performance/ride quality suffers
2) Add spacer to air bags - often discussed, but I haven't seen it actually done
3) Swap the air bags out for coil springs.

I wouldn't use the 4runner springs and Tacoma shocks. The shocks are setup to work with the heavier coil, the valving would definitely be off.

It seems you want 3" or more lift in the front and a level rear. There are ways you can do this with the air bags but I wouldn't recommend it. Again, I have mine adjusted at 2" lift and while it works and I can deal with the ride, I wouldn't suggest going that route unless you have no other options.

My suggestion (assuming you want to keep the air bags): Install the Tacoma shocks/coils on the front. Add the Daystar Budget Boost spacer. This will give you 2"+ lift in the front. Adjust the rear up to level it out. If you want more lift, consider a small body lift until you are ready to swap the bags.

Tire size

Cant really speak to after market but I can tell you I'm running 265/70/17 and while I have no rubbing the space between the UCA and the tire is paper thin

Will ome 885 with 5100 be to stiff on a stock 06 4x4 v6 tr4? If so what would be a better coil with the 5100 to get at least 3" of lift. 5100 already mounted with the stock coils set at 2.5. I couldn't find fj coils anywhere. I would like it to be a little stiffer then what the stock coils provide. Also want to avoid spacer unless no choice to get 3" lift.

I'd do FJ coils personally. Post a WTB on this site for coils and you should be able to find some.

Any coils from a 4wd FJ will work, year doesn't matter. If you still have no luck, look into Moog aftermarket FJ coils. That'll push you up to 3" or slightly over. You can do OME's, but unless you are adding weight to the front, I prefer the FJ setup. I've ran both and the FJ setup offered a much better ride IMO.

What setting do you set the 5100 at to get 3" with the moog coils

Has anybody had any issues with the fit of the OME coils on the 5100s. Called ARB today and they said they aren't designed to fit with the 5100 adjustable shocks. Isn't a coil just a coil as far as they way they should fit in the buckets.

I put OME springs on my 5100's a few weeks ago with no issue. Rides great.
