4th Gen Suspension Options/FAQ

but wont i need to replace the shock anyway because i have the XREAS? and i will be putting new aftermarket coilovers on the front

nah you have the option of replacing all xreas or non of xreas (though in theory i guess you could replace the crosslinked shocks without issue) but you can't do just the front shocks

King 2" Extended Travel Coilovers + Other Parts?

I am about to purchase a 4WD 2003-2006 4Runner and live near the SOCAL deserts. My goals are a suspension that can do mild pre-running, moderate crawling and be a decent daily driver.

After doing a lot of research the past few days I decided to pay Downsouth Motorsports a visit today and spoke with Neil. I also talked on the phone with Nicole at Total Chaos today.

After leaving Downsouth Motorsports I understood the following parts would achieve my goal and costing around $3600 for everything minus installation:
  1. King OEM Performance Series Coilovers w/adjusters (front & rear)
  2. Desert Products UCA
  3. 2" Icon Rear Lift

A couple of questions:
  • Do I need UCA's for the rear?
  • Do I need a lift or do the coilovers provide the lift?
  • Do I need LCA's to make this work?

Total Chaos sent an email with the UCA's and a bunch of other accessories like spindle gussets with sway bar mounts, complete link kit, secondary shock loop long travel, stock length uniball LCA's and some suspension skid plate items. This ends up costing around $4600 "without" coilovers. I'm not really looking to spend $10K on my suspension.

Bottom Line: Will the suggestions from Downsouth work together and be a decent setup?

Thanks folks!! Rick

Yes. It will be an awesome setup. Neil is great to deal with. I run extended travel Fox's modified by Fox based on what DownSouth recommended. Fully adjustable and the a Desert UCA's you are looking at. I do need to change out my rear springs based in what they reco'd to me. You will be quite happy with the Kings.

Adjust the fronts to 3" and call it a day.

I would recommend getting the full set of Total Chaos gussets (Coil buckets, spindles, cam tabs). You can get by without the upper and panhard links for now, but I'd recommend to replace the lowers. Don't forget about rear shocks with reservoirs. You don't want the front to outperform the rear.

Thanks for the response and the tip on adjusting the fronts to 3".

I just received an email from TC saying the minimum they would recommend are COs, UCAs and the swindle gusset with sway bar mounts. They said I could add other parts later. I need to "ease it in gently" with the wife with regards to cost.

My shock/spring plans are the King 2.5” front coil over & rear smooth body 2.5” shocks with compression adjustment with external reservoirs. I also plan to install the Icon 2" rear lift springs.

Are the UCAs front only, or front and rear?

TC knows what they're talking about. You seem to know what you're doing so I'm sure you don't need much help. If you really want to go fast though, you'll want to change your bump stops. Wheelers Superbumps are a nice cheap option for the front. Rear options I'm afraid are going to cost a bit more.

Front and rear control arms are completely different. Front UCA's are required if you want extended travel coilovers. Rear lower arms are very prone to bending/breaking.

First Post and first MOD.

I was getting a ton of rub on my front wheel wells whenever I cranked the wheel hard or backed out of the driveway. In addition to the rub I was showing increased wear on the inside edge of both front tires. I have 127k on this 2006 Limited V8 AWD Stock 18" rims with Hankook DynaPro ATM 265/60's on em. It seemed like a good time to go through and upgrade my suspension.

I went with Bilstein 5100's all the way around. I set the billies at 1.75" and continued to use my original springs. After the install I am getting a higher nose than rear (at least by appearances) and this is with less than a quarter of a tank of gas in it. My passenger side has more clearance in the front as well. Will this difference in height settle out for my passenger side? Also, what is the expected drop I should see after the suspension settles. This high nose "appearance" is enhanced due to my running boards sweeping upwards. From back 12.5" from ground to bottom of running board to 13.5" in the front.

I had a hell of a time getting these puppies into their places in the lower control arm. Will I see increased wear at all of my joints and CV axle? If so, am I better off dropping down to the 0.85" setting?

Wheel Well Measurements. (Measurements to fender from center of Hub.)

Drivers side: 35" Passenger 35 5/16-3/8". Rears are both at 35 5/8".

Will the Superior RideEffex part# 18-1901 work to correct the driver lean?

Happy New Year's folks!

I am installing my 3/2 King Coilovers and Total Chaos UCA's next week. With the UCA's will 285/70-17's work without any trimming necessary? I'm not opposed to trimming but plan on some semi spirited desert runs.

I don't think it will, you'd need to measure the diameter of the rear coils to see. I don't have a set to measure.

You will also need wheel spacers if you are running stock wheels. You will definitely need trimming as well (as described in the first post).

A little advice wanted. I have not gone through the posts here.

I plan on getting a steel front bumper, weighing in at a 100 pds or less. I would like to go with bilstein 5100 all the way around. I'm wondering what springs I should go with to prevent sagging in the front and maintain a nice ride quality. Should i go with something more heavy duty then the FJ springs?
what would you guys recommend, any help appreciated, thanks.

First piece of advice is go through the posts....

OME 885's or 886's are popular with a bumper. I would probably go stiffer than FJ's.

Just picked up a Rough Country 3" lift for $75.00. The lift came off a 2012 FJ Cruiser. Guy I bought it from even threw in a set a rear 5100 that came off his truck. Anyone know of a Rough County lift being used on a 4th gen? It's a front spacer/rear spring lift. I'm pretty sure I'll to mod my rear shock mount to run the 5100's since they came off a 2012 FJ. Anybody know if I'll have issue with the FJ spacer lift on the my stock coilovers? Or should I look to upgrade the front end with a set of FJ struts at the same time.

Anybody got some FJ struts they want to part with? :naughty:

Sequoia Rear Coils?

Sequoia rear coils--Searched a little, but struck out. Anyone tried them? Do they even fit? Just wondering...
