4th Gen Suspension Options/FAQ

FJ Coils

New the OME 895's are $168 or thereabouts - some places have free shipping. If you are in Phoenix, check out SierraExpeditions. No affiliation, I used to wheel with the guy who runs it and he has good prices.

Thanks guys! They don't have to be OME but I am having a difficult time finding stock coils online in my area that are worth purchasing. I found some decently priced FJ coils online just by searching. What are your thoughts on the Moog coil springs? I have read that they do not fit sometimes. But any suggestions are welcome for FJ coil springs I just need to make sure they will work on my 03. The moogs I found were between 50-70$ and I am not planning on doing heavy offroading since I have a 2wd so I am mainly doing fj coils for a little added lift and nicer ride than stock.

Xreas questions

I'm planning on removing my xreas system from my 04 Sport Edition v6 2wd. Is the process simple, as in a pull out the old and plug in new? Is there any associated hardware I will need to purchase get it done? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

It's very simple, but you have to do all 4 shocks at once when losing the XREAS because they are connected with a hydraulic house, a brake line really. I just cut mine off after unbolting the shocks since it was junk at that point.

I've got some stock OEM coils I pulled off my 04 V8 with about 110,000. I'm asking $40 for all 4 if interested. I didn't read entire thread so if this way off base I apologize.

My take on the compatibility issue is

Thanks techno, thankfully I had a plan B as well. I found some brand new FJ Cruiser - Old Man Emu OME 895 Coil Rear Springs on craigslist that say they provide a 2in rear lift, which I believe other drivers have used along with the bilstein 5100 in this forum. Is that safe to say you can pair these 2 together? The seller wants 200$ for the rear pair, is that a good deal?

that the 5100s are under dampened for the spring rate of the 895s. Maybe this changes over time..and i hope it does b/c the 5100/895 ride could be better. I've read that the OE 5th gen rear coils result in 1.5 to 2.0" rear lift and the rides better..

Can you tell suspension options by Vin?

Looking into buying a nice 2003 V8 Limited but the current owner is clueless as to what type of rear suspension it has. I don't want to drive all the way out there to realize it has RAS... does anyone know if there's anyway to look up the vehicle by Vin # to see what factory suspension it came with? Already checked CarFax with no dice!

Setup

I have an 08 sr5 and am thinking of going with bilstein 5100s all around, and 895E rear coils. I am looking for about 2.5 lift in the front and 1.5 in the back. Would this setup work with what I want? Maybe different coils for ride feel. I think that 2 inches in the back might be too high of a lift in terms of looks. Also is running 275s the biggest tire I can run without the trimming at that height? There is soooo much info to search through, I've been at this for days.

Someone slap me if this has been asked but we are pushing 90 pages now on this thread!

With a 3/2 lift with stock bumpers and UCAs, how will a 33x10.5r17 ko2 fit? I plan on having to do minor trimming.

Any input will be greatly appreciated.

With minor trimming you'll be good.

Thanks. That's what I suspected. The 255/80r17 can only be found with the MTs. The 33x10.5 is much more common.

Front strut nut and broke post

Was installing a spacer lift, cornfed, and while disassembling the coil from shock I twisted the end of the shock post off that sticks up cause the nut is seized on there so tight. Nut is still on, not sure what to try to get that off. Any thoughts?
If I end up replacing the shocks, which I didn't want to do, can I just throw bilstein in there set at 0, and put my spacer in there as planned, a 2"? Or do I forego the spacer and set the 5100s at a different setting? Will the 5100s work with stock springs?
Is there a less expensive alternative?

Appreciate the thoughts.

If you twisted the end of the shock off, the center bolt up top there, then it's done. If you go Bilsteins you can use stock springs, I did for a year without issue. Also, if you get Billy's return or sell the spacer. It shoves the shock down which can cause the shock to bottom out and ruin it. Did it on mine. Set the Bilsteins at either the 3rd notch, 1.75" lift or the full 2.5" setting. I guarantee your stock coils are sagging a little so if you want 2" of lift I'd go the 2.5" setting.
Also, at this point you may as well get the rear shocks too since they are only like another $100 for the pair of them.

Thanks, was kinda thinking that would be the case.

Are those top nuts traditionally a pain in the ass? Is there a trick to getting those off?
