4th Gen Suspension Options/FAQ

Did you use the locker?

I have the 5100's and FJ springs for my runner and even though I'm not doing any serious off roading since its 2wheel, I believe the coils paid for themselves this weekend. I went to the coast and while looking for some fishing spots I backed up into a nice mud hole that covered half my rear wheel. I couldn't see while reversing as I had a full load of crap blocking my rear window and when I got out to asses the situation, I was totally flexed with one tire in a mud hole, and my left tire up in the air on the higher end of the hole. I was able to just power out and save my a&$ because of the new set up. I'm certain if I had stock springs I would have gotten stuck. So y'all saved me. Thanks

to get out?

I'm looking at a set of used FJ TRD shocks with ARB/OME springs. What would this give me in terms of lift?

I've currently got the 2.5 Daystar spacer on the front but I'd like another .5"-1" of lift as the front is still lower than the rear. I'm thinking about removing the Daystar and running the FJ/OME setup if the amount of lift is right.

The shocks don't add any lift. It'd be whatever the OME springs are rated for. You'd need to specify which one.

884s are rated for 2.5 to 3"s

But i wouldn't run them without UCA's especially if you dont have any extra weight up front.

Quick THANK YOU for starting this thread and info provided. Was a huge help when thinking through lift and tire options... Much Appreciated!

Would like some ideas and feedback!

I am hoping some of you veterans can provide me feedback with a lift I am piecing together:

Front – Toytec Ultimate Bilstein Coilovers - $799
Front – UCA – Light Racing - $485 – Might not do until later depending how everything rides after lift
Back – Bilstein shock - $199
Back – Metal Tech long travel spring - $230
Total cost – $1,713 (I'd like to keep total around this or less without UCAs initially)

Probably do a diff drop and sway bar relocate, but I have no Idea if I need to do anything else along with the lift. Bump stops? Brake lines? I have very limited mechanical knowledge, but I have friends that are mechanics that are going to help install.

The reason I am looking at this mix match is price and good reviews I have seen reading around the forum. Are there any better options for around the same price? Will this setup work together well?

About me – I don’t even have a 4runner yet and I am already planning how to spend all my money on mods. V8 4x4 runners are nearly impossible to find here so hopefully one pops up soon in good condition.

99% of the time the vehicle will be used for commuting to and from work/doing family stuff. I would like to start off roading though and I would like the vehicle to be capable so we can go camping and have fun wheeling.

Sorry for long post! Thanks everyone!

Xreas

Hi, I've spent a lot of time reading suspension information and cannot find the answer I am looking for. I was told I have a blown shock by a mechanic and my car would fail inspection. The question is, do the shocks and struts and coils tie in to the XREAS system and need to be Toyota parts, or are they replaceable independently. My research is that the XREAS is approx. $2500 to replace the whole thing (170k miles). The alternative is to delete the XREAS. I am aware of the price difference and all, but this is a "so I don't get ripped off question". I guess I just want a better description/understanding of the system. Please help if you can.

You're on the right track. The shocks are tied into the XREAS system. So you can either replace the system with a new XREAS (I'm not sure you can just get the individual shocks TBH, hopefully someone else can chime in on that), or just dump the XREAS and get Bilstein 5100s/OME Nitros/etc.

It is possible to get just a shock replaced because there is a disconnect junction but it really isn't worth it. XREAS is great, but any replacement shocks would work as good or you can step up slightly and have much better. For the $2300 price tag of complete replacement you could even get coilovers for the front with matching rear shocks and have money left over. Lift or no lift.

I have 4" Maxtrac spindles and 5100s with stock coils set at 2.5. What cool options would you all suggest to help me establish a true 3" on the front coils?

I would recommend getting longer shocks for the rear if you are putting in MT LT coils.

Thank you guys. I have decided to replace the whole system to pass inspection. I will undoubtedly lift in the future, so for right now I'm going with a basic xreas delete set up.

Thank you for the reply, do you have a good recommendation for rear shocks that have a longer travel and would pair nice with the MT LTs?

I am also considering a fox 2.5 or 2.0 front coilover now, just knock it out up front instead of spending twice.

You are better off going with the Mt long travel kit. It has everything you need. For $1100 you can get the stage 4 kit with either icon or radflo shocks that have 11.5" of travel (I prefer radflo). You could get the coils and such then find a shock with 11.5-14" of travel but you may need to move shock mounts slightly to compensate.

I have done a bit of research on this and plan to get OME 60071L's for the rear shocks when I replace my 5100's. The specs on these shocks gives 11.26" of travel but don't require bump stops which will limit up travel since their compressed length is 15.23" and extend to 26.49". These specs are very similar to the MT LT's which is compressed at 17" extended at 28.5" with 11.5" of travel but need about 3" of bump stop limiting up travel to keep the shock from over compressing.

I like that you won't have to use the bumpstop drop. Do you know how the ome shocks will handle? Comparable to the icon or radflo shocks available with the kit from MT? My biggest issue is the ass jumps all over, bottoms out, and just can't keep up with the front even with Bilsteins all around. Whenever I upgrade the rear I'm also going to use superbumps.

I have 2012 FJ Trail Teams strut/coil up front right now. MT is having 15% off Radflo this week though so I just went with RadFlo extended travel 2.5 coils. $992 delivered to my door :whoo:

In the rear I have 5100 with FJ trail teams springs and Daystar spacer, but they will have to stay for now as I cant afford another $1000.

Lots of good info from everyone which what I was hopping for since you guys know a lot more than I do!

I really dont want the rear bouncing around as described above, ideally I would like 3 inches in the front, 1.5 or 2 inches in the back (whatever pretty much levels it) and a 1 inch body lift and some nice 33s. Since the vehicle will be a commuter and toy, ride on highway and ability to offroad when I want to are important.

Maybe I should skip the MT long travel coils since I wont be doing any rock crawling. Is the FJ/5100 combo still the best budget friendly option? If im willing to spend a little more to not have to upgrade later should I go with something nicer like Icons or fox etc.?

I have the fj coils and bilstein and I don't like it. They don't dampen right and now the Bilsteins are leaking oil everywhere. I actually started a thread about bilstein problems if you look it up. I've been through 1 front and now both rears are shot after 2 years of mostly DD life. Ome sounds like a better option, but icon/radflo/fox/king etc will be your best ride by far with or without long travel.

I actually read a lot of your posts the other day including your build thread and the bilstein thread, keep up the awesome work man, but so many people use them as a budget option I figured it was a good place to start till I figure out what I like and dont like.

My problem is I have no clue how to properly balance a suspension. I dont want the front and rear to not get along and cause a bumpy ride.

So if I got fox 2.0 or 2.5 front I wouldnt know what I need on the back to A) level everything and B) work well with the front.
