4th Gen Suspension Options/FAQ

Dazed and Confused, help!

I have been reading posts for weeks and looking for direction as this is out of my wheelhouse. Wife's daily driver 90% highway 10% off road and a is 2004 Sport V8 4x4 166,000 miles with original Xreas. One is leaking and putting new tires on as others uneven wear. Tires BFG TKO2 265/70R17.

I am ditching the xreas and have 2007 fj springs coming for all 4 corners. I guess the fronts they did not dismantle so coming as package, 85,000 miles on them.

Do I do 5100s in back and keep the fj setup in front or go 5100's all the way around for fresh set. Also where and what spacers to keep it level look, not wanting big lift look. If I order front 5100's are they the straight shocks or struts? Shockwarehouse confused me even more saying it needs to be the struts.

Please help, need to get rolling on this!

Personally, I'd get new shocks all around that way the ride quality is the same. Fronts are struts, rears are shocks. The struts are height adjustable, so you can set it to .85 (first setting) to level out the ride if you're not adding any further lift.

Personally I'd get new shocks whether Bilsteins or not. Coils will give you 1/2" of lift. To level your set Bilsteins at .85 which is first notch up from bottom. For lift, you could get rear daystar 1.5" spacer and set Bilsteins at 2.5 in front. Or anywhere in between.
Get Bilsteins from "Down South Motorsports", they can also answer questions much better. Great company to work with.
Front are strut/coilover, rear is shock. You will either have to put front assembly together or have a shop do it. Should be cheap.

Here in a few weeks I will be installing a CBI front bumper so I am looking into suspension options to handle the weight. Right now I have Bilstein 5100's front and rear, with stock coils on the front, and FJ coils on the rear.

My question is, can I pair the OME HD springs with Bilstein 5100 shocks? Or, will I need to replace the Bilsteins? I have only had them on for about a year so I would hate to switch to something else at this point.

Any help is appreciated

I'd love to hear options for this as well. I currently have 5100's with toytec 10% heavier springs, with a rooftop tent. I'm planning on doing an arb bumper and winch, as well as sliders and skids. Do I need to think about doing OME stuff or can I run the OME heavy springs on my 5100's?

QUESTION: I have 2nd Gen Tacoma springs up front on Yellow Bilsteins currently and it's slightly lifted. If i add 5100 adjustable and set to 1.75, i would be just shy of 3", i would think. Anyone done this?

Would then add Toytec 2" springs and 5100 rear if i can find a pair. Thoughts on this basic lift?

If Tacoma springs up front won't work, i'd likely go full OME with 885.

So I ordered the 3" toytec lift with boss rears and bilstein coilovers in the front. If I go full lift/level with it what's the max tire size I can put on with the stock 17" rims? I gotta order the tires before we do the lift.

3" lift, 285/70/17 or 255's. Might need some slight bumper trimming, trim body mount, and potentially lose the mud flaps. Any bigger means more cutting.

Thanks, yeah I realized all that info was on the first page! Should be a fun next few days.

noticed my xreas leaking the other day and im in the process of getting some 5100's to replace. Might as well get a lift for cheaper, however it was unexpected so I dont have all the funds for a full out lift with new coils ucas etc but dont want my shocks to go to crap completely while crusing down the highway. Question is this; I have a set of 5th Gen Trail springs available to me if i want them, is there any advantage in replacing my current factory springs with these when installing the 5100s?

At what lift height does an adjustable panhard bar become necessary? I'm going to install Radflo 2" lift coils soon and I can't find any clear info about what lift height makes a bar upgrade a necessity.

You'll be fine with 2". Hell most running 3.5" still don't have an adjustable Panhard and don't have issues.

So I have an 05 V8 with a shot xreas system. I am going to be purchasing a set of 5100s for the front and rear. My goal is about a 2 inch lift. If i keep the front springs which set of OME coils should I order to keep a little bit of rake? I am going to set the front at the 1.75 mark and am just not sure what coils to go with for the rear. I am ok with going to the 2.5 mark in the front as well, I just dont want to replace the UCA if not needed

Yeah, I'm finally getting this done, we've got an '08 V8/AWD with a blown XREAS setup.

My plan was 5100s, a Daystar rear 1.5" lift kit and some 07-09 FJ springs, but the springs have pretty much dried up (at least in the used market, haven't checked new dealer pricing).

So I'm wondering if there's a better spring option.

Looks like factory FJ springs are about $100 ea.

Ive done a lot of research on this one lately, and just saw the install on a 5th gen. I think ive decided to go with 5100s all the way around. OME 2889 in the rear and 2884 in the front. Should net around 2 inches int he rear and 2 in the front depending on what 5100 setting i go with. a pair of OME is about 167 in most places. Reach out to Apex Overland for some help though he knows more than I do

Thanks, yeah, it looks like the days of scoring a set of 4 low mileage takeoffs for under $100 is no more. So I was figuring, if I'm going to spend close to $400 on the springs, is there a better option in that price range.

Which may be answer by the next poster :D

Cool, thanks for the recommendation and contact. Do those OMEs require a spacer in the rear to level things out? Definitely want a totally "flat" setup.

My plans, at least from a suspension standpoint:

- new shocks, springs, with about a 1.5-2" lift
- have the stock 18" wheels powder coated black
- add some Spidertrack spacers for a little wider stance

(I recently put spacers on my Mustang after springs, holy smokes, it looks fantastic).
