4th Gen Suspension Options/FAQ

You could do the 3/2 kit I have on sale right now, and that would do it.

Aye, this appears to be enough too. Looks like a 305/17/16 is just under 33".

New suspension on the wife’s 4runner.

Is it standard operating procedure to get an alignment after replacing shocks/springs all-around? And if so, is it advisable to wait a week for settling to occur?

Yes. I noticed the tires were at a different angle after the lift. I think I’m just going to get the firestone lifetime alignment. I’ve had it on my tacoma for almost 5 years and get an alignment every 6 months and or after major off-roading.

Here are some more pics. Looks more than 1.25” lift probably because old suspension was shot.

So I lifted my rig a few months ago. And a week ago I had spacers installed for extra height and after a few days of driving I noticed my UCAs are rubbing my springs. My Bilstiens are set at .85 with a 1" daystar spacer. Has this happened to anyone? Do I need new UCAs?

Hello From Georgia (EU) !
I just bought 2003 4runner 4.0 SR5. Can you suggest me how to lift it?
I want suspension lift, as I understand Bilstein 5100 are good option with front OME 884 and OME 895 and some wheel spacers (1'-1.5' inch). Can you help me?
also I can have FJ 2007 springs
I need to buy everything in USA then Ship in georgia and pay huge tax and shipping. How good FJ springs are? Do I need to modificate other things?
thank you

New OME suspension being funky

I don't post much, so apologies if this is the wrong spot.

Weird suspension issue- I have new bilsteins 5100s with 883 ome in the front and 895e in the rear for a year, then bam, all this sway, bumpiness bump steer just started happening- lower control arms, links replaced, multiple shops said all is good down below.

I lost my mind, 4 months ago got new ome shocks 900021 and 60004 , now im bumping and flying all over the road-

so my question is, is pre-load a real thing- was the suspension somehow installed preloaded so my ride is more bouncey, not floating but like i go up and down on small bumps.

I do have 275 65 18 k02's on my 08 with a mix of 35-40psi but none of that mattered, drives like crap now.

ARK_SWAMP_RIDER: I completely agree with JB...this should be "front-page news".

Last week, my trusted mechanic replaced XREAS and RAS on my 2004 4WD V8 Limited with the following parts:
 • Metal Tech rear air to coil conversion kit (directly from MT)
 • Bilstein 5100 front and rear (from BoostProjects/Amazon)
 • slightly used coil springs from a 2016 TE (the "new FJ springs") (from eBay)
 • front and rear sway bar bushings and links (from CarID)
The suspension upgrade came out exactly as I had hoped: supple yet firm, approximate lift 1.25" front (with the Bilsteins set to .85") and 0.5" in the rear. Ride height is 20"/20.5" F and 21.5"/22" R with the tank full. This gives me exactly the lift I need for going to 32" tires in the future and provides a supple yet firm ride. I tried it out on the Iron County Recreation Trail (UP of MI) and really like the way it rides.

Both front springs are the same, marked white-orange and with the extra wrap (p/n probably 4813135650). Both rear springs are also the same, marked orange-pink, 373mm (14 11/16") in length (2mm shorter than the stated length for the FJ rears). (Pix included below.)

IMO anyone having trouble looking for a decent set of FJ springs should consider getting springs from a 5th-gen 4Runner instead. They are widely available and relatively inexpensive.

I have been searching this forum for 4 days and finally found out that I can use 2010+ FJ springs thanks to your comment here!! Thank you! Is there anything I should know about using 2010+ fj springs and belstien 5100s all around?

Misc parts?

I'm planning to run OME 885/895e + Bilstien 5100s on my '04 V8 4x4.

What other misc parts/items do I need (if any) while getting in there and installing the lift? I'm going to add a 5mm driver side spacer to eliminate lean, but is there anything else I'm missing?

Should I take the opportunity to replace any bushings? Upgrade the shock mounts? I'm not planning to do UCAs (yet).

The car has 138k miles on it and is all stock. Would love to know if there's anything else that would be typically worn out by now I can go in and update (related to suspension) at this point.

Cheers

One thing you may want to consider checking is your cv axle boots. Because when i installed my lift last month i noticed that one of my boots had a tear in it. So its good to have boots that actually work lol, so you may want to check that out. You also may want to double check your sway bar bushings.

the 885 is sprung for the weight of the truck plus 200+ lbs of additional weight and the 895e is sprung for the weight of the truck plus 100lbs of additional weight. The 5100s valved are for the trucks stock weight with a 1 to 2" lift. So unless you always carry somewhere around 200 to 300 lbs of additional weight all the time you could experience a reduction in ride quality since theres such a difference between the spring rate fo the coils and the valving of the strut/shocks.

You should consider sway bar relocators and if you can do the bushings it would be a good time to do it. Also you'll most likely need UCAs...

Super helpful, thank you. So a 884 is probably a better choice for the fronts in terms of a stock vehicle w/ no bumper/wench (I don't have either and not planning on it) and pairing with 5100's? Are the 885 rears for a lighter load than 885e's?

Also, I spoke to a couple people at 4Wheel Parts and they both mentioned OME springs aren't even compatable with 5100's and with OME springs you can't "mix n match", contrary to what multiple people on here have done. What's up with that?

I do and they ride just fine. Its probably because its not a Jeep. I avoid 4wp like the plague. Try Wheelers Off Road.

OME application guide on the US ARB web site for what low, med and heavy weight options there are for the 4th gen. OME struts and shocks are valved for OME springs in that they too assume additional weight beyond the weight of the truck like rons arb bumper. Id recommend the wheeler t1-t12 or t13 or the various dobinson coils if youre pairing um with 5100s since the spring rates are more in line with the valving of the 5100s. Depending on the truck once you get into the 2.5" +lift range your could be looking at UCAs as well. good luck
