4th Gen Suspension Options/FAQ

Literally in the first post yo.

3/2
275/70R17 (32.2 x 10.8)
285/70R17† (32.6 x 11.2)
255/80R17* (33 x 10)

Thanks,
I was actually looking to see what folks thought about that particular lift kit also....I'm a girl lol and just need some feedback really as to if I am making good decisions on the lift etc. and what would go together best. Thanks!

As you mentioned, it comes with everything needed. It's a solid entry level lift kit that many people go with. It's not crazy stiff and won't ruin your ride. Most people tend to prefer the slightly stiffer setup from stock. Definitely can't go wrong.

What's your end goal with the lift? Just looks or planning to offroad?

Just for looks mainly. Only occasionally off road during hunting season and such, then it's not really rough terrain. Thanks for your input.... I appreciate it!

Gotcha, yeah your choice of setup will do you nicely. Pair that with some 275/70/17 or 285/70/17 BFGs and you'll be golden. You may find some rubbing with the 285s, it's kinda hit or miss.

OK, so I have spent about 40-60hrs reading almost every page of the suspension and other threads and have gained a wealth of knowledge about lifting my 06. Bottom line is that I want to know what is the consensus better setup for lifting, ride quality, reliability, etc...Good or bad, I think I am going 5100's all around. I don't offroad, but will not rule out going on a guided mud trail or something, but nothing too stressing on the vehicle. 2006 SR5 115k v6 bull bar and 3rd row seats for weight additions.

Option1: 5100s with wheelers T1 (approx 1.75")/T12 (approx 1.5")
Option2: 5100s with OME 885 front and superflex rear.

I have seen the following combos on the various boards:
Brand Size Lift User
BFG KO2 275/70/17 5100, OME 970mtnrunner
BFG KO2 265/70/17 5100/T1-T12 MRPink
BFG KO2 265/70/17 5100/T1-T12 Mizak82
BFG KO2 275/70/17 5100/OME-Toytec tooltime19
Toyo Open Country A/T 285/70/17 5100/OME jblinga

Question1: Anyone have an opinion on whether wheelers T1/T12 with 5100s and NOTHING ELSE will fit without cutting/trimming anything KO2 or similar in:
275/70/17 - KO2 is slightly bigger than the suggested 32.2x10.8 for 3/2 lifts - seems out of my fitment
275/65/17 - Not listed in the fitment sticky
265/70/17 - Looks like this is a good fit for 2/1
255/75/17 - Looks like this is a good fit for 2/1

Question2: Is the above T1/T12 enough to be considered a 2/1 lift, maybe put the front bilsteins at .85?

Question3: Does it pay to have the coils/shocks pre-assembled for almost $100 if offered?

Hoping to hear from tman and some others....I promise, I have done my homework but cant find the exact answers to the above.

Watson, I have the exact setup you talk about, 5100s with T1/T12 coils. Side picture below of mine gives you an idea of the lift, I'd say it's closer to 2.5" on front and 1.5" on rear. I'm running a V8 limited.

I am running lift from the coils only, the 5100 shocks are on their lowest perch. Rides great on the highway and is less floaty over bumps. Haven't done anything super rough yet but has handled the odd dirt road very well.

On tires, I'm on 265/65/R18 which is one above standard. This runs with no rubbing and no trimming required. It's close at full lock on the front, but there is loads of room at the rear. This equates to 265/70/17 so with this lift you should be ok. Note I'm running Bridgestone Duelers, Maybe KOs would be slightly larger with the thread? Something to consider. However I'd recommend this setup depending on how much Highway driving and what kind of off roading you want to do. So safe to assume at least 2" front and 1.5" rear for your tire calc with this setup.

Any questions on it, let me know. I had the guy fitting my suspension put together the shocks/coils.

Thanks IRL, I will be doing mostly highway/small town driving. I really want to fill the wheel well with the 275/70/17 KOs or something with a similar look. If the look is the same but the size is slightly smaller for a comparable tire I would be flexible with tire choice.

For the T1/T12 setup, did you catch wheelers with a free shipping or on a sale or something? I think their prices are competitive but when I loaded up my cart there was like a $90+ shipping charge. I guess I am so used to free shipping that it startled me to see that added to the total.

Got the truck inspected and unfortunately, I still have like 60% tread left and at 5-7k miles per year I either have to waste that tread, sell the tires cheap, or wait like 2yrs to get the lift and tires done. I don't like option3

Buy some cheap wheels or steelies, mount the old tires on them, and have summer/winter tires. Win-win :thumb:

problem is I want to get TRD's eventually and use the stock wheels as the 'extra set', so I'm just adding to the shopping list. I already have a 2nd set of wheels and tires sitting in my garage for my Ftype...its gonna look like a tire and hubcap shop soon.

We have an 03 Sequoia and 4Runner and both of their tires have as much or more tread than my 06...WTF, I'm exploring all options.

Question help

3inch rough country. 2006 4runner. 285/70/17. IROK Swampers - YUP They rub!!!

Yup! rookie move after reading all of the problems of tire rubbing, chopping, trimming stuff.
Thinking i dont want to do the BL because of the more modifications needed. Therefore, does anyone have pictures of cutting, fenders, chopping there 4th Gen? to make these tires fit?

I'm not sure if they're still active on this website (I believe it was YotaDan), but I bought my stuff via TacomaWorld, where they have an official account and have a forum discount. Yeah, you gotta pay for the shipping, but it's not too bad.

FYI, I'm about to setup the 885/Superflex combo. I have 885/895 right now, but it's too stiff in the back. I can post some pics later this week.

Sounds like a good setup for you then. Best to keep doing some research and then pull the trigger on your setup once you know what you want.

Wheelers did charge shipping from what I recall, but I got the coils in a sale so it evened out. Amazon has us thinking all shipping should be free! I think they ship from Colorado and they are heavy so 60-90 bucks sounds about right.

On the Tires, I guess all of us doing a build face replacing some parts before they have worn out. Do the suspension, then work up to the tires as I think most people do it in that order. You can sell the tires on Craigslist or keep them as winter tires perhaps. Bear in mind the 275's will be 10mm wider than the 265s so may rub. I kept the same width and it wasn't an issue, but others on the forum can answer if wider tires cause any issues.

thinking to pull my OME suspension

thinking to pull my 883's, rear 895e and 90000's and 60004's

think they would sell used on the forums just fine or would i just toss them?

most of the setup is less than 10k miles, springs are 30k miles

For sure sell that. You could easily net $500 for the whole set, if not more.

Thank you! Any recs on a more lifted yet plush ride setup?
What I have is pretty comfy IMO. I have Bilstein 5100s and OME885s in the front (for a full 3" lift), and OME Nitrochargers/Superflex RCC2.0s in the back.

I just swapped out my rears with the Superflex (had OME895s before). The 895s were just way too stiff, it rides so much more comfortably with the Superflex. I might actually go Bilstein on the rears again, because I know the OMEs are valved for a firmer ride. FYI, the 895E still is 44% stiffer than stock. The Superflexes are 10% stiffer than stock. Night and day difference.

With everything I have up front, it still is raking pretty hard right now, plus the rear still needs to settle. But I think it'll look good overall. Gonna get a 5mm trim spacer up front to level it out a bit more once it settles.

I am planning on lifting my 4runner soon. Bilstein 5100’s in the front and rear with stock coils in the front and ome 895e in the rear. I want to try to stuff 285/75/16 tires under it. I know I’ll Have to remove mud flap and move fender liner as well as possibly cut part of the bumper. I am currently running stock 265/70/17 with the oem 17 inch wheel. I have the opportunity to get a set of 5 trd Tacoma wheels of an 08 Pre runner. Would I be Able to stuff the tires on the 16 inch wheel, doing all the work stated above or will I NEED a body mount chop? I’m not afraid of doing it I just would like some input before I get it all together and don’t have a welder on hand that day. I believe these are the specs for the trd wheel

TRD Off-Road Wheels: 16x7, +32 mm offset, 5.25" backspacing, 6x5.5" bolt pattern
Part Number:
69461
42611AD030
42611AD031

If I could get away with using these wheels for free and not pay upwards of $600 that would make the wife happy and free up some money for other mods lol

Which model do you have? I know that the Sport has to have 17” wheels because of the larger brakes...unless you grind down some of th caliper I think? I have no input towards the body mount chop other than I would safely assume you have to

Edit: I just remembered that some have trouble fitting a 33” tire without adequate backspacing and offset due to the upper control arm...maybe someone else will chime in

I have a 2003 limited v8. I’ve test fitted a 16 inch wheel and it fit with plenty room around the brakes and rotor so I know I’m good there. How did you fix your issue? Did you use wheel spacers?

Update on the lift and tire question. I installed my ome 895e and bilstein 5100’s today. Also put on some 285/75/16 on the Tacoma alloy wheel. As is sits right now I have 1/4-1/2 inch space between the UCA and there is a little knob on the knuckle that pokes out a bit. About 1/4-1/2 inch there too. It drove so smooth before the lift and I was worried I was going to ruin the ride with the coils and the shocks. But it actually rides about the same! And so far I’ve don’t everything I can on a normal road way and still no running unless at full lock. Even curbing the tire at a harsh rate hasn’t affected the running at all. So far only rubs at full lock forward and reverse. No Picts before the lift but I sure will post some after pics in the lift and tire central once I get some!
