4th Gen Suspension Options/FAQ

Hey all...looking for some advice. Just sold a set of wheels/tires off my WRX so freed up a little cash to replace the suspension (that's *well* past the point of dead) on my 4th gen.

Currently on the truck is what I'm under the impression is the Toytec 3/2 kit. The shocks from what I can tell are Bilstein 5100s, and it has Toytec Superflex springs.

Let's call my budget $500.

From what I can tell on the Toytec site, the OME kit is ~$900. Toytec's lift seems to be $1000, unless I'm mis-reading the site.

In the sake of hoping that someone can steer me in the right direction quickly, what would be my best option to keep it in the $500 budget? Replace the shocks and springs individually and try to keep the cost down?

Any help is much appreciated.

Best bang for the buck i can think of is the lightly used or takeoff suspension off a 5th gen TRD Pro. Ive seen some on the est coast in your, or possibly within negotiating range..

coil spring question

Hello all,

I've searched far and wide for an answer to this and I'm wondering if anyone can help/give advice.

I just ordered a set of Bilsteins for my 06' and in an effort to make installation more easy I went ahead and ordered a new set of MOOG OEM spec front springs, that way I can have the springs pre-installed on the shocks to make installation a bit more simple (don't have to remove the factory shocks, then be without a vehicle while the shop swaps the springs out)

My question is...

Would it be a good idea to go ahead and buy a new set of springs for the rear as well? My fear is that overtime the factory springs have weakened and it will affect ride performance as well as the stance of the vehicle. I went with the factory spec MOOG's as I'm not trying to achieve a ton of lift, just replacing worn shocks and trying to level the vehicle out in the process. I plan on just setting the Bilstein's to the .85 setting, as it appears the 1.75 will give me a stance with a slightly higher front end.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

you just raped this guys post. start your own thread when you can.

OP, theres a new eibach pro truck kit (look on tirerack) for $675 new. rancho has some kits around that price i think.

im going bilstein 5100 and ome 883/895e pretty soon, which comes out to under $700 with new kyb topplates too.

bilsteins with moog FJ fronts and rears. look on amazon for these. i think the rear fj moog coil .5" trimmed off coil will allow it to seat right.

good luck.

Haha you're in the 4th Gen Suspension Options/FAQ thread. :caked:

I posted this in an ongoing stickied thread about suspension options for 4th gen Runners. I didn’t rape anyone’s post.

As I said, I already have the Bilsteins and the new factory spec front springs. I’m simply asking if it will effect the stance of the vehicle if I don’t ALSO replace the rear springs (do they flatten out/weaken over time?) I looked at the Eibach kit. It’s got 2.75” of lift in the front, which is way more than I’m looking for. My Runner is a daily driver that I seldom take off-roading and even when I do it’s pretty mild.

Question all, I just put OME 886 and 5100s in the front of my 05 4Runner and new KYB tophats. While we were putting the springs/shocks in the place I noticed the KYB tophats didn’t come with new washers/bushing. So we had to reuse the bushing and washer from the stock shocks. We have the new nylock nut on top but wanted everyone’s opinions.

Yes. Since each is different youll probably need to try different c clip settings to et it the way you want it.

King's rear with Metal Tech LT Medium Coils. Bump Stops? Limiting straps?

Hey guys so I just purchased a set of King's shocks with resis and adjusters for the rear of my 2003 4runner (I already have King's in the front with TC UCAs). I also ordered a set of LT coils from Metal Tech. So I'm looking for some tips or personal experience from people with a similar setup. I haven't bought new bump stops or bump stop spacers so I'm curious if I should, I am only running 265/70/17. I am mainly concerned that the shocks are a little longer at collapsed length so I don't want to be bottoming out my shocks. I am also curious if you guys have or would advise installing limiting straps for the rear since the coils I bought are so long and my shocks aren't to long travel spec (they have somewhere between 8-inches of travel. Keep in mind that I am still running my sway bars and plan on keeping them on for better road manners. First time I'm posting on here so I may be doing something wrong so let me know. Thanks guys!

You'll be perfectly fine running any standard length rear shock with virtually any spring including the 'LT' spec length springs. I have that setup but with Icon shocks and it does well, no need to mess with bump stops or limit straps.

Question for the experts, 2wd/4wd springs, v6/v8 springs

Ok, lets see if anyone can answer this.

Factory 03-09 4runner springs for 4wd v8 models with/without xreas. Are front/rear springs all the same lengths?

Factory 03-09 4runner springs for 4wd V6 models with/without xreas. Are front/rear springs all the same lengths?

Lol, someone on here might know this?

I don't get a consistent answer from touted or eibach. Was hoping for a little real world help. Don't want to put it together and have to take it back apart because it's too high or to low. Looking for 2-2.5".
Any input greatly appreciated

I think the reason you cannot get a consistent answer is, lift amounts are assuming "stock height". So 2-2.5" from stock (read, new). The problem is, no one knows how much your current springs have sagged. so, you and I could put the same exact shock and spring setup on our trucks, the actual achieved lift could be different based on the amount of sag each out vehicles had.

Makes sense in my head anyway. :boom:

Playing with some options here. Hoping for input...I'm simply overwhelmed by the info out there. At the point of "analysis paralysis."

Option 1 -- Toytec 3" kit w/Bilstein 5100s - P/N TTHA-CK-RCC-0309 - $1053 as configured (front diff drop kit, Superflex rear coils, Toytec Boss rear shocks)
https://www.toyteclifts.com/ttafcs-ha-0309-toytec-bilstein-coilovers-for-03-09-4runner-4.html

Option 2 - OME kit - P/N OME-FJ4R - $1138 as configured (885 front coils, front spacer kit, assembly w/new hardware, front diff drop kit, Superflex rear coils, 60020-P-FJ Old Man Emu rear shocks)
https://www.toyteclifts.com/ome-fj4r-old-man-emu-suspension-07-09-fj-03-09-4runner.html

Being that they're within $100 of each other, which is the better choice?

did you update your sig before getting the kit? ;)

i wanted the 883/895e that toytec didnt offer in a bundle or w.e.
so i bought 5100s, old man emu springs, and kyb top mounts all off amazon in the $700-$800 range. the install shop will assemble
the fronts which can save some $

to answer your question - id go with the old man emu kit. their shocks are better than bilsteins from what i recall.

Sig reflects what's currently on the truck. Beaten and bruised setup. They don't do as much suspending as they do keeping it from riding on the bumpstops.

Can you PM me (or post here) links to each of the parts? Again, information overload...$700-800 is much more palatable than $1100

So I did my research, but now I'm calling mechanics to get quotes and they're telling me what I'm wanting isn't possible. I've called 3 places with the same response.

I have a 2008 4runner w/ XREAS. I want the XREAS removed, the bilstein 5100s installed front and back w/ 2.5" in the front, and a 1.5" spacer in the back. They say that's not possible but everything I read says that's what a lot of people do.

What am I missing on this? Each place I've called has tried to sell me on something significantly more expensive when asking for a quote.

Do you have tools, have you look into just doing it yourself?

Im still debating between 6112 front/icon 2.0 rear or just go ahead and do icon stage 2. theres too many options!
