4th Gen Suspension Options/FAQ

Nice buy! How large are you looking to go on the tires? If you’re looking to replace the wheels I recommend aftermarket 17” wheels. You’ll gain extra tire on the sidewall. You can look at OEM 5th gen wheels or aftermarket. Aftermarket wheels will generally be lighter and have a 0 or negative offset. That type of offset will reduce the possibility of a large tire rubbing by pushing it out away from things (just like a spacer). You may still need to trim some stuff, remove mudflats, and push the liner forward.

Tires can range from something a little bigger than stock like a 265/70/17 or about 31.5”. To 275/70/17 or 32”. Or a 255/70/17 which is also 32” but narrower and likely lighter than a 275 (lighter and better on gas). Or just go big and go 285/70/17 33” tire.

Some popular all terrain tires are BFG KO2, Falken Wildpeak A/T3W, Goodyear DuraTrac, Cooper AT3, and various others.

On the topic of new tires. I'm about to start a build on a 2008 V8 limited, will be deleting the XREAS and RAS (not sure if either is currently working, but don't care since I'm replacing them regardless), and putting on a 3" spring lift (or as much spring as I can get, possibly augmenting with a little bit of spacer to get to a full 3").

Currently planning to go with a 33-34" tire, but trying to keep the width at or under 11". What I'm wondering is if the amount of sidewall on 18s at that size would be "enough" since it's basically the same sidewall height as 31s on 16" wheels. Would the extra 1/2 of sidewall from going down to R17s would be a significant difference? Since the brakes on the V8 limited are probably sized for towing 7k, I'm not sure if they'd fit inside of 16s so I'm not sure if that's even an option.

You're right- you won't be able to fit 16s, 17 is the smallest you can go. Personally I think it depends on your use case. If you're going to be offroading a lot, and that's a priority for you, get some 17s, but if its a 95% on-road and 5% mild off roading kind of rig, 18s will be plenty good. I do like the way the 17s look though :) I went with 17s on my limited only because the original 18" wheels were already in terrible shape, I needed new tires anyway, and I got a set of 7-spoke Trail wheels from a newer 4Runner for $350. Would have had no issues sticking with 18s.

This build is primarily a "trail rig", but all the trails are pretty far from home so there'll be a lot of highway driving involved in getting there and back. I'm 99% sure the 4x4 tacomas come stock with 31s on 16s (at least that's pretty much what my 2010 TRD OR PreRunner had), and the 33.6" tires (the next step up I can find are 35" diameter, or the 34x12.5s which seem like they'd rub as much from the extra width) I'm likely going with will have about the same sidewall height as those had.

Unless I can find someone looking to swap 5 wheels, I'm not sure I want to spend the $$ for wheels just now on top of the rest of the build. Currently $4k into the parts orders and still need to get the rear bumper/swingout sorted.

Currently, it looks like I'll be getting the suspension parts at least 10 weeks ahead of the front bumper, and I really need to get the XREAS out of the way to get the sliders sorted out, whatever their lead time will end up being. Ideally, I want to have this thing ready to roll by late June, but it's seeming like it might get tight.

Yup lead times are crazy right now. Couple weeks and I should finally have my suspension in though, so its a start! I'm not nearly as experienced as most folks here, but I can't imagine the 18" vs. 17" wheel would make enough real difference to justify the $$.

You could go with the Kenda 35"x10.5" if you're already considering a 34" tire

I'm almost certain that even the narrower 35s will require getting into the BMC and cutting rear wheel wells on a 3" lift. I'm hoping that at 33.6x11, I'll have a low enough amount of rubbing (with the right amount of caster angle) that I can live with it for a couple trips.

My prerunner rubs a bit with 32s on a 2" lift with factory UCAs, but only at full steering lock, and I think that might be because the RWD can steer a bit deeper since it's not limited by CVs in the front.

Depending on when my spring locators come in (need to do a RAS delete as well as XREAS), I might end up with a "minivan on stlits" with the current 256/60R18 street tires on it with the 3" lift, although I'd have to leave the running boards on to complete that look.

So looking at options for my next set of tires. Wanting to fit a 33 if possible but don't want to do a body mount chop to the truck. I have 255/70/18 now with 5100s at .85 with TRD offroad 2nd gen tacoma coils and fj rear coils. Looking at going up to a 265/70/18 or 255/80/17 on some oem rims. Only thing keeping me from to 255/80/17 is not knowing if I have to cut the body mount, I can trim more of the bumper and fender liner no problem but don't want to chop the body mount. Then looking at the 265/70/18 on the forum its not a size I see people run often

I JUST got some 275/70/17 Falkens put on my 06 with roughly 3/2 lift (6112s and 5160s with OME coils) and there is zero rubbing. I was in a similar boat and didnt want to use 285s and have to deal with potential trimming. I did add some TRD wheels off a 2016 trail to help with the offset (+15mm vs. +25mm stock). Don't have a pic yet but can provide one soon if you'd like a peak.

What clip are your 6112s on to achieve 3in in front? Just installed 6112/5160 and stock rear springs with fronts on 2nd from bottom clip. Needs to settle a bit more but thinking if going with FJ rear springs to level it out a bit more.

Also curious on feedback for the 6112 / 5160 combo. I also have Trail wheels and I’m strongly considering a 32” tire (though I’m undecided on 275/70/17 or 255/75/17).

A few questions come to mind. I’ve looked at info on Bilsteins website and a few other posts. Any feedback on your experience is appreciated. Thanks!

- V8 or V6?
- Did you upgrade the 6112 springs?
- What spring perch did you use and how much lift did you gain?
- What springs are you running in the rear? How much lift?
- Any other weight on your rig (bumpers, skids, rear tire, rtt, etc...)?
- How happy are you with the setup and would you do anything differently?

4th Gen 4runner/FJ Springs

I am new to the 4runner world and have a 2006 v8 sr5 4runner. About to install a 2in level kit to get the front up off the wheel a bit, but then interested in a suspension lift in the near future as I plan to do an overland build. I notice a ton of people are running holstein 5100's with fj springs. What is the biggest difference between stock FJ springs and stock 4th gen 4runner springs?

I am at the second to last clip. I will mention, my previous set up was on the cheap and sagging so with a better before set up, may have only yielded a 2.5in or so. I'm very happy with it after ~5000 miles, very comfortable and like I mentioned, the 275s fit well. I dont have any spacers for leveling, rake is around 1-1.5in which I like. Better from the stock 2-2.5in.

I recently installed 6112s and 5160s and went with 275s to avoid the body chop or trimming. I'll answer your Qs below.

-V8
-No I didnt, stuck with the 6112 package.
-Second to last, about 2.5 - 3in from previous sagging set up
-OME 895s
-None at the moment
-I am very happy with it, rides great. Only major trail so far was the White Rim Road in Canyonlands and had no trouble at all (only had for ~5000 miles and now winter). Nothing else I would change at the moment but that may change as I add weight. We'll see.

See the “X-REAS delete...” post linked in my sig for a side-by-side pics of stock 4R springs vs. FJs.

Awesome thanks! So that’s the 5th of 6 possible lift setting. I think I’ll do the 4th with the upgraded 650 Lb springs. I can find them for cheaper than the standard 6112 for some reason.

Also thinking 895s for the rear. So you kept 1” or so of rake. I think that’s perfect. How do they ride? Kinda stiff unloaded for daily driving or are they okay?

Has anyone on here ever used the Rough Country 3 inch lift kit with N3 Struts? And if yes have you ever had a problem with them?

Ive spent many many hours on this forum and others before I made my decision on Icon for my lift. As far as quality goes in all aspects, I couldn't be happier. Honestly I feel like you are better off going with a different company other than rough country, I respect that it is your build but its worth the wait to get a quality product such as Billstein, Dobinsons, Icon, King, etc. In the long run you will be more satisfied.

Ride is great if you ask me, I dont find them too stiff. Perfectly fine for my every day driving needs. I don't have a ton of comparison (such as 5100s) but I like the DD ride.

Ok thank you I was just wondering how they compare because I was going to originally go with bilstien shocks and old man emu coils for the front and back but I’m also going to be moving across country in a few months. And I still have the original suspension on my 03. So I was trying to do a lift sooner than later.

Does anyone know if there's a possibility that the factory rear shocks from a 2nd gen TRD OR tacoma might fit a 2008 T4R Limited with Icon 3" lifting coils in place of the RAS bags?

It's not a DD vehicle, so I would be able to live with it riding shitty, and I wouldn't be looking to wheel it in that configuration. I need to get the XREAS out of the way to get going on sliders though, and the rear shocks I've got on order are the only part of the suspension kit that's held up from the manufacturer (currently not even an ETA date). I do have my old Taco parts in the garage, though and just started thinking that might be a way to get some progress on the build while I'm waiting.
