4th Gen to 5th Gen what do/don't you like

I have had every generation of 4runner since my first 1985 model. I just bought my 2013 (I currently have a couple 4th gen) and there are some changes that I think I HATE or like very little.

#1 you have to hold the key to start it
#2 the tailgate does not pull its-self closed
#3 you cannot roll down the back window from the FOB any more
#4 Only Option is the v6 even thought we waited 19 years to get a v8
#5 the Bright ECO light that stays on most of the time even at night
#6 the headlight on indicator (also Bright) is always on (i drive mostly @ Night)

What I do like is the room in the back seat, and the connectivity to my Phone, I like the new body, totally love the all windows being auto up and down, and I think I like the seats not being as deep.

Anyone else feel the same? It seems like some of the stuff was cost cutting (my 4x4 SR5 with 3rd row a the BARGAIN price of $38,262)

I feel like I lost more than I gained, but I needed something that was back in warranty and had 3rd row.

It just lists likes and dislikes. That is all. To be fair, Toyota has issued several TSB's to correct certain issues and corrected some of them in later years.

You can turn that eco light off, check the manual.

if you scroll through the Odometer displays with the little button you use to reset the trip meter, you'll come across one that says ECO on, push and hold the button and it will change it to ECO off, problem solved.

My two favorite things on my truck are the heated side view mirrors because it evaporates the water off of them while I'm driving (it mists/rains a lot in Seattle) and the other is the ability to answer texts by voice through bluetooth on my new phone (Nokia Lumia 920).

Same here. Ive got an S3 and would love to be able to do that.

I think you spot on on numbers 1 thru 4 but they don't bother me enough to not like the rig.

#7 The 3rd row seat in the 5th gen always gets junk stuck under it when it's open that prevents it from folding closed easily.

I preferred the jump seats in my 4th gen. We have lots one little kids and this is a constant pain.

I'm not exactly sure how to do it with the S3, I dumped my iPhone 4 for the Nokia Lumia 920 (new Windows 8 phone) about a month ago and I was driving along and it interrupted my music to say I had received a new message and it asked if I wanted to read it then after I could reply or call the person. All I did was pair the phone and it kicked in automatically. It's like Siri but useful. It doesn't do anything for creating texts, making phone calls, or anything else just reply to who ever texts at the time. Once you're done it reverts back to whatever was playing be it radio or MP3s. Sorry I couldn't be of more help

Have we as a society gotten that lazy that we cannot hold a key for a couple seconds or reach up and pull down a hatch? I hope not!

That said, I've always had to turn and hold a key on all my vehicles, never found it to be annoying, but then again maybe I don't know what I'm missing (much like the elusive burger tray).

I will agree with the headlight indicator, it is brighter than most vehicles I have driven. Once you get used to it your mind just ignores it.

I miss my 8cyl. from my 2004 sport ed. but the 6 we have in 5th gen has plenty of power and more fuel efficient, so that's a wash.

The eco light was annoying, turned it off at day one. This being my first 4runner, but fifth Toyota truck I'm loving it so far. Everyday I seem to fnd some new way to configure things. It is so far ahead of any of the Tacomas I have owned in options I'm just a pig in sh!t , happy. I hope the infamous Toyota longevity and problem free enjoyment continues to hold true.

Ya the ECO lights easy. It was bugging me too.

Not following you on the start issue though. I still have my 1997 4Runner and my 11 starts quicker than the old one, but you still need to hold the key somewhat?

I do think the 97 was built better than the new one. It's like a tank compared to my 11. I do like the 11 for the size and space and comfort though.

on my 2 03s my 04 and my 04 sequoia you hit the key (turn it to the start real quick) then let goo and it continues to crank until it starts or for like 3-4 seconds what ever come first.

I like that feature, I know it sounds lame but the few seconds during start up is my window to put my seat belt on.

Still I think my 04 may have been built a little better, but I am happy to have my new 13

For me it would have been a $600 option as my SR5 did not come with it installed. I passed on it, but also don't see the issue of turning the key.

only the limited (also has push button start) perhaps the TE. Not on the SR5 however.

I think What he is referring to is when you turn the keys to start the vehicle you have to hold the key in the start position as the vehicle starts. Some newer cars all you have to do is turn the key the 1/2 turn the start position and you can let go and it won't cancel the starting process. I like cars that do that.

I actually don't like the hard plastic on the steering wheel. Its not too comfortable when your hands are in certain positions. I would trade it for my old 4th gen steering wheel in a second.
