Wanted to share my experience with the TRD Pro suspension in case others decide to pursue this option. I found the complete suspension including UCA's, rear arms, panhard locally for $1k off a 200mi 2016 TRD Pro. The modifications listed below are the only items I had to change, the TRD Specific part numbers are detailed as well. This is only intended as a reference document, I'm assuming you know how to install suspension, if not there are a number of forum threads and youtube how-to's available that cover that.

Donor Vehicle: 2016 4Runner TRD Pro
Recepient: 2008 4Runner SR5 V8 4WD

Difficulty: Moderate, suspension experience recommended.

Tools:
Large Impact (numerous bolts required this)
1/2" Drill or similar (or a hand file if you're patient enough)
Heavy Duty Floor Jack (I used 3.5 Ton)
Heavy Duty Jackstands
Small jacks - For misc lifting to position parts
Metric tool set - flex head ratchets recommended
Saw/Grinder or similar - For trimming the front shock eyes down
Hex Set - Required for remote reservoir and sway links

Required Modifications:
Rear shock upper mount hole:
Existing - 7/8"
Required - 1"
Front shock lower mount:
Existing - Too Narrow by about 1/8 - 1/16
Action - Trim sides of shock eyes

Parts Details:
UCA - Same as non Xreas
Rear Lower Links - Same
Rear Upper Links - Same fit, but thicker eyes
Panhard - Same fit, but thicker, tapered bar
Rear Springs - Slightly thicker, 1 additional coil

Left Front Spring PTR13-89150-AA
Right Front Shock PTR13-89160-RF
Right Front Spring PTR13-89150-AA
Left Rear Shock PTR13-89150-LR
Right Rear Shock PTR13-89150-RR

Ride Height @ fender lip after install: (if anyone has stock 08 4WD V8 height please share)

Rear 37"
Unfortunately I forgot to do before measurements so I don't have lift numbers.


The Parts
Note: I moved the front spring seats to the upper notch prior to install. Also didn't install the UCA's

Front Shock Comparison - A little taller

Rear Shock comparison - The TRD's are a bit taller

Front Shock Lower Mount Comparison - TRD is larger with thicker eyes

Front Shock Lower Mount Comparison - TRD is 1/8" - 1/16" wider

Rear Upper Links - TRD Eyes are thicker

Rear Upper Shock Mount - TRD is much larger

Rear Spring Comparison - TRD is slightly thicker and has 1 more coil

Panhard comparison - TRD is more beefy

Modifying Parts:
PLEASE NOTE! USING A 1" DRILL BIT TO WIDEN THIS HOLE CAN BE VERY DANGEROUS, USE CAUTION!!!!

Alternated between 1-1/8" step bit and 1" regular using light pressure so the bit didn't snag and break my wrist.

It fits! Also note the hole for the alignment tab and resevoir already existed.

The front shock is too wide for the mount. I decided it would be better to trim the shock instead of the mount to retain the mounts original strength.

Gently trim/grind back about 1/16" of material on each side. I tried a grinding wheel, but found the cutting blade in horizonal position worked best.

Fits perfectly now. Be sure to alternate sides when trimming and ensure symmetry

Ride height after completion and test drive. Will grab better shots later...

Thinking of picking up a set of TRD Pro take offs to retrofit on my 06 Sport V6. Though I may have to yank out the XREAS since I have the Sport model.

I went with the Dobinson C59-505 and got 2.5 inches of lift. Basically kept my factory rake.

You can use that as a datapoint and go with something that gives more or less lift.

Can I keep the daystar 2.5 spacer up front with the TRD suspension or will it be too high? If I take off the front spacer i'm afraid it wont be high enough. Any input appreciated.

What rear springs are you going with

I'm keeping the rear the exact same. Currently using Tokico springs and shocks from a 2013 FJ cruiser with the Daystar 1.5 spacer.

TRD Pro kit works on the 4th gen also. Very slight modification required. Lower bushing on the front shocks needs to be shaved down a hair and some people say the hole in the upper shock mount needs to be opened up slightly but otherwise it's bolt in and go. It lifts the 4th gen more than the 5th gen also right out of the box. Stock 5th gen front coilovers swapped into a 4th gen lifts the front about an inch so this should lift the front of a 4th gen about 1.5" - 2"

Do the 5th gen TRD Pro UCA's fit the 4th gen (v8 xreas).
Lots of sellers including the UCA's.. most retrofit's are reusing the OEM 4th Gen UCA, and my OEM is probably worn at 190k miles.

5th gen upper control arms are a direct fit for the 4th gen. Many people are doing the same as you and using them to replace worn out 4th gen control arms.

These are the only two I've taken since I finished the project, will get it cleaned up and do some more one of these days. Don't have current/final measurements in front of me, but I recall it being just under 1" rake which put the running boards dead level.

Did u take these pics before or after the front 3/4” toytec spacer was installed?

Btw any tire rubbing with the spacer?

Hello, I just ordered the TRD pro suspension from a Toyota dealer and I was just wondering what I can get away without replacing until later. I see you mention some parts are same/same fit, does that mean that they do not need to be changed?

the 6112 the aftermarket equivalent of the 4Runner TRD Pro shock Bilstein developed for Toyota. So is the 5160.

Why waste time retrofitting when he can just buy the equivalent?

I really don’t like having to drill that 1” hole to the upper mount. Is that front, rear or both?

Rear only. It’s not that big of a deal, you just use 5th gen bushings going forward.
