Fuses

Should I get a high amp fuse (100) or 40 amps is enough?, my thought is that the higher the amps the more energy ill take to brake the fuse but on the other hand more energy will be allowed trough and hence an overload can damage the systems at the end of the connection (fridge or whatnot)
Any thoughts will be welcomed
