4wd not engaging// can't drive unless 4wd shifter is engaged :-(

I've always had the 4wd shifter in neutral when driving normally in 2wd...

so when i went to shift into 4wd i put MAIN shifter into neutral......pushed the 4wd button and then pulled the 4wd shifter into 4-hi.....

nope. that neutral is in fact neutral.
I see that you got it figured out.

I was out wheeling in my first truck. a 1980 chevy LUV. torsion bars cranked, and 235's. HAHA lame. anyway, it was a rough riding truck. we were out bouncing around on a rutted/rocky road, and my passenger knocked the 4wd shifter into neutral.

except, I didn't know it at the time. we ended up coasting/pushing the truck a few miles down to my buddies place. where after a bit of time messing with the clutch cable adjustment, and otherwise trying to figure out WTF, I finally decided to check the 4wd shifter. IN NEUTRAL! damnit!
