5,000 service

I didn't see a specific thread on this when searching. Basically...what's the point if you can check your own fluid levels with a quick visual and dip stick inspection? Rotating the tires makes sense I guess, but I will just wait to do that at 10K.

Is this service interval a legacy thing with the previous oil change interval of 5K, which is now 10K?

For me the most important aspect of the 5K service was nut and bolt check. I asked and watched the service man as he visually inspected suspension parts and driveline components for any problems.
 
because they tell you too and i wanted it noted i did my 5 k check for my warranty purpose.

Bought the only reason why I did. Oh yeah and like was mentioned free car wash!
 
I did my own 5K maintenance including rotating the tires, lubing the propeller shaft joints, checking nuts and bolts and resetting the "maintenance" idiot light on the dashboard. But I keep getting emails and junk mail from Toyota reminding me I need to get my 5,000 maintenance service done. This is because since the dealership didn't do it, there are no notes in the Toyota system to show the work was done.

I called and asked them if they could make a note on their computers so I'd stop getting the emails and junk reminder mail but they said they couldn't since they didn't do the service. I think I'll just drive it down and ask them to check the nuts and bolts, then that should get the 5K service written up in the system.

I used to be anti-tire rotation but I think it's pretty important these days, especially for RWD.
I wouldn't wait for 10k.
No free car wash for me :(
 
lucky folks, at least you can still wash yours. once it gets to december, cant really wash the vehicles anymore up here. door seals get frozen, possible cracked windows, frozen door locks, etc.

hehe, lite dusting of snow yesterday in town finally. as least i won the first snowfall bet.

but man, was the broadway bridge slick as hell, completely frozen over the whole length this morning.
 
I had all mine done for a what the heck mentality. Although they did bend my running boards at the 5k service so they had to get me new ones. You should get them rotated, if you want to keep the tires the lifetime they are intended for. They will start to cup on a 4wd if yours is. Mine are now.....but I don't care cause I want new ones before this winter. I've got almost 26k on mine.

You can go to the Toyota web site and create your own service records under "my vehicles". That is what I have done. Whenever I do an oil change or tire rotation I enter it myself.

Of course I also keep written record in the glove box and keep receipts in a file at home.

The free car wash is highly overrated anyway. But agree the tire rotation is a good idea.

The dealer here rotated the tires and attempted to fix the Entune system (old iPod won't play). They had no idea what to do about it and said my system was up-to-date. I'm not sure how to check that on my own. No car wash, vacuum, or anything else. That lack of service is a reason I drove 170 miles (round trip) to buy somewhere else. I might set up service with out of town trips except winter is setting in and I'd rather not get out if I didn't have to.

Are you saying I should send my wife in for the first service and get her to ask them to "rotate the running boards"? Lol! I had to read this a few times before I realized you meant the tires. But the thought makes me giggle!
