5 speed, J shift tcase shifter install

Hello all, as the title states I have a 5 speed 3.4 with J Shift transfer case. I was out, and when going from 4lo to 4hi, the shifter for the transfer case popped out. Now I was able to limp out of the trail and think I got it installed properly. Does anyone have any photos or videos that show how to re install this properly? There is a spring in there and I want to make sure I got it in correctly. I found this video but wish it showed exactly where the tip of the shifter goes. I may have gotten lucky to put it back in but I think I have it on the wrong side of the spring.

Dont want to take it apart again without knowing where the tip should go. Ive also read that its easier to do when in 4hi?

Any help would be appreciated.

You should be able to move the shifter around while the truck is off... if the spring pushes the TC shifter to the left (into the 2H / 4H alignment), it is correct.

Gotcha. So the top of the shifter on mine goes to the right now, so I definitely have it in on the wrong side of the spring. I have ordered a marlin crawler bushing so I’ll try to fix it and report back.

Anyone else have any tips on installing the transfer case shifter? I feel like I got lucky putting it back together and the marlin crawler bushing arrives tomorrow.

As far as I know, it is in the wrong way right now and makes me nervous for some reason lol.

All you have to do is orientate the shifter so it's on the flat side of the spring. Once it's in, all you have to do is move it slightly back and forth, and it should drop into place. That's how I do mine all the time.

I had to replace the gasket between the shifter cover plate and the transfer case, which required removing the shifter. You can see the orientation of the spring in these pictures.

Here is a crappy picture of when I pulled it:

Here it is after I cleaned up the mating surface. Not sure the orientation of how I am holding it in the picture but you get the idea.

Basically when installed correctly, the spring puts pressure on the left side of the bottom of the shaft, pushing it to the left as others have mentioned.
