The Explorer was FWD until just recently (2011-2019) but the Aviator was never FWD.

Thats true. This latest generation is a lot better than the previous in many ways. I took an Aviator on a business trip when I worked for Ford. It was a vehicle by itself not a reskinned something. I didn' t really care much for it.

I've already given you a lesson on load distribution and why solid rear axles work better for load on uneven surfaces. Not sure we need to cover it again. You don't go off road. So it's not meaningful for you. That's okay. But you bought the wrong car.

You want a car with big tires, you got a truck with extra seats. You bought the wrong car. That's okay. Resale is good. There's a billion crossovers to choose from. In other news - did everyone know that Lincoln was still selling cars? I haven't seen a new Lincoln in a decade. Or at least not one I recognized as a new Lincoln. I kinda assumed they can closed shop.

My buddy tows an Rpod with their expedition EB and it overheats pretty regularly on the hills in Utah in the summer. Engine derates and it loses power. Not enough cooling capacity. I'm not sure if the smaller SUVs with the EB engines have the same issues. Otherwise he generally likes it as a people mover. But not a good tow vehicle.

No "overheating" and didn't derate enough to not successfully compete the cycle. I'm not sure it even derated. It did however pass the test.

Also, what does the "Engine Overtemp" warning mean on the dash? I assumed it meant over temperature. But since we now know that it doesn't go over temperature I'm kinda at a loss for what that means. Can you help?

There is no excuse not to have 4 wheel independent suspension on a truck with only a 5000 pound trailer rating. Especially if it costs $50k like some 4R's do. Regardless of what some people may think here it is the better system for off-roading.

I would love to be educated on the above point. Can you please tell us how a fully independent suspension is a superior solution for most off-road driving? I would love to hear your experiences with that.

There's a guy on another board I belong to, who has an Ecoboost F-150, who can't seem to stop complaining that his Ecoboost can't pull the interstate passes in Utah, on a hot summer day, without overheating. That's apparently towing far less than the truck is rated for...

I'm sure he doesn't know what he's talking about ether.

TFL experienced the same thing with their Powerboost F-150.

But to be fair their Silverado test vehicle also cooked the transmission fluid when towing at altitude, also while towing far less weight than it was 'Rated' for.

I'm not sure who you think you are enlightening with your 'insights'. Go buy your Explorer or Aviator already.

Put a Magnuson supercharger on mine , seems to do just fine, oh and F Ford, I was happy when the wife got rid of her Explorer.

My sister has one. Very nice minivan without a sliding rear door. It's deceptively huge! Like 15" longer than a 4Runner. When parked side by side it makes the 4Runner look small.

Sometimes the sensors read zero when they go past a max point. I did notice that to though. Seems like it's common that the gauge goes to zero when they over heat.

I misread your second part. I have not shopped for an explorer. Lol. I bought an f250 powerstroke in January. Sold it in November. I'm probably done with Fords for a while again. Every decade or so I forget and get another lesson in domestic truck reliability. I did make some $ on the truck even after taxes and all the costs were added in I was about $5k net positive. Crazy truck market.

Happens all the time - in 2012 I bought my first sports car…after a month I realized that it only had two seats and the Ford Fusion came as a 5 seater which was more practical.
I still haven’t sold that sports car but I complain a lot about it’s missing seats and features.

Yet, you bought a '20 4runner... I would think you would know exactly why people buy the 4runner. I could have bought whatever I wanted even at higher price range (x5, Q7, Cayenne) or any of the American options in the 50k price range.

Yet, I bought my '21 4runner fully aware of it's outdated drivetrain and features... So, why did you? There were plenty of other options with way better drivetrain and feature in 2020.

He’s not trying to hurt your feelings. He’s just saying the next vehicle will need to be massively upgraded. That chip on your shoulder is getting awfully heavy. Might want to address it.

I agree. The 4Runner is way, way behind other vehicles on tech, safety, and options. Toyota either needs to drop the 4Runner or upgrade it to a decent standard that compares to just the basic competitor’s vehicles. It will be very interesting to see what they do.
