5th gen brakes - impressive emergency stopping

Had to lock up the brakes yesterday when a bonehead decided to make a left hand turn in an intersection at a very inappropriate time. It all happened to quick, but the KO2's roared and the 4r came to a stop in a VERY short distance.
I did not feel like the front was doing most of the braking, (I know it was) rather the entire vehicle tracked perfectly straight, The nose dive that I was so critical of initially did not seem to be an issue under heavy braking (??? again, everything happened so fast, I'm sure it was present) Regardless, I stopped in a very short distance. It was surprising

The ABS was not the typical chunk-chunk-chunk on the pedal that I'm used to, but rather a much, MUCH faster version. I cant wait to drive this thing in the snow.

Later that night I was almost run over on a crosswalk with my dog, and then I had to stop for a moose on the highway on the way home. I decided to stay in the rest of the evening.

I agree that the brakes are impressive in an emergency stop...my only complaint with the braking system is how it seems like it goes into "emergency stop" mode for anything over approx 60% braking...example: I was approaching a traffic light at about 50mph as it turned yellow...I thought about going thru for a second, but then decided to stop because of a car that might try to turn left in front of me (coming from opposite direction)... I did not need to stop as quickly as possible, but I did need more brakes than used for 99% of driving...as soon as I got the brake pedal beyond what i would consider to be 50% braking, the computer took over and went into "max braking" mode..I had to release the brakes and re apply lightly in order to not stop 50 feet short of the light. Glad no one was following me closely.

I'm a light braker / cruiser because I normally have dogs in the back. I will certainly keep this in mind Tom. I can definitely see what you are saying.

I'm not so sure I intended to stop yesterday, rather I hopped on the brakes and I was stopped before I knew what the hell happened. I was also very fortunate nobody was following me closely.

It's not the force you apply to the brake pedal nor is it the distance you depress the brake pedal. It is the speed of actuation that brings in the brake assist.

You can slowly depress the brake pedal all the way and come to a nice, unassisted normal stop. Try it.

Now try a panic brake condition where you depress the pedal extremely fast, like twitch muscle fast. It takes very little length of depression before the braking system determines you are in panic mode and you need to stop. real. fast. I have explained the technical operation of the braking system along with the logic behind it before. People's eyes glazed over after the first sentence.

Got it.. I did very quickly go from light throttle to 50% plus on the brakes... To me it seemed a bit too aggressive on taking over... But I can see how that may be best for mass production.

Thanks 1engineer. Brake assist is the term I was looking for. I wanted to do some reading about this.

This same EXACT sequence of events happened to me too - took me by surprise the first time.
