5th Gen Calipers

Phil - your brakes are looking good. I wish I would've painted mine before hand...

Thanks. I'm very pleased with the final outcome, and can't be happier with the performance :thumb3:. I not only did the 5th gen upgrade with Akebono ceramic pads, but I also upgraded to stainless steel braided lines all around (front brakes, rear brakes, and what I call the "middle" brake lines that run from close to the rear axle towards the middle of the truck.

... Ill probably do what you did and do them 1 by 1 and knock that out.

The one wheel at at time trick worked well for me. Because I live in a residential area without a driveway or garage, I have to keep a low profile, or someone will complain or call the cops.

I kept my work area neat, and had most of my tools in the truck itself. I had a large metal pan next to where I was working, and any tool that I need to keep handy, I put in the metal pan.

I even positioned my floor jack so that most of the jack itself was under the truck too, and when I removed a tire, I kept it upright and leaning against the side of the truck.

The idea is not to attract attention. Keep everything neat and low profile. I was also pleasant. When I wasn't actively doing something, I greeted my neighbors as they walked by with a smile and a pleasant "hello. Nice day."

If it looks like I'm changing a tire or something, people will let it go.

If it looks like I'm doing major work, if I have all 4 tires off and the truck on jack stands, then they will complain.

I used wheel chocks to block the front and back of the wheel diagonally across from the wheel I was working on. I also left one of the wheels chocked after I had removed all of the brake calipers and brought them inside to paint them.

I had some cardboard, and lots of paper towels, some empty gatorade bottles to avoid getting brake fluid everywhere, and a garbage bag for trash. If I made a mess, neighbors might have gotten upset.

I always go over my work area when I'm done and pick up all debris -- even if it's not mine. Don't give anyone a reason to complain or call the cops.

Also, if anyone had a comment about the work, I usually just agreed with them, politely. No need to explain or start a conversation. If they asked what I was doing, I usually said something like, I'm removing this tire to make sure it's seated properly, and checking out the brake behind it. I just want to make sure everything is OK and rides well. It's not a big deal... and I left it at that.

I have to do this upgrade as well and was wondering if anyone has the part numbers for the 5th gen rotors for the fronts and the 4th gen rotors for the rear.
I don't have it handy, but use any of the online parts catalog (or Amazon) and look up front rotors, and front and rear calipers for a 2010 4Runner limited. Then change the vehicle to a 4th gen (like a 2008 V8 limited) and look up the rear rotors.
That will get you the part numbers. The brake pads are identical between the 4th and 5th gens, so you can use either.

RockAuto does not have one of the front calipers in stock right now, so I have to wait till they stock them before I order everything.

I used partstrain.com and was very pleased with their cost and service. Check around with other online vendors. You might find them.

How much brake fluid do we need to buy to flush the system?
I had 5 12 oz bottles on hand (don't ask me why... I don't know), and I used four of them... but I think that was overkill. The person who posed that you need about 2 (12 oz) bottles is probably right.

on the other hand, I already had the fluid, and it allowed a very thorough flush and bleed, so I was sure I had clean fluid and had gotten all of the air out.

I used an empty 2 liter soda bottle to catch my old brake fluid. With a drill, a made hole in the top of the cap that was the right size so that my bleeder hose fit through the hole, but was a snug fit. I also drilled a smaller breather hole in the cap. Stainless steel speed bleeders (about $60 for a set of 4) made the work easy.

I started by flushing through a bottle of DOT 4 fluid (cheaper), then I switched to Synthetic DOT 5.1 fluid. It has a higher boiling point.

DON'T use DOT 5 fluid. It's not compatible with DOT 3 or DOT 4 fluids, but DOT 5.1 is compatible. See wikipedia if you want more info.

Thanks pjbrownva ^^

I ended up getting rebuilt calipers - 5th gen 4Runner front and back and then new rotors (5th gen 4Runner spec for the fronts and 4th gen 4Runner spec for the rears), Stoptech stainless steel braided lines from Rockauto and Motul synthetic Dot 4 fluid from Amazon.

The calipers and rotors and pads I got from a local shop that specializes in rebuilt calipers - Midwest Calipers and got them powder coated in red and then clear coated. They turned out great.

See parts below:

Questions about brake lines

Lots of good info here. I'm in the process of preparing for some brake work. I'm planning to do 5th gen calipers all around, 5th gen front rotors and 4th gen rear rotors. I also want to replace my lines with Stainless Steel, but I'm a little confused on what's what. I'm an auto mechanic noob, so this will be my first time with this kind of brake job.

Here's what I'm understanding: There are 6 lines to replace (3 per side). 2 on the front and 4 rear. On the rear there are the 2 going from the calipers to the axle, and then 2 going from the axle to (?). Is this correct?

I'm seeing options for SS brake lines from RockAuto, and also some extended SS lines from Toytec. However, I'm not sure what replaces what.
RockAuto has CENTRIC 950.44507 StopTech Stainless Steel for the Rear (950.44007 Front). Are these rears the caliper lines or the others?
Also, Toytec's Extended Rear lines (Part Number:FJRL14). Are they for the caliper, or the other part?

My assumption would be the Extended lines are not the ones going to the caliper from the axle, since those two parts aren't moving away from each other (hopefully).
Once again, I'm a noob to all this, the only thing I've done with my brakes so far is replace the pads. Any help is much appreciated.

P.S. I failed to mention that I plan to install a Toytec Ultimate lift at the end of the year. Thus the desire to get the extended lines.

Ordered 5th generation Centric rotors and OEM 5th gen pads. I'm leaning towards 5th gen Napa calipers because of the lifetime warranty....anybody have any feedback on Napa vs Centric?

How much did that cost you for all of it through them ? I like the powder option all in the same place . Curious on pricing thanks!
Here is what it cost me:

  1. 5th gen 4Runner calipers - front - $95 x 2
  2. 5th gen 4Runner calipers - rear - $85 x 2
  3. 5th gen 4Runner Rotors - WBR - front - $87.5 x 2
  4. 4th gen 4Runner Rotors - WBR - rear - $67.5 x 2
  5. 5th gen 4Runner pads - Akebono ceramic - front - $95.5
  6. 5th gen 4Runner pads - Advics ceramic - rear - $69.5
  7. Powder coating and clear coating all four calipers - $350 - I think this was more than it should have been
  8. Core charge - $150 because I did not return back the equivalent calipers as I bought

All prices above are in Canadian $ which is 1 CAD = 78 cents US

Grand total came to $1,439.05 CAD

Sub'd for future ref, I think my brakes are starting to experience the pulsing everyone is talking about so I'll be looking into upgrading my brake setup soon.

Also my question is if all of these 4th gen 4runner's are all sending back their core calipers as Rock auto thinks they're 5th gen calipers. Are the new one's that Rock auto is sending out are they in fact the 48mm piston sized 5th calipers? Or are they just re-manufacturing the 4th gens and sending them out thinking they are the 5th gens?

Has anyone with the new caliper recently purchased care to take a measurement of the piston sizes?

Cool deal thanks and yeah the powder coats definitely more than it should be but it does it look sweet . Thanks for the info

And thanks to the op this was very helpful ahve everything ordered . FYI a dealer on eBay sells oem fifth gen pads and rotors for right under 200$ shipped I went that route because of longevity have seen plenty of vehicles go close to 100k miles on original pads and rotors . My Tacoma has 109 on it now and is just now needing pads .

I contacted Midwest after seeing your post, had the same prices quoted to me in USD. waaaay too much for powdercoating if you as me. looks like a nice job but its the cost of the caliper itself. i'll be painting mine.

where is everyone getting the rear axle SS lines from? i can't find the PN 5500FJ-AP on all-pro's website anymore.

When you search for that part # on the mfg website, what is listed has an R in the part #. I thought the R stood for Rubber but it doesn't-it stands for Rear.

AllPro has the rears, equiv to 950.44507 listed below, which are the 5500FJ-AP-R (-F are the fronts)
I figured the R stood for Rear, not axle.
I remember finding the 5500FJ-AP on their site about a month ago, just can't now.

I think the 5500FJ-AP-R are for the axle. If the picture is correct, there's no banjo fitting to attach to the caliper.

rock on with that observation! all the other centric/stoptech pics for front/rear have the banjo fitting. i like the way you think. thanks. hopefully i'm about done over researching.

Just ordered from RockAuto

I had to order some parts from my sisters/Dads truck so I went on and got all the parts I need that were in my cart.
Still need to get CENTRIC 141.44288. There was one left in stock this morning, but now it's gone.

Also got some brake lines to order from All-Pro.
