5th gen CV axles in 4th gen V-8??

Torn boot, weighing pros and cons of re-booting vs new axles. Since I've got 17 yrs and 115k miles on my '04 4Runner V8 4WD, I'm leaning towards replacing the axles instead of just the boots.

I read one thread where it was mentioned that 5th gen CV axle is a direct fit for the 4th gen, even though the parts #s are different, that was the only thread I could find on this info. The appeal of that is that a 5th gen axles are about $100/axle less than a 4th gen axle.

Has anyone else gone down this road, compared the two, cups sizes, lengths, bearings, etc. and made a determination?

My concern is that the axles for the 03-09 4Runners may have had a little more beef in them due to the V-8. Would hate to find out the hard way and be stuck with an extra set of axles.

The 4th gen axles aren't beefed up for the V8.

According to RCV the same aftermarket axle part number fits:
FJ Cruiser ('07-'14)
4 Runner ('03-Present)
Tacoma ('05-Present)
Lexus GX460 ('10-'13)
Lexus GX470 ('03-'09)

IMO rebooting is fine with that low of mileage. These CV's last a very long time as long as they stay greased.

Yup they are the same. Only difference is the OEM boots are different. The 5th gen boots are better designed, but if you are buying aftermarket they are usually the same between both 4th/5th gen.

Ive seen them used so they fit, as stated its just boot differences.

That said, I have rebooted my OEM cv's twice on each side.. with 162k on them in the last 9 years. They are fine.

Hello. Old thread new question.
I've got an 03 v8. Pretty sure my CV axles are out of grease by since being torn for so long, no clunking though.
Anyway, obviously it's time for new ones.
Now that trakmotive has been out for a while, has there been any significant upgrades to the boot integrity. Do the 5th Gen CV axles last longer in general?

I rebuilt my CVs and used Dobinsons boots that are designed for lifted 4Runners. With your miles, rebooting them makes the most sense.

Update, since this is getting bumped. So 3.5 yrs ago I did swap out to new (5th gen) CVs, along with new LCAs, front hubs/bearings and seals, all 4th gen and OEM. Too much wrenching for my skill level, so I had a local indy mechanic do it. IMO, if I'm removing some parts anyways, then I just assume R&R with new OEM as at that point as I have zero plans to sell this 4Runner. 20k miles later and no issues noted. I kept my original OEM CVs and will probably reboot them myself as a project someday. Will likely explore Dobinson boots, or 5th gen boots, on those old CVs due to the comments above about them being superior.

Thanks for the update and it's great to know with confidence that this update can boast reliable, OEM love!

These CVs are extremely durable! I drove mine with torn inner boots for 3 years figuring I would just upgrade them to RCV when they started clicking. Well, they never did and I rebooted them. When I cleaned off the old grease, there was zero wear. They have been great for months so far including some mild wheeling here in CO.

Just replaced both CV axles in my '03 V8/AWD with used 5th gens purchased off ebay. Also did the hubs/bearings and one knuckle seal and front differential seal.

43430-60083 4th Gen Fitment Confirmation

Had a hard time finding confirmation on fitment of the new 5th gen front axles on the 4th gen, I just installed the 43430-60083 axle on the passenger side of my 03 V8, no problems. Changed the seals too, that’s a pain. Used the 90311-47013 on the differential side and the 90316-72001 on the wheel knuckle side. Will be doing the driver side at some point, but the boots are fine on that side for now. Made the mistake of having non-Toyota axles installed 12,000 miles ago, passenger boots done.
