I am sorry to ask a question on the most beaten topic of this forum, but after searching and reading pages of info, I still do not have a real good answer...

I am new to the 4R world. I had a 07 FJ with the Toytec Ultimate lift on it. I really liked the lift, but was always wanting more articulation. The adjustability was great at the beginning to get everything level, but after initial set up, I never adjusted again.

My inclination is to get the a toytec 3" kit with the Bilstein 5100s. I do not think that I will push this vehicle as hard as the FJ and I THINK the articulation and lift this kit will provide will keep me happy.

Better kits to consider without breaking the bank? Or stick with the Toytec?

Icon extended travel coilovers will give you a little more extension, when paired with aftermarket UCAs. Other than that, you basically have all of the same mid to long travel options as the FJ, minus the aftermarket fender options.
 
Not getting many nibbles on this fishing trip...
Anybody have a better option than the Toytec option in this same price range? Or is it a matter of "have to spend more, to get more"?
 
many people may be thinking what I am after reading your post, which is:

you had an FJ with a lift and should have some knowledge as to the products on the market and the regularity of you actually using them. further, as you mentioned in your post, there are many, many, threads on lifts, people's opinions, pictures, likes, dislikes, etc. the information is out there, it's up to you to go through it all.

There are similar lifts for similar money, nothing really providing better articulation for similar money. I'm having a tough time understanding what you are asking.

Do you want better performance? You mentioned better articulation, but then said you were happy with the lift on your FJ and that you wouldn't push the 4Runner as hard as the FJ.

Do you just want to know that the lift you are buying is still competitive for the money or are their better options? The lift(s) you mention are still competitive, good buys. Other than more articulation (which you can't have for similar money) is there something you were hoping for? Better load carrying ability?

Yes - if you want significantly better performance you will have to pay for it. Like all performance upgrades for anything mechanical, the most cost effective upgrade will be the initial, basic step up. More advanced lifts will cost lots more money and deliver less and less improvement (over the next cheapest alternative) as you move up the quality / cost scale.

I HAD an FJ, but now have a 4R. I also have not bought a lift for 6 years. I think that my choice is a sound one based on searching and reading, but wondered if anybody had any new insights or info to add that May be specific to the 4R but not the FJ.
I think that you guys are soooo sensitive to any question regarding lift that you just automatically treat it like somebody who is lazy and has not searched. I have and I still have questions.
 
How about this: are there better lifts for the money than the Totec system? My research says, no. Good assessment?

People get that way when they see someone beating a dead horse. ;)
The base ($900) system, not the ultimate. I had the ultimate before and found that I adjusted to begin with and then never touched it again.

That one is fine, as long as you don't want to adjust it on the vehicle. I would add a set of UCAs if you want to obtain decent caster angle, but it is not required.

How about this then:
Suspensions have not changed much in the past 50 years. What you bought six years ago is pretty much what they have now with minor changes and real close to what I bought 30 years ago.

You mentioned "break the bank" in your first post. What is your bank? Lifts run from a few hundred dollars for a spacer lift to two grand for a decent suspension up to ten grand and above for a really sweet custom setup. Just like everything else and just like [MENTION=96409]Canazes9[/MENTION] above told you above the more you spend the better it is generally.

What [MENTION=48772]Jesse1983[/MENTION] said holds true also. There are literally hundred's of threads and thousands of pictures here on lifts, including how-to's and step by step instructions. These guys are really good at this and are as helpful as they come and knowledgeable as well.

You asked a very general question and implied you had some prior knowledge of lifts. They answered it in the same general way. Just remember nobody can read your mind and know how much you want to spend or what you will be doing with it.

Last point: You mentioned "better articulation" in your post a few times. You do realize that lifting a vehicle or changing suspensions does not change the location of the bump stops right? Your wheels will still only travel a certain distance up and down because you have not changed suspension geometry. Y You need to research removing sway bars and long travel kits if you want to get a little better articulation.

Sensitive? I think not.

Engineer - if you need to go into a detailed answer proving you are not sensitive, well...
Let's bury the hatchet buddy. Grudges do not suit intelligent men. I am sorry for our prior disagreement and hope that we can go forward and exchange ideas and get along. I can be hotheaded at times and I was previously. I apologize.
