5th Gen Retains True Roots; New Pathfinder NOT

Nissan has long needed a competitor for the Highlander since the Murano platform is too small. With the new Pathfinder design, it looks like they got a winner for that intended market.

Looks like they turned it into a "Highlander." It's quite possible that the Xterra will be their "true" 4wd offering and the Pathfinder will now be a competitor to the Highlander. Ford went the same direction with their new Explorer. The crossover sales numbers don't lie and that's where the most money is being made right now.

They brought a lot of the luxo features from the JX (360 camera) threw in the dual headrest dvd (I Like!), 3rd row seating with decent legroom (Sorry 4Runner, ur no legroom 3rd is virtually useless), and many other luxo features.

It'll be interesting to see the actual suv. Hopefully the interior won't feel like cheaps 'r us like the present Pathfinder.

Pathfinder, Explorer, Durango....looks like they all copied each other with their own little changes to keeps their model unique.
 
It has been reported in several car magazines that the 5th gen 4runner will most likely be the last body on frame version. It will then be a cross over like most of of the others.
 
I wouldn't consider a pathfinder over a 4runner anyways. My dad bought an 03 pathfinder, had it for 10 years. Babied it (changed oil every 3k on the dot, used 91octane only)

10 years later at 120k it started eating oil, and the bottom was all rusted out. He compared it to his brothers 03 tundra, and that thing had no rust at all...

I think the Toyota is a much better car overall then any Nissan

Doubtful. Toyota has the benefit of having two mid size SUVs, Highlander and 4Runner. Plus, remember that the 4Runner is a Land Cruiser overseas, they will not build a Land Cruiser on a car chassis.

it drove through that tiny little puddle all by itswelf without getting stuck. even with an fwd/awd drive terrain.!

kinda see that as being doubtful.

toyota still has,

the tacoma, tundra, 4runner and FJ which are body on frame plus the land cruiser in canada.

also has the lexus gx and lx which are also based on body on frame tech.

over seas they have the hilux, foretuner, prado and land cruiser prado which are also body on frame.


localized markets in north america may see a "slightly" larger demand for unibody *cough* suvs *cough* but internationally there is and always will be a demand for rugged body on frame "true" suvs.


as other companies pull out of the market, toyota will gain the customers that they lose, who want a true body on frame suv that is dependable and capable.

I am pretty sure one was either Motor Trend or Car and Driver. I think the other was Four Wheel and Off Road. I get so many magazines it is hard to keep track and it was several months ago. I will search their web site to see if I can find it. It was not a big article just a paragraph. One of the magazines stated it was sad because the 4runner was one of the first real suv's
 
I don't get it - If i wanted a crossover i'd get a Subaru - this thing looks like they directly copied an Outback.
