62,330 Miles Dunlops still have good treadwear. Time to dump em'?

Does anyone have thoughts on when to swap out the Dunlops. Went to costco ready to buy a set of LXT MS2's tire guy talked me out of it.

He showed me the mfg suggested wear strip was well below the tread and the federal minimal tread requirements strip were even further away.

The tires are 4.75 yrs old work well... Any strong arguments here to change em out>?

Only change them out if you feel you have to. If you feel yourself slipping, or you want a more aggressive tire, or whatever the reason is. If they still perform acceptably (I was never a fan of those tires to begin with) and don't show signs of dry rotting, it may not be a bad idea to hang on to them for another year.

Wait till you get to the wear indicators. I bought my 4runner used and the previous owner put on the same sire and they still look new! I honestly cant wait for the wear indicators so I can get new tires.

I could get another year out of my tires but I am having A/T 3's put on them as I type this because I am planning on buying a season pass to do some serious skiing this winter. Otherwise I would have kept them. So if all youre doing is staying on dry pavement then why spend the money?

Or you could buy them now and just put them on when your current tires wear out. I usually have my next set of tires in storage ready to put on mostly to insulate myself from price and supply fluctuations, which I believe will become acute in the near term.

Even though the tires aren't too the wear bars I would personally look into replacing them soon. They are almost 5 years old and even if they don't show signs of dry rot the tire may be fatigue from years of heat cycles and UV exposure.

I don't think that those tires are that great to begin with, so I would look for any excuse to replace them. But then again, I want/expect/need good snow and occasional offroad/sand performance, something the Dunflops are not designed/equipped for. Almost 5 years is a good run, so if it is financially cool for you do do so, then I say upgrade!

I ran my OE set 80k and they still passed the tread test. If your comfortable with the less that great traction I say run them the course and then get the new ones.

Texas has great weather, the occasional torrential rain storm, but beyond that we are always sunny and dry. The truck spends 99.99% on road, but in the rain storms there is always some minor slippage when taking hard turns from stop.

I'll wait to see if I get a bonus this year, if I do then I'll drop the money on the LTX MS2's everyone seems to love them. Also, this might give me a 1/2 inch lift if I go with 265/70/17's. I've read no rubbing on a stock sport setup.

i have a 2005 model with the original tire in it. tire is still good and i'm almost close to the threadwear indicator. I've had the tires for 8 years already and i think I can use it still until next summer. if you only have 4.75 years old tire, that is still good for another 2 years until you reach the indicator. I have the Michellin tire and I am now around 83K miles.

I guest it depends on your financial situation or how much those tires annoy you, but I think I may know how you feel. I have micheline latitude tour HP's. They seem to handle well, but maybe too well, it tramlines so much that it is not that fun to drive. The tires were bloody expensive too. Now i just have to wait until they wear out.

Most folks just wait until they get close to the thread wear indicator to buy new tires, but if you want a new set of tires then by all means go for it. You can always sell the old ones to someone looking for a cheap set to use for a year or so.

Do yourself a favor and go do some research how long tires last. Usable tread doesn't have anything to do with how safe it is to drive on those tires once they're over 4-5 years old. For all you know that tire sat at the factory for years before you purchase it, it could be 12 years old and rotting away and you would never know it.

It never ceases to amaze me how careless people can be when it comes to the only thing that contacts the road. Tires are the only thing keeping you in control and yourself, your family and other drivers on the road safe. All the ABS, all the air bags, all the traction control and every other safety nanny feature doesn't mean squat if your 8 year old tire blows out on the highway.

you are right, tires that old can blow out at any time. i researched it too before. i checked the side of the tire and it was manufactured in mid 2005. it was actually around 7.5 years old. i don't drive it much in the highway since I use backroads all the time. Maybe next year if we are planning a long drive, I'll have it changed before the trip. I'm looking into the tax free day before I buy one.
