650lb vs 700lb Coils?

quick and possibly dumb question.
i currently have stock front end and am buying my suspension soon. debating between the 650 and the 700.
i have full intentions of getting just a c4fab slim front bumper and a winch in the next 12 months.
which springs should i get? will i need the 700's once i get the bumper and winch?
if so, will i have an negative effect or issues running the 700's with a stock bumper for awhile?
thank you!

If you are sticking to just a lightweight bumper + synth line winch you should be ok with 650lb springs. If you look at my config a few posts above I ran that for about a year before switching to 700lb springs. It worked fine but after adding about 100+ additional pounds with a second battery and compressor I had to use a heavier spring.

Well, here I am justify and searching again. Looking into Icons with a 650lb spring vs a 700lb spring. Any input from anyone else these days? It's been a mind battle trying to figure if the digressive valving would be better with a softer spring for the Icons. Mainly liking the Icons over the Fox because I read you can adjust them on the vehicle I can go up to 3" if I wanted too.

My bumper is around 140lbs with a Smittybuilt winch and synthetic line around 60lbs according to 4WheelParts.
They're still doing great but I just feel the 6112's and 700lb springs isn't cutting it for me comfort wise anymore. Maybe its the weight I have, maybe it's the valving, or maybe I'm just ready for something new.
I'd look into Kings but I just simply don't want external reservoirs.

as said before why not radflo? I just bought some radflo 2.5s for my front since a 6112 was leaking on me. I like that they come with 650lb springs, can be adjusted on the vehicle, and rebuildable just like the other ones you are looking at. just throwing out another option. :hippie:

I'll second the Radflo reccomendation. I just put them on all round. 2.5's front and back. No Resi's. I am using a 700# coil and am very happy with it. I had Toytec Boss on with a 650# coil on before and the Radflo is much better.

Y'all have me browsing them pretty hard now. I like the sound of progressive valving. I think I'm hesitant on the icons deep down because the 6112s are digressive, and I can feel every bump in the road. Although the harder drops feel nice when I get the chance to take it off road.
The price point looks nice on them too.
The rear 2.5 radflos put it almost at the same price point as the icon front (2.5) and rears (2.0) I was looking at, but it's nice the rear radflos would be 2.5s.

Both of you clearly like them. Is it pretty smooth on the road overall?

This is a really subjective area we're delving into here. I hesitate to say you'll love it because well you understand.
Also, I am 5 years, 4 suspension setups, (including stock) and 75,000 miles away from stock so my perspective is pretty hazy at this point. And I have not run the setups that you have.
All that being said, I am very impressed with the Radflo Eibach/Dobinson's setup that I am running. However, I arrived where I am now trying to solve some issues I had that are specific to my setup. My setup is listed below in my signature as well as all my weight influencing mods so I won't go into it.
I came from a very worn out, over weighted, probably abused Toytec Boss setup. The fronts were cranked up way to much to get the lift I needed and carry the weight. One rear strut was destroyed and I was running on a OEM replacement generic shock for about 8 months. (Long story) The coils barely kept the rear end up empty and weren't carrying the weight of being fully loaded at all.
So in adding the C4 dual swingout I had to radically change the setup front and rear. So here we are at the current setup. It's a much more smooth and controlled setup. Off road it's a dream. The Dobinson's progressive rear coils are truly amazing.
However, all that being said these are shocks/struts designed for high speed off road use. And choosing different sized coils made by a different manufacturer would change things dramatically. Let alone the specifics of rig setup.
You asked if I can feel every little bump in the road. I would answer yes and no. It's a truck with about 700# of extra weight bolted on empty. Lot's more fully loaded. I didn't really try to get it to run perfect on the pavement empty. (Much better than any Jeep I have ever been in though) That being said I think it does great. But loaded up at higher speeds than before holy s$@t is it a big difference.
So being a purpose built rig that is a daily driver as well, I think it balances those needs well. But it's no Caddy.
So I think I've done a good job at not answering your question, which was unintended. The best answer I have is this. Live anywhere near Denver? We can go for a drive

I just had Accutune spec out the Fox 2.5 coil overs for my Pro. They suggested 650# spring to give me the best overall ride and off road performance. I'll be adding either a C4 or SSO slimline bumper and which. Now if I add anymore weight then that I may have to throw on some 700# at that time. I'm also going with DSC with thier custom tuning for the best ride I can get. Someone above mentioned that you can't adjust then on the truck. Totally False. Thru can be adjusted like any other CO.

i'm on 650's without the full bumper + winch. if i was going to add those I would go 700's. Would need too much preload with the 650's.

I've the Kings with 550s, and after adding the SSO bumper and a warn 10k winch I've major nose dive on braking and lifting on takeoff. I have the 650s that will go on next weekend. I'm running RCI Alum skids and RCI sliders. I've had to dial in a ton of preload to get it close to even, but still a major rake. Cant wait to get the 650s on.

Ha, I understand very well.
I appreciate your answers.
I think in the end I'll give the Radflos a go along with 700s. I've been reading about them and most people seem to like them. I'm not sure if they're the underdog compared to Icon or King because that's all I really see around here. But I'd like to try them out along with progressive suspension. And not have to tear down my whole setup to do adjustments.Total Automotive has a deal going on right now too, perfect timing.
Rear springs sound interesting to mess with but I'll save that for another day. The ToyTec rears did great on some trails I've done. Decent on the road but better when I've got some weight in the trunk.
Thanks for the offer! I live in Houston. Sure would love to visit Colorado one day though. It's first on my list.

So again what systems are you referring to that you have to tear down to adjust??????

6112's.

Sometimes depending on the resi fittings it can be near impossible to adjust preload with the coilover on the vehicle. Plus if the adjustment collar jumps the threads you'll be removing it from the vehicle to fix:cry2:

Gotcha. I know some people have did you can't adjust the Fox COs on the vehicle but you definitely can. Thanks.

Definitely the 6112s. Great shock but I've lost count of how many times I've torn it down and put it all back together. But it taught me how and that's fun.

Ouch. Didn't get those so I'll just have to hope the latter doesn't happen.

apparently i loosened the pinch bolt too much. just supposed to crack it from what I was told... But FOX says "use a spring compressor"

I just installed kings this weekend. I’m coming from Icons and had added a lot of weight to my rig. I had those maxed out with preload. I ordered the kings from Filthy Motorsports and went through the whole process with weights and pics. They recommended #600 springs, which sounded light to me, but I’m trusting an expert to figure that part out. At zero preload, the front was in the weeds (21.5” fender to hub) after a few emails, they recommend I take them up 4 turns. I did 8 and it brought the front up to 23.5”. With barely an inch of thread, I could go quite a bit farther, but I don’t need to. I may even come down a bit, depending on how it settles, because I thing they performed better.

What I don’t understand is why a lot of folks are at #650 - #700, Still needing preload. My bumper is on the light side, but I still have batteries, skids, winch, the whole Magilla.

I'm pretty sure it has a lot to do with the free length of the spring as well. They are probably using a 14" spring. Just my guess though, could be wrong.

I find this confusing as well. Hopefully someone can shed some light on it. I think you're correct about the 14" coil on the king setup.
For reference my coils are 3" ID x 14" L x 700# with very little pre load

I attached a picture, you can just barely see the exposed threads above the collar at the top. Sorry about the quality. It's a blizzard today, I'll get a better pic later

I say go with the 700# coils. I have 650#x14 coils with hardly any additional weight, and to me it rides and handles perfect. Zero preload. So if you have a setup that allows for preload adjustment, keep that in mind as to how stiff it will feel.

Edit.. LOL, I had just read the 1st page before I posted. It looks like this has been addressed. Still, I say go with 700's.
