**** GUYS PLEASE VOTE AS I WOULD LIKE TO PRESENT THIS DATA TO TOYOTA AT SOME POINT. FOR THEM TO TAKE THIS SERIOUSLY, WE WOULD NEED FEW HUNDREDS VOTE ON MANY FORUMS ****

Hi guys, let's say that hypothetically the 6th Generation 4Runner would show up with a selection of four engines. Which is the one you would choose.

3.5 litres V6 - 278 HP / 265 LBS (Tacoma)
4.0 litres V6 - 270 HP / 278 LBS (5th Gen 4Runner)
4.6 litres V8 - 386 HP / 367 LBS (Lexus LS 460 RWD)
5.7 litres V8 - 381 HP / 401 LBS (Thundra)

Please do not turn that thread in a "It is fine as it is, Toyota will never go for bigger engine or there will be no more 4Runner" ... we have other threads on the subject.

The mandate of this thread is to get the general engine related feeling of an active crowd owning 4Runner. If we have enough answers, I will post the same thread to other Toyota's forum and provide the result to Toyota.

I read too many times that people would love other engine options for that platform, and it's time we put number on this.

I'll vote first.

I just LOVE that truck. But there is something that always haunt me deep in my mind ... this truck is a bit shy on power. I can live with it, but I would trade it in an eye blink if a V8 engine option would be available on the next platform.

Hydrogen fuel cell with independent electric motors front and rear.

If I can't get that I would want the tubro desiel the rest of the world gets in the Prado or LC.

The 4.6L would more likely be the 310hp version.

That said, I'd want the turbo 3.5L from the LS500.

Voted for the 4.6, but I would prefer it tuned somewhere between the ls and gx variants. Wife has an ls460 f sport and the torque curve sucks imo, it doesnt have the v8 feeling I desire down low. Now wind it out and it rewards you up top pulling awsome to redline, not exactly how id want a 4runner. The gx4.6 with intake and exhaust would prolly be a out perfect.

415/442?! [emoji43]❤️[emoji1373]
Yes. Yes please.
Toyota definitely needs to put an engine in the 4Runner/Tacoma that competes with the Explorer/F-150's impressive ExoBoost 2.7 and 3.5 engines.
Not sure about a 10 speed auto in a 4Runner, but I'm not 100% old school; why not.
I'll be surprised if it isn't the 3.5 that's in the Tacoma
I think everyone will be.

4.6 would be great

5 7 too heavy

4.0 would be optimal if they re mapped the throttle sensor. My 2nd Gen towing a trailer with 4wheelers has more response than my 4runner completely empty, so something is a bit screwy somewhere

As a previous tundra owner, that 5.7 mated to a 8 speed was a beast. I love that motor, and my tundra got the same mileage as my current 4runner...go figure.

I can still dream.......

That would be a huge mistake for Toyota. Go take a 3rd gen Tacoma for a long drive and enjoy all that new 3.5L Atkinson/6sd technology....oh and make sure the trans is in S mode and you have the ECT button pushed in.

Ha, I'll take the old technology 4Liter/5sd all day long!

Actually the Service Weight (no oil or fluids) of the 1UR-FE is about 479lbs, the 3UR-FE is about 483lbs. So not that much heavier or larger than a 1UR-FE engine.

4.0L is a solid engine, the Dual-VVTi units were a good improvement over the single VVTi units. They just need to tune the transmission/drivetrain mapping to reflect it's potential.

They're sticking with the 3.5L 2GR-FKS. It will probably be exactly the same drivetrain with the same transmission, differentials ect. The engine has the potential, but it's tuning/mapping and the drivetrain it's mated to is just a piss poor choice from Toyota. If anything the 4Runner might come with Start/Stop as they are starting to push that in the Highlander and will probably be pushing that along all their engines down the road. Bleh...

I'm not happy with how they tuned/designed the Tacoma drivetrain, but we're stuck with it. If you want to talk about a mistake; Toyota trying to use an I4 again in the 6th gen would be just plain stupid. They tried that with the 5th gens and between crappy sales and almost immediate trade-ins, it was an embarrassment.

If you add the 4.5 1VD-FTV Twin Turbo they put in international Land Cruisers you'd have my vote.

It's a good engine, I had the opportunity to drive one after I replaced a water pump and turbo on an LC200 a few months back. The 3UR-FE beats it off the line and feels more "peppy" but it does have a hefty amount of pull once she's going. The difference is noticeable but unless you're planning on winning stop light races it's perfectly livable. A few of my coworkers have larger diesel trucks and they commented how it felt paltry and a bit weak compared to their vehicles. I did point out that most of their trucks have easily 2 liters of displacement over the 1VD-FTV and for a 4.5L relatively compact V8 it does well.

I wouldn't mine a 3UR-FE 6th gen with basically LC200 running gear, but I'd be more than happy with a 1UR-FE. In fact the lack of a 1UR-FE is what solidified my choice in my 4th gen when I heard about the 5th gens coming down the line.

who seriously voted for a v6 option??

give me the 5.7, i'll even settle for the smaller one. would kill to have another 100 hp in my 4runner :(

if toyota puts a v8 in the 6th gen (which they wont) i will either trade or keep mine and buy another.

Proper throttle mapping would have made this, and every other 5th gen "power issue" a non-starter. It's not a great tow vehicle and never will be. Any worse gas millage and sales would be in the tank (or resale value as prices go up). What I want is a transmission that is as reliable as the current one, with a few more gears. Power is not the issue - being in the RPM range to use it, and a throttle map that lets you, is. I could easily sell my SO on a V8 that we don't need simply because I want it. Most people can't, therefore it's a moot point. Heavy ass BOF SUV's do not sell because most people don't want or need them. Toyota knows this and that is why the next 4Runner is in danger. Give it a V12 or a turbo 4, we are still in a niche market, and will have to make do. A better question would be would you rather have a BOF turbo 4, or the V6 outta the Taco with a unibody. Either way, the 5th is not prefect, but we all better be prepared to keep them for a long time.
