8-10 Beeps when touching handle

I searched....I promise! I even looked in the manual. But I couldn't find an answer for this. I read about the partially open door, or the spare key inside, the open moonroof, etc ... but none of those apply in my case.

With the smart key in my pocket, when I grab either driver or passenger handles, instead of just the double beep-beep, I get like 8 or 10 back to back beeps that are really annoying. At first I thought it was a maintenance-reminder, but even shortly after service, it kept doing it. It does not happen every time, and as expected, I was not able to replicate it at the dealership. But they assured me that "they took a look at it".

Sure. I did read that one. That is purposefully holding down both buttons on the remote so that a lock / unlock customization is toggled. I even tried it and saw how it worked, but it still didn't work with the beeping. Randomly, when I hold the handle to unlock (not the remote), the 4R beeps 8 times instead of 2.

I would take a video of you unlocking your T4R until it happens again. Take that said video to the dealer at your next appointment and show them and see what they say then.

I wonder if there is a Bluetooth issue and your T4R thinks the key is out of range or almost out of range due to a bad signal. My wife's Nissan Rogue beeps rapidly when I forget something inside and the key is in my pocket.

For future reference and "searchers" I found that the multiple beeping when unlocking using the smart handle was to signal that one of the door lock actuators was failing. Sometimes it beeped, sometimes it didn't. I realize now that my passenger side actuator was in the process of dying and when it malfunctioned the multiple beeping happened. When it worked normally, normal beeping.

It eventually failed permanently and became stuck in the locked position. I had to manually reach over and unlock it for passengers. 100% of the time, when I unlocked using the smart handle, I would get 10 beeps (5 sets of double beeps). Very annoying, and I lived with this for about three months. People even gave me some dirty glances thinking I was somehow a showoff for having my car beep that much. The dealership replaced the actuator under warranty and beeping is back to normal.

When I unlock my Runner by pressing the unlock button on the smart key fob I get one series of double beeps, I press it twice to unlock all the doors and I get 2 series of double beeps. When I open the driver door by touching the handle with smart key on me I get the same regular double beeps. However when I touch the passenger handle to unlock the all the doors I get 4 series of double beeps (8 beeps total). I can hear the motors continuing actuate the unlock mechanism even though the doors are all unlocked. It does unlock the passenger door on the first double beep because I can open the door if I pull the handle quickly. This happens all the time not intermittently and it is very annoying and frustrating. I checked for faults with OB2 sensor and all is clear.

I was hoping only one key was doing it, thinking that maybe it could be re-learned. But if both keys are doing it, makes me believe that something is wrong on the car end.

How old is the truck ? Almost sounds like the passenger or anyone of the rear doors may have an intermittent door actuator.

I’m just guessing as I’ve seen the 1st gen rx300 do something like this.

It's a 2011 with just over 100K and I have had it for about a month and a half so it's been doing this since I purchased it. I did notice now that once or twice it does do the standard normal beep but 99% of the time it's the annoying 4 double beeps so I am scratching my head. I read back in the thread that it might be the actuators but the confusing thing is that is works fine when unlocking from the key, it's only when I touch the passenger side handle to open with key in my pocket.

"Key fob locator" error beeping

If I leave the key fob on the driver seat, everything is fine. Is there a problem with my 2 key fobs, something with the vehicle itself, or both?

Ok so this explains the guy camped near me this past week- had a new Tacoma- damn thing was beeping a LOT. Was really annoying in an otherwise peaceful setting.
I thought he was doing it to just be an A-hole...IMO a very stupid design. Why be so annoying?

I think I figured out the problem but not sure about a fix. I'm not mechanically or electrically inclined at all. Its the smart key antennas that have a ridiculously crappy range. I attached a picture of antenna locations and range.

If I get out with the key and move to a rear door or by the time I get to the trunk door, its not longer reading my key. Which causes all the beeping. If I leave the key on the driver's seat and do all that, no beeps.

Makes no sense since I can unlock it from far away. It reads the key then but walking around the runner it can't find it.

So my questions are: Would installing a remote start system do anything for this? Can two more antennas be installed in the back two door handles?

About a 1/4 of the way down, it says this......

"Key Cancel (See page )

The following key functions can be canceled:

Entry unlock/lock
Entry ignition
Entry back door open
Key lock-in prevention
Warning"

The Warning is what I'm targeting. About half way down this is the exact problem (below) and with the above, it can be cancelled. Not sure a dealer would do that though.

(f) Situation E: The electrical key transmitter sub-assembly is not in the interior or exterior detection areas.

(1) When the electrical key transmitter sub-assembly is not in the vehicle or the transmitter battery is depleted, the driver attempts to start the engine or turn the engine switch on (IG).

So about 4 years later, my truck is now having the same 8-10 beeping sounds when trying to open the door. I notice it’s the driver’s door which does not open. I need to enter the other side and reach over and open the door.

So what was the fix ? Was it an actuator replacement ?
