So, I was installing rock lights the other night and decided to wire some under the hood... So I get in the truck to go to work the next day and there is a very annoying rattle coming from the dash. I figured it was the wires flopping in the wind or something. It seemed to kick in around 30mph.
So I come home and make adjustments trying to make sure the wires cannot move.. Go for a few rides and the rattle continues. I start to look elsewhere thinking maybe it could be something in the suspension (maybe A CV axle....). The noise seems to come from the driver foot well area. I finally give up and go to bed.
I get my gopro this morning and go for a few drives... The noise seems to not be heard outside.. Finally I rip out all the lights under the hood since that was the only new variable. AND the Noise still present, maybe worse.
At this point I'm getting frustrated and start tearing apart the dash looking for something loose. I i put my phone up in the dash and the noise seems to be coming from there, but I can't find the source and it is impossible to get under there while going 30+mph down the road. I keep trying to brainstorm troubleshooting ideas...
I keep stopping myself, thinking this has to be something simple, Roof rack.... I inspect the entire vehicle from top to bottom and even fix a few minor squeaks...but the annoying rattle is still very present. I've burned about 1/4 tank at this point.
Finally, when I was just about to throw in the towel for the day (this was a solid 8hrs into it, I do another inspection out in the sunlight. And then I see it. One of those little plastic pins that holds the rubber mud curtain in place (near the driver UCA) had popped out and was allowing the curtain to hang loose. That stupid SOB was flopping in the wind and resonating through the frame as the pin hit it. It was most likely loose from when I changed the UCAs a few weeks back. :frusty: Even though I had re-installed it, it had made its way loose (since they are not that secure once pulled).
Oh well, time to go put the dash back together ;-)
Lesson learned, bend the little plastic hooks back out on re-install so they will stay in place and not cause a mystery noise....
