'83 chev 305 into my 87 runner?

i have an old 83 jimmy just sitting around being used for my snow plow truck, with the 305 in it. and i got an idea yesterday. i was talking with my girlfriends dad, and he told me that he used to have a 88 runner, that he crammed a 83 chev 305 into it, and it absolutly ripped shit up. the only thing is, i would fear that it would sit so far forward that it would be so close to the rad, when under some frame flex, it would puncture the rad. i could possibly run a small rad, or mount it on my brush guard and just weld a cage around it so that NOTHING would possibly hit it. any ideas? would i have to get a mounting kit? would the tranny be a bolt on, or would i have to go junkyard diving? or am i just crasy and this wouldnt work at all..?

No you are not crazy in can be done advance adapters makes the adapters and motor mounts to do the swap the ones i have done i put the chevy motor and trans and got the and got the adapters to run the yota t-case they work very nice as for the clearance problems u take the fan off the motor and do not use it mount a eletric fan on the outside of the rad inbetween the grill and rad make sure u get a fan that pushes air and not pulls or a nother swap would be a 4.3 chevy v6 would use the same adaptors being that a 4.3 is a 350 chevy with the front two cyliders taken off with the 4.3 u can fit a regular fan i hope this info helps and i will try to answer any other q's if i can

no i dont have photo's of the v8 swap but i can get u sum of the v6 swap witch would be the same exact thing minus 2 cylinders if that would help any other q's just ask i also beleave u can get the adapters from downoffroad.com

People stick 350's in Toyotas all the time, 305 shouldn't be a problem. But it will be a very tight fit.

Advance Adapters has everything you'll need, and that will be a lot, I hope you have a big budget ready.

What tranny do you plan on using?

thanks for the support. how much of a budget am i looking at? i was looking to use the stock tranny in my runner, if it would fit, as the tranny in my jimmy is an auto. worse comes to worst, i would just got to an auto wreckers and yank a manual tranny out of another 87 jimmy. what other modifications am i looking at? would the yota drivelinehook up to a matchable tranny? how much of a budget am i looking at?

all the swaps i have done i use the 700r4 it has a very low 1st gear and overdrive so u can run low gear ratios and large tires still have the power for the woods and what not and over drive for on the highway i will try to get them pics for u later today as far as motors go u can put any small block chevy from 283-400 small block as the blocks are all on the same design and the 700r4 will bolt to them all

i was talking to my math teacher, who is an avid 4wheeler, and he said that he dropped a supra in line 6 into his runner, it bolted straight on, no mods at all and it rippped shit up.

Word on the streets is that if you use a TH350 and an Advanced Adapters adapter to the stock tcase (assuming you have the gear driven case, not a chain drive) that you can keep your stock driveshafts and the tcase mounts in the stock location, and the speedometer still works. I think you probably have to use the motor mounts from Downey too, but they're relatively cheap.

The big expense comes from the radiator. You definitely don't want to go smaller as you won't be able to get out of the driveway without overheating. The best bet is an aluminum 4 core radiator. Downey also sells those but I think they're like $400. I've also seen some use a rad out of a mid 90's Camaro but I don't have the cross reference.

There's ample room for all of it but it is a lot of work and by the time you add up the nuts and bolts you'll have well over $2000 in the swap plus what you have in the motor.

Unless you can fab everything up yourself that is...

Personally if I was going to do it I'd use a 350 Chevy instead of the 305. They can be found for next to nothing, rebuilt for a few hundred bucks, and you can get custom parts for them anywhere at all. I have literally seen chrome dress up kits at Jiffy Stores around here for a 350...

When I was seriously contemplating this, I got the engine swap guide from Downey and scanned it in. It's a free guide so i don't think they have a problem with me linking it. This will give you ideas and a starting point, as well as give you an idea of what you're looking at.

That's with the Buick 3.8 conversion (which is what I have).
I don't think the V8 conversion will do that.

True. Using the stock or smaller rad will not work. You will definetly need a much bigger rad.

I wouldn't say ample, but a V8 will fit.

Stock Toy tranny won't hold up to a V8. But if you absolutely need to AA has adapters to do it.

TH350 or 700R4 with an adapter to the Toy t-case is bast choice.

As for other stuff, the front suspension will have to be beefed up big time, larger radiator, wiring issues, ...

i was told, that a yota supra 3MGE will bolt right in, and will need not a single thing moved. it sounds like too much work to cram a v8 in there, so i think im just gonna look for a supra engine, which will cost for the engine, but if everything bolts right up, it would save me in the long run wont it?

Go to Toyota nation and search the forum for our trucks over there. I forget the guys nic but there is a Supra god over there that has done the swap and helped others that are considering it too. He has posted links to a Supra forum with more info on the swap mas well.

He is the man to talk to on the Supra swap.

I can tell you that there is one engine that will bolt right up to the truck tranny like you want but I don't remember which one it was...

ok i am totally lost, looking in the wrong place, or blind. i cant find a single thing in toyota nation about a supra engine swap into my runner. can someone please help me out and provide either a link, a document, some photos or someone i can talk to to get some help in a supra engine swap? ovrrdrive,do you have a link to that guy you were referring to's profile or thread? i checked out that link you sent me, and cant find anything on a supra engine swap. thanks for your efforts
