86' 4runner gets VooDoo'd

hahaha, you would be correct sir! you drive from Winston to Asheboro every day?? dang, you must love your job!
It gives me time to get wound up in the mornings, and calm down before I get home. That, and audio books make the drive not so long.

I've actually tried to buy a couple different 80s over the past year after the owner's mentioned wanting to sell them. They both still have them, and never gave me a price. One was a supercharged 97 LX450.

I see them all the time here and will probably get one once my daughter gets my Runner next year when she turns 16. :cry2:

In the last few months, so many nice ones have come up including one with 4-cyl cummins swap and a turbo lx450. Alot of ones in between too.

Good luck on your decision. Its the removeable top that I'm not sure I'll be able to live without!

What percent did you tint the windows? What kind of fuel mileage did you get once the head was replaced? Awesome pictures, hope to make it out that way some day

The fronts are 35%, and the sliders are at 20%.

The best tank I got was 22.2mpg, but averaged 20mpg(with the rack and bags on the top), whereas the replaced head best was 18.7mpg(without rack, and all the all the bags up top).

where did you get those switches and roof rack

Here is where I purchased the switches:
OTRATTW

The roof rack, I built.

As an update on my 4runner.....It has just been sitting lately. Probably less than 1k miles so far this year. I really need to change that.

How the voodoo runner doing now? And how's the fj? Beautiful 1st gen, like others have said, dream vehicle. It's a toss up for my third vehicle between a 1st Gen 4runner and a k5 blazer.

Thanks.

The 4runner is doing good. I have swapped the tires again, this time for Cooper STT Pro's in 305/70r16. Looks like there will be big changes coming for the 4runner in the coming weeks. My parents have/had a 99 4runner they bought new. Last week, we had an ice storm that totaled it, and I'm purchasing it from insurance. If all goes well, soon my 22re 5spd will be a 5vz-fe powered auto, and get to keep my low range t-case.

The FJ Cruiser is good as well, it's been pulling more camping duty than the 4runner lately, but that will likely be changing.

dorton we never got those "big changes"! Are you going to the Appalachian Toyota Roundup this year? I would love to see your 4Runner in person! :hail:

I will be going to the ATR, but not in the 4Runner. Big changes did happen, but again, not the 4Runner. The change that occurred was from an FJ to a Tacoma. I'll be there in it. Because of prepping it to get ready for a trip we finished up earlier this month the 4Runner moved to the back burner. It will be getting some attention in the coming months as the weather starts cooling back down.

Look for me in the Inferno 2016 Rock Creek Overland Tacoma.

Love your truck! I'd buy one of those roof racks!! How did you mount? Is it drilled straight through the shell?

Thanks sir. It does mount through the topper. I used inner tube material as an additional gasket between the mounting surfaces.

How are you liking the scion seats for long distances? I'm looking into replacing my seats for something more bolstered but don't want something hard because I do plan on extended trips like you've done?

It's been a while.

The seats are very comfortable. I've done a couple 6k mile wheeling trips across the country with them, and have been very happy.

any updates or more mods

For the most part, just collecting dust. I have finally gotten motivated in the last week, and have started the 5VZFE / A340 trans swap. I'm hoping(hope being the keyword) to have it back on the road in a month if all goes well.

I started with a 99 4runner donor, on Saturday morning, and pulled the engine, transmission, engine harness, ecu, dash harness, and all underhood components.

I'm now working on cleaning up the engine bay on Smurf, and getting ready to paint it, and may even go through the trouble of hiding all the wires and fuse boxed out of sight.

I'll post some progress pics as it progresses.

After getting motivated again, the teardown on Smurf has begun:
